1  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / Solar Panels and inverters on: June 09, 2011, 11:40:15 AM
Hello
Seriosly thinking of solar panels on the roof.  About 12 of them covering half of my 3 bed semi.  This involves an inverter to change it to ac as you would expect.
My antenna mostly is a g5rv over the top of the hous being clear of it by about 8 feet at the apex.  Antenna wouldn't be directly over the panels and the invertor would be in the loft with my 2 ele 6 meter beam (sort of)

Anyway....

Will I be subject to noise?  My shack is at the end of the garden and it's nice down there but I wouldn'tr want to spoil things even for cheap electyricity.

Anyone have any idea if my radion life will be disturbed?

Any advice appreciated,
2  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Star-masterkey CMOS keyer Info needed please on: February 07, 2011, 07:18:47 AM
Hello

I have one of these bought recently from eBay.  I am slowly moving up the CW speed table and would really like to use this keyer proficiently with my Iambic key.

I could fiddle with it easily and that would be fun but I would really like the instructions for it if anyone could enlighten me.  I would be very gratefull and I have already read the short review on eHam.net.

Please note:
This is the memory keyer version with 8 memory banks of which 2 can be set for beacon / repeat CQ mode.

Thanks and enjoy the sun spots...

Tempus fugit.....
Due to the wonders of amateurs sharing info, I now have a scan of the manual and will be pleased to pass on to whoever so asks of me.

3  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / HB9CV v Comet CA 52-HB on: June 09, 2010, 11:13:35 AM

I am pondering what to put up in my loft by way of 50MhZ beams.
I reccon I could get a 3 Ele Yagi up there or maybe 4 if I moved a few things about but would life not be simpler if I used one of the below?  The xyl would certainly give me less hastle about it.

Thing is I don't know that much and the Antenna`s below look the same to me but seem to sport different gain f/b figures.
Is this just marketing and a 3 ele beam would stuff these two or are they serious fiigures?  Review for CA 52-HB sounds good but is it really an achievable figure in terms of gain?

6 METRE HB9CV 2 Element Yagi with gain of about 3.5db
6 METRE  Comet CA 52-HB 2 Element Yagi with (advertised) gain of 6.5 DB

Gentlemen
Hindsight is a wonderfull thing... I think I'll take advice here and go through the manual...manual?  Crikey I remember where it is now...still in the box...Factory settings it is then but thanks for the advice IE a little goes a long way with Heil.

The xyl knows what I sound like usually but she hasn't got a licence...I would suggest it but I like to eat as well and live a peacfull life.  Cheers Ron N7ZM... I was beginning to think I was persona-non-grata on the bands..but it all boils down to rtfm after all...
Cheers all... Sean M6GTX going on 2E0 by the way things are going.
5  eHam Forums / Elmers / TS-480sat Settings help! on: April 18, 2010, 05:51:21 AM
Hello

I can only use 10w due to my licence but have taken delivery of a Heil GM5 mic.  All seemed ok until I twiddled with the settings and now I have a phobia that I can't be heard...much, compounded by the fact that I don't seem to be getting hardly any contacts since... Tried calling...no good...tried blameing absorption from a CME but not happy with that...

Would people care to post there settings for the above rig and mic? so that I can at least set the thing up... Could post mine but their a little volatile right now... Can you sense my frustration?
6  eHam Forums / Contesting / Curious about contesting on: March 29, 2010, 11:46:57 AM
Hello
Is there any way I can call contesters without being part of the contest and without mucking up their logging?  I often wonder if I can contribute to them without getting signed up as a contester.
7  eHam Forums / CW / Katsumi MK-1024 Keyer Erasure on: March 15, 2010, 12:40:41 PM
Hello
Simple enough device and love using it.  But.... Does anyone know how to erase the memory keys?  I find that if I add to the memory it appends the memory.
My Star-Masterkey does the same thing.  Anyone know how to erase memory for this type of keyer?  I bet it's so easy I'll kick myself...

