46  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: T33 - BANABA on: March 27, 2013, 07:36:30 AM
Even as a Left Coaster, that's still one of those few remaining ones I need in the Pacific for a ATNO. That was one of those islands that didn't exist when I was inactive from DX'ing and then when I came back a few years ago, "Banaba Island, what the heck is that??" Smiley

47  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Lets Play "Guess that DX-pedition" . . . on: March 20, 2013, 08:40:52 AM
What if a USFWS employee was doing the DXPedition and inviting a few friends along?

You never know!! I mean if a guy would go to the extreme of joining the Coast Guard just to put Kure Island on the air, you can imagine what a dedicated ham might do to bring Navassa to the masses Smiley

48  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: TX5K seems to be EU only for 40M and 80M CW on: March 12, 2013, 12:17:03 PM
There is no doubt that the TX5K team did a great job and I was happy getting them on almost all the bands except 30M and 160 (no antenna). I was also one of those who donated to the DX'pedition before their operation. Although I realize the team was trying to work EU because it was needed most in that area, there was a definite EU slant in this operation than what I've experienced before. For that reason, I'll probably hold off sending a donation for their Heard operation until AFTER the DX'pedition is over. If after that operation I feel they made a good effort in working NA, then I'll donate appropriately.

49  eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / RE: Remote operation option? on: March 08, 2013, 11:35:28 AM
I'd wondered, idly, if one could make a business offering remote operations for people who wanted a dream rig but lived under the domination of a HOA.

My best ideas are always taken, it seems.

- WX2S

I think I've already seen at least one business setup for remote operation but I'm not sure how well it's doing yet. Although this seems like a great idea, I have to wonder how ethical it would be in counting for DXCC or other awards. For example, lets say the remote station was in Florida and you lived in the Northern latitudes of Washington State like I do. From Florida you can work Africa, Europe, and the Middle East almost like they were next door all day long. Not so for us, especially over the pole. Should a contact made say with a YI (Iraq) station count for DXCC if the remote operation was about 2700 miles closer to the DX? My feeling is no, it shouldn't count.

However, if a group of hams or a person wanted to set something up locally and they were personally involved in the setup and operation of the remote station, I think I would be a bit more comfortable with that scenario. As you mentioned, it's getting more and more difficult to get away from HOA restrictions, especially for those who have limited choices on where they can live.

50  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Your favorite DXing technique/tip? on: March 05, 2013, 12:20:36 PM

And guess what, my favorite tip is NOT to tune up on the DX when he is working split!

Oh man, I feel terrible.. I did this by accident on top of the clipperton dxpedition last night along with transmitting my call! As a first time father with a less than three week old newborn I am finding out that sleep deprivation and radio don't mix too well. I received several emails.. Some friendly and some not so friendly late last night. My apologies to all! I definitely do know better not to ever do that.

Not to worry Jim, mistakes happen, and we have all made them. The fact that you were man enough to come up here and admit your mistake shows what kind of character you really have.

51  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: TX5K QRV on: March 05, 2013, 10:48:43 AM
Why is the spot coming up as Afghanistan?

In HRD, I see that they have that prefix marked as secondary for Afghanistan. Not sure why.

Probably because HRD needs to change the filter to properly handle some of the French (T) prefixes that seem to be predominant now. And I'm not sure if the French government has ever had a standardized set of prefixes for their off-shore possessions. For example, can anyone tell me for sure that TX will always be Clipperton, or TO4 will always be Mayotte, etc.?

I respect their choice and have not attempted making a contact with them on those bands.  Personally though, I find it a little much that all I have heard is hour-after-hour of EU only on the CW bands I have been listening to; especially 10, 12, 15, & 17 meters.  It just might be the times I have had the rig on, but it does seem to be quite slanted.

I've noticed this myself. I'm sure they are probably trying to concentrate on EU because it most likely has the highest demand for Clipperton, but hopefully they will start turning the beam up our way a bit later. I have managed to snag them on 12, 17, and 80 when they were working the US, and there is still plenty of time to get them on the other bands.

53  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: The TX5K Team Has Arrived at Clipperton! on: March 01, 2013, 05:00:57 PM
they haven't started yet.

