61  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: USB car chargers... on: December 15, 2010, 11:31:54 AM
The only devices that really care are Apple products. Apple has "extended" the USB connection to "protect" their stuff. (Read "force you to by replacement chargers from Apple") from what I understand they have a series of resistors on the data lines that feed voltage into the data line that the Ipod/Ipad measures to decide if it can charge and at what rate.

The protection has of course been reverse engineered. You can read more here http://www.ladyada.net/make/mintyboost/icharge.html

I use a 12v to USB 5V to feed my APRS GPS receiver, works like a charm.

62  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Need advice - can't break thread-lock loose from setscrews (K400 mount) on: September 23, 2010, 12:18:08 PM
I've drilled and re-tapped an antennex trunk mount and didn't have an issue. If it fits over the lip of a trunk he should have enough space to get the small tap through. If not, get a cheap tap at harbor freight and grind the point off and finish the process with the modified tap. Still less cost, damage, and hassle then trying to heat it.

I'd still drill and retap......

I think the problem with that is the threads in the mount are done before the lip id formed. Once the lip has been rolled over and I don't think the space on the other side of the threads is not deep enough to permit the tap to run all the way thru.

I'd still drill and retap. Maybe an hours worth of work (if you take a beverage break)  Wink The set screws are not tempered and are actually pretty soft metal (which is why they seem to strip so quickly even without locktite).

I would worry about changing the temper of the mount material by heating. Plus the heat is going to do a number on the powdercoat/ paint of the mount.

By the time you run around and get everything you need to heat it, do the job, and fix the damage, you could have ordered a new mount from Hong Kong, had it shipped by rowboat and installed on the other car.

I have a lot of experience in the automotive world with LockTite products.. Extreme heat.. or drilling are about your only two options for removing any thread locker (including rust)

I think it was mentioned earlier, but welding shops carry this stuff that absorbs heat for making welds on delicate items.. using that with a small torch might get you what you need.

If you know someone with a small oxy-acytlene torch, that would be the better way to go, the faster you can get those screws hot the less time there is for the heat to conduct outwards into things you don't want hot.

Drill them out carefully and re-tap the holes for a slightly larger set screw. You're gonna need to replace them anyway by the time you're done.

For field day, the OCRA group used a balloon hoisted antenna. I never did hear how that worked for them.. I'll have to ask if I hear the perpetrators on the repeater.

66  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Getting power in my car - '09 Ford Focus on: July 07, 2010, 10:28:35 AM
Additional batteries are not always the best way to go and if not done right can cause more problems then they are worth.

All cars have pass-throughs in the firewall for cables, wires, and linkages.. look for an unused one, cut a small slit in the rubber cover and you're in business. you can use a wire coat hanger to help feed the wires through (before hooking them to the battery of course)

I'm not familiar with the focus, but if it is an automatic transmission, look in the pedal area for the firewall access that would be used for the clutch linkage. Otherwise just look for the rubber plugs or ask your friendly mechanic. You want to avoid the master wiring bundle pass-through and car computer area if possible to avoid interference with the radio, or the car computer.

good luuck

67  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Anyone ever try a MFJ-2310T mini-ham stick? on: June 29, 2010, 04:02:29 PM
Thanks for the info! If I decide to try this the max I'll be putting into it would be 50 watts. It might be a fun experiment for the money.

I have used the MFJ-2320T 20 meter version of this antenna. It worked well enough until the loading coil burned up running 400 watts. Running just 5 watts on CW it made many contacts during days of good propagation. With just a single magnet mag mount it stayed on the car until 80 mph was reached, at which time it fell over.

I think the 10 meter version will work well.
68  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Anyone ever try a MFJ-2310T mini-ham stick? on: June 29, 2010, 03:47:45 PM
Yeah, I know. Life sometimes calls for compromise. The plan is not to mount my 10m antenna w a mag mount, but with a hood seam mount in the trunk. You may remember that you told me not to use that type of mount, but then recommended it to someone else in a different post a while back.

I'm looking at several antennas right now and am leaning towards a larsen nmo27. I asked about this one because googleing was not turning up much and I was curious.

The question was has anyone actually used one. I'm guessing your answer to that is no.

Any mobile antenna, less than a quarter wave in length, will have additional loss. How much loss depends on the Q of the coil, the overall length, and on the mounting methodology; in that order. In this case, the coil Q is very low, the length is compromised, and so is the mounting; a mag mount in this case.

