Can somebody tell me what this is, meaning, is this the amp, minus the enclosure and other switches? or is this only the board with the mosfet and a whole lot of other stuff has to go on it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/140-150MHZ-RF-POWER-AMPLIFIER-PALLET-VHF-300WATTS-with-BLF278-or-MRF151G-/320696233516?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aaafc2e2cIm really wanting a 300 watt amp, and am pretty good at building electronics, and always wanted to build one like this. however, my 160 watt amp draws 22+- amps of current, this board here states current draw is only 12 amps.. for 300watts, that doesnt sound right at all.. it also says 52vdc , maybe theres another circuit needed to convert 12vdc to the 52vdc needed? any info would be appreciated, i would hate to buy something like this for this much money and not know what the heck to do with it. 73

eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / 2 antennas on one radio mobile

i got a question for the smart ones out here, i have a kenwood d700 and a mirage 2 meter 160watt amp, lmr 400 and nmo hard mounted on roof to a mfj1432 antenna, 7/8wave on 2 meters, 3 over 5/8 wave on 440, highest gain i could find.
what im wondering is, how would i put two antennas on my one radio, maybe without a switch? i know a duplexer lets two outputs to one dual band antenna without switching, but im thinking someone told me that a 1/2 wave inner city will outperform a 7/8 wave in the city, and i just thought maybe a couple different antennas would give me the ability to talk maybe to very distant stations and locals as well. im always looking for more gain and distance, im a sucker for 1.0db even tho it doesnt make a difference, supposedly i have the highest gain antenna right now, and i do like the 2 meter monoband 8 footer, with 7.2db gain or whatever, it would be cool to switch to the 2 meter monobander when that repeater is starting to fade out, however i think i just answered my own wuestion, maybe i do need a switch....does anyone know the pinout of the plug on the back of the mirage amp so i could make an interface myself? should be real basic .... any other help would be great, regarding antennas for different applications. i been doing this for a while now, trying to make the best out of my setup, but there is way more people that know more than i do. thanks

eHam Forums / Digital / VHF digital packet TM-D700 and a laptop need knowledge and info

OK so i have had my tm-d700 and got used to all the APRS features and functions, so i call myself familiar with APRS such as beaconing my position and tracking other stations by aprs.fi google maps, or whatever my radio can display.
Now isnt there some other features and such for using my laptop with my radio and my serial cable to connect to some sort of "BBS" or link with someone else using my internal modem in my radio while im mobile? I have never played with any data modes on HF never have done RTTY or things like that. But i am confused. Is there a nationwide packet VHF fm frequency like APRS uses, or does it go by region? could my area have no packet activity? what can you do with a radio like this and a laptop? what else is there other than beaconing my GPS coordinates and sending an SMS to another user who doesnt check his messages anyways... I have a laptop and this excellent radio and antenna and amplifier, and rather than repeaters and simplex voice, i want to put this radio and laptop to full use. again, im not inquiring "how to use APRS" unless i AM confused and it does tie into the APRS frequency. I would really like to do some sort of " email " or "file transfer" or even a group chat or whatever i may be missing.. please help.. 73 to all....

no. its dish network, and clearly it is a sweeping magnetic effect like when you bring a magnet close to a tv screen it changes with the position of the magnet, same thing.. the more the door opens and starts to cross over the television, the more it crosses the screen from right to left, and door all the way open renders the tv nothing but purple and green like a monochrome kinda color.

OK check this out we are not crazy.. i went to my sisters house and ype.. her boyfriend has a tv in the garage. its a 32 inch crt type. its on a wall mount under the garage door track. when he opens the garage door and the top of the door comes up and over the tv, its sweeps across the screen like a magnet is interfering, turns purple and green.. what could be in the dor to be causing this he cant have the door open with the tv on its unviewable.the ONLY thing i come up with is there are magnets in the wheels with the ball bearings on the track.. is that something close.

OK all understood. I might add that i said i had a Diamond 7900NMO, really it is an MFJ 1432 , which is the same specs and design based on what i have seen in person at a HAmfest, only the MFJ i have has 200 watts stamped on it. How come the antennas are identical in design but one says 200 watts on it, and one says 150.. i know sometimes companies will claim a higher number for more sales, but if i burn it up, they should replace it because it is a false spec right? accounting for the well known crappy customer service MFJ has but they do say a Money back no question 1 year warranty as long as you dont over power the manufacturer specs. i have taken in all this info you guys have given me and i know what im going to do, just had that last bit to throw in there.. and also, what good are N connectors when the radio and amp are all SO-239.... 73s

No problem Terry, i appreciate all your advice and time typing. Sorry, didnt mean to sound raged, lol i just like to go through the experiences, even if they are not beneficial. one day i can say to some kid when i become old, "YAh i once wanted to have power and i got this 160 watt amp and learned how to get the best signal possible on VHF." something my dad never did for me was say "ahh what the heck, just do it, maybe it will work". instead it was "what are you doing your wasting your time dont be stupid boy!" .. i hope you understand.. 73, god bless, Merry christmas, happy healthy new year...

Well there's no need to bring up the fact that i have only been a ham for 6 years and familiar with radios a lot earlier than that. I love when you go to a forum to get advice to people you look up to based on more experience, and they shoot you down.... im glad i get on the airwaves and try to be a help to anyone who asks for it, not try to tell them they dont need to have good ideas and dream about good stuff..I have a TM-D700 running 50 watts now, and based on your statement of sticking with a 75 watt mobile, you just spoke yourself that 25 watts will do hardly an improvement, so i instead kept the APRS features instead of a piece of junk FT2900 straight 2m radio.. and the fact that it is a dualband and has a lot of other features. I also have a IC706mkIIg and one of the things i dont like about that is it is strictly one band at a time and no APRS features of GPS input to it. granted it has sideband and i was looking into a Horizontal loop for that on 2 meters as well. but it doesnt mean 2 meter ssb is always open anyways...UHF is dead we all know that, why worry about power or gain on UHF...so you guys better start using it because FCC is about to take that band away from us. Some people get scared to scratch their paint or they are too afraid of looking wierd with antennas on their vehicle so they get the 1/4 wave 13 dollar mag mount thats 14 inches tall.. me on the other hand will go outside and drill a 3/8" hole in the top of my car in the pouring rain, and rip down my headliner and install better than RG58 for a bit more money if it makes THAT MUCH difference over a trunk mount with crappy RG58, which is the reason i started this thread to ask for the little things one may overlook, and of course i want to have a little more power and a little more signal, because after all IT IS only 2 meter FM...i didnt know that was a crime, but i will tell you one thing, THE LAST thing i will EVER buy is an HF amp and an 20/40/10 meter rotating beam on top of a 150 foot tower, because i will stick with my 100 watts on my FT450 and a piece of wire tuned to whatever band i want, and make amateur radio fun and exciting, NOT have a rotating 3 5 or 8 element beam with FULL LEGAL LIMIT and 4 different radios that do the same bands. Just my thoughts.. i want to be suprised that Japan is 40 over S9 , and then im talking to Alaska, and then South America. wow thats fun! I can talk anywhere anyone else can, its propagation not BIG AMPS AND FAT WIRE, like you said Mr.Schieler. 73 to all thanks for all the input..