OK, I guess that explains it was just ghost spotting. However, they have been on the Island since yesterday and haven't started operations yet? Did the forget to feed the squirrels for the generator or what? Smiley

It sure doesn't seem like they are very active or have the best antenna setup yet, that's for sure. I don't see them spotted at all right now, and when they were on earlier today I didn't hear a peep on any band. I realize that band conditions are not the best, but Clipperton should be a easy one from my location.

55  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: YI1RZ was #300 on: February 28, 2013, 10:37:11 AM
Thanks Luke! I have no reason to loose interest yet, that's for sure! I still have a few that I need to snag that are active once in awhile but I just haven't been at the right place at the right time. Partly because I'm still a working stiff and my wife demands a certain amount of time Smiley I would also like to finish up 100 on 80M for a 9BDXCC so this summer I will be working on improving antennas for 80M next winter. I would also like to try something for 160M but adequate real estate is my biggest issue. So I still have lots of things to keep me busy for my DX pursuits.

It looks like you are doing very well at 307. Are you going for the normal WAS or the Triple Play? That would be a good challenge from down under Smiley And I agree, QRP DXCC would be fun. I've been looking at purchasing a nice little QRP rig but haven't decided on a particular one to buy yet.

Congratulations on #300! Razi would tell you "mabrouk".
I worked the Intrepid expedition to Iraq a few years ago, but it was ages until I finally worked Razi. Now I've worked him a couple of times, and once this year already.
#300 is a really nice total. I managed to make it late last year.
Now on #307, there is virtually nothing left to work, that is active. I may have to finish my WAS or something. Just about worked everything on so far this year for the CQ DX Marathon...
Don't lose interest now, you've worked everything that's been on recently! I'm enjoying a ragchew now, and pursuing 160m DXCC, and QRP DXCC.
Keep on having fun!

56  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: XT2TT start today on: February 28, 2013, 09:50:15 AM
A vertical on my garage, which I have made over 180 countries in 1 year.

In which case you probably already know it, but: 30, 40, and 80 will be very very reliable to Africa in the early evening. And just before our sunset, 30M will be especially good. Obviously I can't guarantee XT2TT's schedule but they've been very active on these bands on CW at these times, clearly the prime hours for north america.

Actually I think my 30M QSO with XT2TT was one of the best so far. He certainly had a great signal here on the West Coast the day I worked him.

57  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: YI1RZ was #300 on: February 26, 2013, 03:44:28 PM
Thanks guys for the encouragement and congrats. And I know what you mean about how difficult it is to work Iraq. I've seen Razi spotted several times but usually when I would tune in I would hear nothing except noise. But he was just strong enough this time on 20 meters to make the QSO. Now the next two I would like to work from the middle east would be Iran and Libya. Iran I see on once in awhile, but I don't think I've ever noticed a 5A on the cluster in the last couple of years.

58  eHam Forums / DXing / YI1RZ was #300 on: February 26, 2013, 08:25:43 AM
I finally got my confirmation for #300 by working Razi, YI1RZ in Baghdad the other day on 20 meters. Considering I've only been back in the hobby a couple of years, and when I started I was at 125, I think I've done pretty well so far Smiley I know it's going to be a long road to get to the Honor Roll, but Lord willing, I may get there. If not, I'll still have fun trying!

59  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: LOTW certificate revoked????????????? on: February 25, 2013, 09:33:47 PM
LoTW is not a 123 setup.  I wrote software for 10 years and eventually even I had to call the help desk to get mine going.   LoTW is not a very intuitive setup and the documentation is a bit confusing.  Sometimes things work as planned as it did on my second PC but most of the time you get waist deep into problems getting it up and running.

I know what you are saying. I consider myself fairly computer savvy but I still had issues getting LOTW setup when I first started using it. I haven't had any problems since then, moving the certificate around to 2 different computers in the last couple of months. I would imagine that LOTW can be very intimidating to many users.

60  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: DX cop bad behavior on: February 21, 2013, 10:13:30 AM
I think what he means Chris is sometimes you might hear someone calling the DX'pedition on frequency instead of split, doesn't move up after being being told several times by the cop to move, so finally someone calls him pretending to be the DX, "W7XXX ur 599 bk". W7XXX thinks he has the QSO and then happily moves off thinking he is in the log. The tactic usually doesn't work, but you hear it all the time Smiley
