76  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Nice Opening On 10 Today on: January 04, 2013, 08:40:49 PM
Very nice! I actually made my first HF contact today on 10m in the tech portion of the band (I am only a tech after all!)! Reached Montana on 100 watts! little hard to copy at times, but I'm sure with time my operation skills will increase.  I also then discovered after the QSO, that my filters were a little wacked out!

I'm only on an end-fed LnR 10m dipole about 20ft off the ground, strung across the inside beam that runs across my porch!

That's great Jared!  Grin Hope you can make many more 10 meter QSO's. In October/November of 2011 we had a really nice opening on 10 meters where it was really hopping. Something similar happened this past fall, but not quite as good as the year before. I'm going to keep a watch on it for awhile to see what happens.

Who said 10 meters was dead? Smiley We had a nice opening on 10 meters this morning from the West Coast to the Indian Ocean and Middle East, all via the Long Path. Worked VU2XO, A45XR, A65BP, and A92GR. I heard quite a few VE/W 6's and 7's working them as well so I'm not the only one who took advantage of the opening Smiley

78  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: The higher we go, the more difficult it becomes...guaranteed on: January 04, 2013, 09:03:47 AM
I don't do much JT65-HF anymore as it became too boring, especially after I got my beam up Smiley However, it did provide me with some nice DX when all I had was my vertical, such as Reunion (FR5ZU) on 40 meters. Also a few contacts with Europe on 80. It's amazing what JT65 can decode with no discernible signal that the human ear could not pick up in the noise.

Good news:

Dec 31, 2012: LoTW Update --
The new LoTW hardware has been delivered and is in the process of being configured and tested. We hope to have it up and running within a few weeks. In the meantime, please do not upload your log more than once. This only causes more processing delays.

The LoTW Team

Normally I would optimistic and reply with something like "That's great!!", however in this case, all I can say is "It's about time!!!". This should have been done months ago as there have been signs that LOTW was having issues for quite sometime. Hopefully they will be able to get it installed before the queue becomes more of a monster than it already is now Smiley

80  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Voting for the best DXPedition of 2012 on: December 24, 2012, 09:02:41 PM
I tried it several times myself and couldn't get the Captcha to work. So I'll wait until they get it fixed otherwise I won't bother to vote. My choice will be 7O6T as 1, HK0NA in second, and then PT0S. Actually they all deserve an award for the fantastic job they did for the DX'ing community.

I received my 3B9SP card in the mail yesterday. Thanks to the group for the quick QSL request and great operation!

Wow, it's a real shame that it has come down to this from such a top notch operation. You would hope that a gentlemen's agreement would be all you need but it seems that now it will come down to written contracts between the team leaders, supporting organization(s), and the team members. And eventually this might curtail future DX'peditions because of the legal requirements. Come on guys, work it out. Tis the season you know Smiley

I'm not 100% sure how DX'peditions work, but it seems to me that whatever money comes in first should pay for expenses, and then what's left over would be distributed among the members who paid out of their own pocket unless there was some prior agreement that stated otherwise. Also, there would be a full and open accounting of the ledger between the members of the team. Hopefully this is just a misunderstanding and can be resolved soon.

84  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: TX5K - Clipperton - Winner of the Colvin Award! on: December 14, 2012, 10:06:21 PM
Although I don't need Clipperton for a ATNO, I do need them on several bands for band fills so I'm looking forward to the DX'pedition myself. I'm sure they will be new ones for quite a few stations and I hope they have a very successful expedition!

85  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Any Station Changes Planned for 2013? on: December 12, 2012, 11:16:32 AM
I need to do some work for a decent 80M antenna so I can finish up DXCC on that band for my 5BDXCC. Eventually I would like to do something for 160M but right now I just don't have the real estate to do much on that band. And then I would like to convince the wife that I really need a FTDX-5000MP. The latter will probably be the most difficult project to achieve  Grin

You would think they would use the OQRS feature of Clublog, but it doesn't look like it's been activated yet. I guess the thing to do is wait a few more days and see what happens. It looks like the Paypal thing on their QSL page was just to make a donation.

87  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: What's the deal with Club Log and oqrs? on: December 07, 2012, 05:06:16 PM
Trying to use the oqrs on Club Log gives  a response that the oqrs is disable for this Call
sign.  I can't see any way to enable it.  After trying several times I began to wonder if it
is turned off for everybody and perhaps will be enabled after ZL9HR is QRT.
Does anyone know for sure?

Allen KA5N

Be patient Allen. The OQRS activation is usually done by the QSL manager at the end of the expedition, and often times they wait until they know for sure all logs have been uploaded and it's ready for activation.

I am back in the ham game after 48 years QRT and really grateful to teams like ZL9HR! No honor roll in sight, but I am well over 200 confirmed entities in 5 years of bad sun.

Ken Lawson, W7NUW

Welcome back to the hobby Ken! I just became active about 3 years ago after a 28 year hiatus. I'm up to 295 confirmed and hope to break 300 soon. And I know what you mean about bad sun. We get a bit more of it here in Spokane this time of year, but not much Smiley And I agree, it's great that we have such dedicated DX'ers that can activate some of the rare ones for us.

89  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: But....... I dont WANT to wait another YEAR for an ATNO!! on: December 05, 2012, 04:06:58 PM
How about writing a letter to you Senator urging them to pressure the US F&W to allow DXpeditions to KP1, Kh5K, KH1 etc?

Stop complaining and do something!

What I'm hoping for is a good report from the NZ Department of Conservation (DoC) on the ZL9HR operation. I'm sure that would go a long way in the argument that hams can be conscience of the environment with their operations to help secure permission from the US F&W service. It seems the DoC is happy on how things are going giving permission for them to stay overnight.

Whatever happened to the XZ (Myanmar) proposed operation ?

73, Rick - N8XI

I think Simon keeps plugging away at it. With the President's visit to Myanmar and thawing relations with that regime, you just never know Smiley
