1  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: $300 for a variance hearing in my back yard? on: May 24, 2011, 07:24:11 AM
I live outside of a city and last year received a notification from a neighbour that wanted a variance.  They wanted to add an access ramp to their home and they were moving a disable family member in to take care of them.  Why they needed a variance I do not know.  I had no objection to what they were doing.  Their notification included property info as well as a hearing date.

2  eHam Forums / CW / RE: training oscillator device? on: January 12, 2011, 06:07:24 PM
Is there not just a noise-making device I can use with a 'real' key to practice with? I've not found one on my own yet.

Go to radio shack.  Buy a  9V buzzer.  Buy a  9V battery.  Buy a 9V battery clip.  Attach the + to the buzzer.  Attach the - to the J-38.  Attach a wire from the J-38 to the buzzer.  Start practicing.

When I learned I put the 9V and buzzer in an Altoids tin and use a 3.5mm mono jack on the tin.  A bit elaborate but works.

Bill:
EBay - J-38 or J-37 - $20 to $40 - end of story.
Bill, W0WCA

Ditto here.  I have both.  I use both!

4  eHam Forums / Software Defined Radio / RE: SDR Cube Transceiver ? on: January 12, 2011, 01:42:47 PM
Why can't you have both.  You can use PowerSDR at home on Windoze and when you go out to the field you can leave that an home and use the LCD interface on the cube.

I use the Schumacher charger to charge my batteries then I maintain them with a float charger.
6  eHam Forums / Licensing / RE: Code/No Code CW-Do we need it? on: December 28, 2010, 07:43:26 PM
The whole "CW is dead" topic is basically used for trolling.

I can say this.  If CW had been a requirement when I got licensed in 2007 I would have not even bothered.  I saw CW as a major obstacle that I was unable to surmount.  I got licensed.  I upgraded and then upgraded again.  In 2008 i realized that to really get some enjoyment out of this hobby I needed CW skills.  Low power operation is something that I like and CW is the way to go.  In 2009 a local club offered a 6 week course.  More of a support session where we practice at home.  It was the catalyst I needed.  I'm now a 13-15 wpm op and am having a blast.

In the end CW was not required but there are many of us that choose to do it anyway.  Those are the people you want to have a QSO with.  The ones that enjoy it and do it because they wanted to.
7  eHam Forums / Licensing / RE: One licensee, two callsigns? Is this possible? on: December 28, 2010, 07:38:39 PM
Here is one that I've thought of.

My first call was KI4YMD.  As the previous station holder is it possible for me to transfer this call to our club so we can use it on a repeater?

8  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / RE: Does a quality HF RFI "sniffer" exist? on: December 27, 2010, 09:30:29 AM
I think one problem might be Christmas lights.  I get a lot of "bacon frying" this time of year but it seems to go away after people take down the decorations.
9  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / RE: Best Washing Machine (new front loader) for Ham Radio (RFI) on: December 27, 2010, 05:10:56 AM
Here's something to consider: There are a number of reasons you can find elsewhere that might make you wish you hadn't bought a front-loader later.  If you buy your washer at Lowes, you can buy an extended warranty for less than $100 that will replace your washer or refund your money should a problem develop that their service providers can't fix.  You can almost be sure that they'd never be able to fix an RFI problem, and you might be surprised at the number of other washing-related problems they can't fix these days.  We were able to get a 100% refund after 4 service calls on the same unfixable problem.  Even for fixable problems, you'd spend the cost of the warranty in one service call after the first year warranty runs out.

I will agree.  Do not buy unless you are willing to buy the warranty too.

We just purchased a set and after seeing what my parents and a friend went through we bought the warranty.  These washers are computer controlled.  Not like your cheap top loading models.  My parents washer failed one day and it took two weeks and at least 5 calls for the tech to come out.  I believe the warranty he bought stated that it took 5 calls before they would replace it.   They refunded his money 100% and he had to purchase a new one.  He paid about $800 for it.

11  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: What is noisier ethernet or wireless? on: December 23, 2010, 12:43:59 PM
I have a noise problem with my Ethernet.  Originally I thought that it was cheap switches so I consolidated them all into one Cisco 2900.  The long runs radiate noise mostly in multiple places of the 20M band.  I've put chokes on them but I need more.

In my experience, Ethernet can produce more interference.
12  eHam Forums / CW / RE: new guy on cw on: December 07, 2010, 03:34:16 PM
, when you get to open it for the first time, and when you make your first contact with it. It's like no other feeling in the world.

It reminded me of the first time I did something else...

I was nervous and shaking.  It was quick and only took minutes.  It was all over but the crying.
13  eHam Forums / CW / RE: Should band plans be revised? on: December 07, 2010, 03:31:17 PM

CW is without any doubt in my mind the greatest mode of communication there is on HF bands. Rather just having a nice qso in Morse Code or DXing . Weak signals , low power , simple transmitters , simple wire antennas , long distance , Top Band DXing ect .... CW will I think live as long as we are allowed to use the HF frequency spectrum .

I'll tell you what I did today.

I made a contact with AA1TJ in VT, me in GA.  This was with CW.   AA1TJ is an experimenter.  He gets joy out of using as little power as possible.  His rig of choice today was made on a bread board using a Raytheon sub-miniature tube.   Total power around 40mW with a perfect match.   For those that do not know, 40mW is about the amount of power you get when you rub a balloon on your head Smiley

I gave him a 339 and he was weak but if he had slowed down and increased the length of the elements we could have carried a conversation.  920 miles with only 40mW.  It is contacts like those that make every minute invested learning CW well worth it!

14  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Are you kidding me???? on: December 07, 2010, 11:23:53 AM
Wow,  We go from 2002 to 2010.  What gives?

IMO, I don't think any operation should listen across 20kc.  It just goes to show how poor of an operation is taking place.   If they can't make contacts over 5-10Kc then they suck.
15  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Help choosing a radio on: December 07, 2010, 07:11:18 AM
Any of those 4 will work fine for most people, most of the time (if the IC-718 has a CW filter).

This is exactly what I've been trying to say.  To make the 718 closer to what comes standard on the 450, the original poster will either need to buy it with the filters or add extra money.   I'm not quite sure why the TXCO option would be needed on the 718.  Does it drift?

You can use the notch filter on the 450 to make the cw filter even narrow.

I replaced a 706MKII with the 450 because all I had on the 706 was the DSP and it was crap.
