4th Annual - 4x4 Ham Special Event from Titan Missile Museum in Green Valley, Arizona

October 20, 2012 9am-5pm MST

Look for us calling CQ around 14.244Mhz and 7.244Mhz although we may move around due to band conditions.  We've had good success on 10m/15m in previous years as well.

Operating from the 80 foot tall discone antenna 15 miles south of Tucson, Arizona.

The Titan Missile Museum is the only publicly accessible Titan II missile site in the nation. There are tours of the underground missile site where visitors can see the 3-ton blast doors, the 8-foot thick silo walls, and an actual Titan II missile in the launch duct. During the tour of the launch control center, they also experience a simulated launch and more!

Discone antennas are a no gain broadband band antenna. The SWR (standing wave ratio) is typically 2:1 over the full range of 6 MHz to 30 MHz. It was built by Collins Radio Company and operational from July 1963 until the site was deactivated in 1982.

There has been some confusion on how I posted the time as AZ doesn't observe DST.  We get enough sun as is and don't need to save any.

The net starts at 3:00am Zulu time Sunday.  20:00 AZ MST (-7 GMT) Saturday evening.

Please join us for the 4x4 Ham - CW Slow Speed Net net this Saturday night.

When: Last Saturday of every month at 8:00pm (MST -7 GMT).

Radio Frequency: 40m - 7.115. If traffic, up 2kHz until clear and establish net there.

Details: The purpose of this net is to allow new CW operators the opportunity to practice their CW skills in a friendly, fun environment while teaching ops how to participate in a directed CW net. It will also give DX stations a chance to participate in a 4x4 Ham net. Code on the net will be sent between 5-12 WPM, with slightly exaggerated spacing between letters and words.

Hello,
Please check out the 4x4 Ham group (http://www.4x4ham.com) which originated in the Phoenix area over 2 years ago.  We are planning an Oct. 23 trip to the Titan Missile Museum, so feel free to join us.

You make some great points in your post and ham radio is an invaluable tool in the 4x4 on the trails.  Once you leave pavement in AZ, cell phones stop working and many times the standard CB or FRS radio does not even provide the coverage needed.
