1  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: quick question, need help on: November 04, 2012, 11:16:44 AM
well after i wrote this i tried cutting the end off my 3 foot jumpper, and tied directly to the shield and center, and after cutting some off, i am almost 1.5-1 at 28.400.... so something is wrong with that balun i guess, yes it is a 4:1 balun.  although i have only heard one contact, and after listening to him, ten meters is open pretty good right now, plus the logs online, but i still hear nothing throughout the band. but anyways im gonna leave it up and see if maybe its just not open in my area. cant hurt anything.
2  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / quick question, need help on: November 04, 2012, 08:11:32 AM
if i am in a hotel room 6th floor, and i make a 10 meter delta loop cut to size, and im using a balun, but i get swr like full scale, could it be because i am using only a 3 foot piece of rg8 coax from radio to balun? i didnt have any longer piece when i took this trip so i figured this would work. why can i not tune any size antenna whether its 20 meters or 10 i cannot get one to come anywhere near 3.1 swr with my internal antenna tuner on my ft450. im guessing its because of the construction of this building but i mean its suspended with some insulating wire from ceiling and walls, but really, i could always make any kind of wire and recieve a bunch of strong signals on 40 and 20 even tho i cannot talk to them.. can me balun really be bad? i mean i used it a couple months ago at home. could i narrow it down by cutting the pl259 off the end and attaching the delta loop to the sheild and center conductor? but then would it not be right for a delta loop because my delta loop attaches to both posts on the balun like a closed loop, without the balun would it be like a short? i have only today off so im just wondering if i can get this working today while im on this trip the next 2 weeks, thanks and this page will remain on my screen so i can read the responses. thanks a million.
3  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / NEED HELP! Windows CE .net 4.1 on: March 31, 2012, 03:44:25 PM
OK. so being as good as i am with PC, i have no idea what the hell is going on with this Advantech MPC-100E Windows CE .net 4.1 tablet. I cant seem to find out where the "devices" are, what drivers they need, or how to get this PCMCIA wifi card to install.. i plugged it in and the green light comes on, but it doesnt pop up asking for drivers or anything, and i cant seem to figure out a place on here like desktop windows, where i could see the unidentified driver and opt to install the driver for it. Like Device manager in desktop windows. Nor can i figure out how to get any software installed for it. For example, i am using a USB flash disk back and forth from my PC to this thing, and ive tried installing software for WinCE, didnt work, i tried Windows Mobile software, it said it instaled with errors, i tried WM/Pocket Pc programs, said installed, but when you go to run it, it says it cannot find the specified file, or it is not a valid Win CE application. I have a ARM/Xscale type with WinCE, how do i know what devices or drivers i need in this thing. Thanks for any help you can give me. Once i can figure it out, im good from then on, but i have to first KNOW what type of software to attempt to download and install.. i figured Windows CE was sort of universal, much like all programs you download for XP, also work for 2000, 98 95 etc... please help. Purpose of this adventure is for APRS mobile.

oh ok, well its something im not gonna mess with. it is a 7/8 wave tho, SG7900NMO , but its not worth my time to assess with a thermal camera. 73
5  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / thermal camera for radiating antenna? on: March 30, 2012, 11:37:58 AM
if i had a thermal camera, could i use it to see anything useful when transmitting out of my mobile setup to see loss or leaks? 160 watts to a 7/8 wave antenna.. we were talking on another forum to see about losses or radiated power and someone mentioned borrow a thermal IR camera..... what would i see if anything
6  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: mobile antenna power rating on: March 27, 2012, 11:03:08 AM
wow, a lot of info. i can say that when i transmit for a long distance driving, and park and feel my antenna, it is not hot at all, that is 160 watts into a 7/8 wave antenna and the antenna is stamped boldly, 200 watts handling" but the website now claims 150 watts, "the sum of both bands being operated simutaniously" so i guess this antenna is rated for 100 on vhf and 50 on UHF... oh well
7  eHam Forums / APRS / RE: APRS Software on a Windows Mobile 5.0 device on: March 27, 2012, 10:55:24 AM

8  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / 220mhz band? on: March 22, 2012, 05:17:53 PM
i have never had a 220 radio.. aside from HF, im mostly 2 meters, and a day or so a month on 70cm.. what  is going on with 220.. i understand the way the signal travels, so i would guess its not as good as 2m simplex, but probably better than 70cm? line of sight.... is there REALLY anyone who talks on this band simplex or packet? just looking for any info....
9  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / mobile antenna power rating on: March 22, 2012, 12:32:29 PM
JUST A QUESTION...............if a mobile antenna says handles 100 watts, could i rewind the small winding coil in the center of the whip to increase the power rating, of course using a larger gauge wire in the coil?
10  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / Windows CE NET tablet apps on: March 21, 2012, 05:22:58 PM
What is the best software for windows ce net, for APRS, satellite tracking and whatever else maybe some doppler radar and weather conditions. im not used to anything with windows ce, i have never had it. any other versions of windows, from 3.1 to vista, im good. still havent migrated to windows 7 yet. lol , would any windows ce program run on a touchscreen tablet 10 inch, like a field tablet back before they had ipads..or is it model specific. thanks for any information you can throw my way.
11  eHam Forums / APRS / RE: Garmin Nuvi 350 - TM-D700A Cable on: March 15, 2012, 05:50:18 PM
to all who read this, google argent cables tm-d700, there is a cable for many radios out there, where a USB interfaced Garmin GPS will talk to a Kenwood/Yaesu etc like a AVMAP would.. bidirectional traffic to both units and its about 50 dollars..
12  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Question on: March 09, 2012, 05:42:13 AM
i have a d700 with 1 output. is there a duplexer that will connect to my 1 output and split to 2 outputs, where i can have a 2 meter monoband and a 440 monoband with seperate coax runs? i know my old duplexer combind my two outputs to one dual band antena, am i missing the fact that they are everywhere, or does what i seek not exist. reason for this, i want to buy a diamond 2 meter  monoband 8 footer NR22lh, and some sort of really high gain 70cm antenna, instead of my dualband  i have now.
13  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / high power Mobile antenna and fundamentals on: March 06, 2012, 09:23:46 AM
Ok, i love this eham forums,
i have a MFJ1432 , which is identical to the Diamond SG7900NMO , now the antenna is stamped "200 watts max" but the website says 150 .. diamond wensite also states 150 watts, HOWEVER, it also says "150 watts sum of both bands simutaniously" , do you mean to tell me i have been using a 75 watt antenna with a 160 watt mirage amplifier? I just emailed Diamond to see what they say, but what are the negative effects of overloading an antenna, EXCEPT damage to the system (amplifier), would i have reduced TX range, etc... i really do well with this setup, significant notice with amp on and off, but i want a better antenna, and i dont mind length, thisone is 62 inches, 7/8 wave.. i have seen an antenna that is 96 inches, monoband 2 meter, lots of gain... how do i know if a 1/4 wave antenna that is rated at 200 watts will outperform this antenna because im overloading it.. i am using LMR400 hard mounted to roof on NMO mount.
14  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: VHF 2 meter amplifier on: March 06, 2012, 08:47:17 AM
well with this pallet, and FET, how complicated is a TX RX circuit.. the connectors, switches and heatsink are easy enough for me, but being that this is also a 52vdc board, i couldnt use this mobile, could i?
15  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: mirage amp on: March 06, 2012, 06:23:41 AM
can you tell me which and where to get a external preamp for receive? are they worth it? where does it go? thanks