The question remains, will you be able to make some contacts? The answer is yes, but the rest of the folks running full-length 1/4 waves, will work stations you won't be able to, unless the band is in very good condition. At present, 10 meters is very sporadic. You need the best you can do, and that certainly isn't a mini-hamstick, stuck on with a mag mount.

There is a lot more about this subject, on my web site.

70  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: FT-8800 Preferential Memory Scan on: June 29, 2010, 09:07:16 AM
The 8900 memory management could have been much better IMHO. As it stands its not very intuitive. The radio basically has one big pool of memories and limits the way you can separate them out unlike the 7900 and the 8800.

Do you use the hyper memories for the "new memory bank"? I have not had time to wrap my brain around Hyper-memories yet. I probably should one of these days now that I have the programming cable and could undo the damage I can cause! ;-)

I loaded all the frequencies I could find for North Carolina in the radio. I have the freqs I want to scan daily marked, and scan them (MSN on) in the left VFO (6m and 10m are only available on that side) I have the right VFO set to a repeater I usually monitor. Scan on that side is set to "off"  so if I'm out of my QTH area I can scan the rest of the frequencies (basically every memory excluding 6m and 10m and the local air traffic control) I have loaded simply by scanning the right side VFO.

Dave, you are correct if Menu #35 is left in the default "MEM" positon.  If you toggle Menu #35 to "MSN" the radio will ONLY scan the flagged channels, even if you start your scan on an unflagged channel.  Essentially, Menu #35 toggles Preferential Scan "on" (MSN) or "off" (MEM) and the channel on which you start your scan is irrelevant.

Had the feature worked as described, it would have been kind of handy as you could elect to scan a full or partial memory bank simply be choosing the channel on which you started the scan.  No need to go in and toggle a memory. But, unfortuantely that is not the way it seems to work.

A it stands, I have found it easier to copy my potentially flagged channels into a new memory bank, which is easy enough to do, and swtiching memory banks is faster and does not require selecting a numbered menu.
71  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: FT-8800 Preferential Memory Scan on: June 28, 2010, 12:35:54 PM
FYI this is also the case with the FT8900R. The start scanning on a memory marked with the triangle and it'll scan only pref memories notation is incorrect.

72  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: mag mount antennas not on a vehicle on: June 14, 2010, 12:03:00 PM
Pop the mag mount on a big steel cookie sheet. That will give some ground plane. (might want to by the XYL new ones and take the old ones off her hands)

Hello Elmers,

I am looking to setup a better, but basic portable, antenna system I can use on my deck.  Is it possible to take a mag mount antenna and place it on a wooden deck or table and have good results?  Or does a mag mount need the metal vehicle to operate properly?

73  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Moving memories on the FT-8800 on: June 05, 2010, 01:37:27 PM
I would suggest you get a programming cable, and software. Dump the memories from the radio into the laptop, reorder then reupload to the radio. You might find someone near you with the cable, if not the cable is under $20 on ebay and get the software, $15 http://www.g4hfq.co.uk/ftb8800.htm

You can do a lot with the software that takes forever manually.

74  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: '10 Ford Flex Igintion noise on: May 31, 2010, 07:46:14 AM
His company leased the vehicle from a company that does fleet leases. Totally different deal than a personal lease agreement. Leasing makes sense for super mega corps, does not make sense for small business or personal situations.

Who is the leasing company?

I don't lease vehicles, period! I didn't even when I had my own business, and could write it off. The main reason was that the break even point was always too low with respect to mileage. In my case, the average yearly mileage was well over 50 k, and my CPA sure proved to me who was making money on the deal. In case you missed the point, it was the leasing company.

By the way, I have a copy of Honda's lease documents, and there are no such provisions.
75  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: High SWR when antenna mount is grounded on: May 26, 2010, 06:21:23 PM

Well, I ended up replacing the nmo mount and the coax/connectors. It helped quite a bit, but swr was still too high. I hate to admit it, but I milled some derlin insulators and went to the hot tub. ;-) insulated, the swr is 1:1.2- 1:1.9. Performance is good so I called it a day.

I did consider the hood, I didn't have a wide enough seam for the mount (damn German over-engineering). As it was I ended up loosening the trunk bolts and adjusting the lid slightly to make that work.

I'm sure this will bite me at phase 2 when I add the 10m antenna and duplexer to the mix, but I'll deal with that when that happens.

Thanks all for the suggestions!

Dave

What was the final outcome/ solution?  And why didn't you consider the Hood?  Opposite the Stereo antenna.