Hello
Just picked one up.  Just wondered if there are any issues keying a TS480SAT with this.
9  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Better than a Solarcon iMaxx 2000 ? on: March 07, 2010, 12:51:11 AM
In response to:
N3OX on March 2, 2010

I agree it is a hefty loading coil.  I think the coil must be solid silver.  I thought it looked quite well made but yes for the type of power it is somewhat over rated and over priced but then I did ask the question and KC8KTN on March 2, 2010 very kindly sent that info much to everyones astonishment.

As for the 11m jibe I really don't know why you have to be provocative like that although CB speak is often amusing to say the least... Oh those cheesy Americanisms Wink

I am restricted to one vertical at my site hence my post but see QRZ.com if you want to see the QTH and the shack.  I am inclined to go for a magnetic loop next but beams for me are out of the question.
10  eHam Forums / Elmers / Better than a Solarcon iMaxx 2000 ? on: March 02, 2010, 11:28:18 AM
So I like the antenna but what is there that is better in build quality and performance (to hell with the money).

Personally I am very pleased with mine but can I improve it?  I am also enchanted by the way it sways like barley in the wind.  I had bull finches landing on the tip last summer.  Painted it forest green did I.  Looks good, works really well.
11  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: imax 2000 on 15 meters on: February 28, 2010, 12:42:49 PM
I have this antenna and was wondering if I should isolate it from the 8 foot Aluminium mast.  Would that help performance as the mast is a variable that no-one seems to include in there calculations (flame proof suit = on ).
12  eHam Forums / Elmers / 10m 5/8ths vertical improvments on: February 28, 2010, 06:53:46 AM
Actually it's a Solarcon iMax 5/8ths.

I have it mounted about 13 foot AGL and antenna base is about 2 foot above my garden shed/shack on an ali` pole.

Thing is I hear-say that adding radials won't do alot and it isn't high enough anyway really but.... Could I jab a ground spike in the garden (which lies underneath) and connect the bottom of the mounting pole to that?

Would this have any beneficial effect. Works pretty well the way it is but I have to think of ways to improve which don't impact the neigbours who are watching.....and planning....

13  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: 6m masthead pre-amp on: February 22, 2010, 01:03:06 PM
Right !

That does it!  I accept wiser council here and will not use the pre-amp.  Most usefull advise and I thank you all for the input.  I think I would prob have better results if I just switched the antennas around so the 6m is at the top of the mast.  Cant't wait Wink
Thanks again chaps.

A little more info:

The masthead amp is a Spectrum Communications RP6SM.
The Coax run from the Ant (single element halo) to shack is 50 foot or 17 French metres.
Ant` is about 10 feet above the apex of the house beloiw an TV ant` and a commercial radio ant (88-108).
Could be better but I have reasons to do it this way...

Bought the pre-amp at a rally... Needs twiddling with IE coax connectors.

Also got a 10m preamp but that turned out to make things worse against the TS480SAT amp.

Anyone know of a quick way to tell if it works ok?  Rig it up to a 6m dipole I suppose.

With respect to Owen`s answer.  I am going to read up on the noise floor which makes alot of sense but the problem really is me insofar as I will clamber up the rigging and swing soldering irons about with the slighest excuse.... and then my sensible head takes over hence this post..
15  eHam Forums / Elmers / 6m masthead pre-amp on: February 21, 2010, 01:13:34 PM
Hello
A bit of a ballpark question this...
I have a TS480SAT Kenwood. Very good transceiver which has a pre-amp in it. I also have a masthead pre-amp for 6m which could be mounted above the apex of the house at my 6m halo (single ele)
This would be quite difficult and although compared to some peoples antenna mine may seem laughable it is all I can manage. The question really is will I get much better results using a 6m masthead pre-amp? Or will the TS48SAT pre-amp be as good as it gets (+ or -)
Hope this makes sense...
