31  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / 6 & 10m ghost town on: July 06, 2012, 07:28:46 AM
I have a Yaesu 8900 mounted in my car w/ a diamond cr8900 antenna.  I had an elmer help me tune my antenna.  I never hear any activity on 6 or 10m.  I'm beginning to wonder if I might have antenna issues. Is there a freq on 6 or 10 that might be more active I can tune in to for some action?  Any other suggestions I could check into to check my antenna etc?

32  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: dual battery options on: February 23, 2012, 07:03:14 AM
I've heard some operators talk about running the dual battery route in order to prevent your radio from drawing power from your car starting  capability.  When using crossband repeat the mobile rig remains on and when I'm in the middle of nowhere I wouldn't want my car battery to run down to the point of not starting my car because the radio drained it's power.

I have a diamond CR8900 that shipped with out the 10m whip.  I mounted the antenna and took an swr reading and it was off the chart. Would not having the 10m whip wreak havoc with the readings across the 3 other bands?

I have a Yaesu ft8900 that I run mobile w/ a diamond cr8900 antenna. I have never heard any action on 6 or 10 meters.  In researching the diamond antenna I saw that this antenna requires tuning.  I am clueless about how to even begin tuning an antenna. Can any ham guru hold my hand through an antenna tuning?

ARGHH! attempted to bend antenna back into original shape, then noticed that it wasn't bent but broken. Top 5" broken but held together by the "wrap" on the antenna. I tested it on 2 meters and it tx/rx OK.   Where am I going to run into issues with now a severed not bent antenna?

I have a diamond cr8900 that I run with my Yaesu ft 8900. Today wifey neglected to raise garage door fully and I bent the antenna while backing in.  Will my antenna performance suffer any ill effects from the bending?
