How does 1 reply to a classified ad? Many posters don't leave an email address in the body of their ad and don't have an email address in their eham profile. So how do I tell a seller I want that item?

eHam Forums / Elmers / Ten Tec omni VII

I'm finally about to take the plunge into HF with a gently used mint Ten Tec Omni VII with the internal tuner. After much research and waffling I just kept going back to the Omni. It gets great reviews. 1 of the things that has drawn me to the Omni is its reputation for having a no nonsense menu configuration (ease of use). It is WAAY more radio than I'll ever use but buying an Icom 718 as a starter radio would inevitably lead to me wanting to upgrade. Buy once cry once right? I could never afford a new Ten Tec Omni VII, I can't even really afford 1 used but I'm in! I know I'll need a power supply and I plan on using a loop antenna on my property. Any suggestions on a power supply etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks fr the trickle of info guys. Looks like a pretty cool radio. I'm shopping for my 1st HF rig. Perhaps the 7100 should be in consideration.

Hey kj4obr Just curious which antenna you were using w/ your 8900 when you made those S american and European contacts? http://www.arrl.org/band-plan has information on what is where in the bands. I have an 8900 and have made contacts into eastern Europe and South America from North Carolina when conditions were right. Unfortunately, there is more activity on SSB most days even when the band is open. Unless you have a 10m repeater in your neighborhood, you can't sit and wait to hear people, get on 29.600 and start calling CQ you might be surprised who answers. 73 Dave Thanks WE7H. That make sense my feeble mind can grasp.

Lately I've seen many vids of hams w/ emcomm boxes equipped w/ 2meter rigs. Just curious about the range of 2 meters. If the emergency situation disabled repeaters, how effective would 2 meters be then?

Thanks Jerry. Clearly I am new to ham radio. I'm not sure I understand your answer. I'm pretty unclear about the different modes. So just to be clear the fm operation of my radio will not allow me to communicate on 10m using voice?

I guess my question is should I be able to tx/RX on 10m with my CR 8900 antenna clearly using only voice communication? Or will the FM only mode of the ft 8900 not allow me to do so on 10m?

I thought the 8900 was an fm only radio. I saw in the menu an option to turn AM on/off. What will that AM option do for my 10 m operation?
