3  eHam Forums / Elmers / Balun 1.1 on: May 20, 2013, 08:59:26 AM
I bought this off a web site as a 1.1 balun it was in a tube i cut it out it looks like some wire wrapped around a pieces of pvc pipe there no core it threw the swr way off on my g5rv <a href="http://s7.photobucket.com/user/lauchlin/media/bbbbbbbbbbbbbb/103_3654_zpsfd3e63ad.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y281/lauchlin/bbbbbbbbbbbbbb/103_3654_zpsfd3e63ad.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 103_3654_zpsfd3e63ad.jpg"/></a>

Presently i am using a LDG 1.1 Balun it only rated for 200 watts but it did help lower my SWR very slightly ..I did buy and tried a easy tune 1.1 its rated for more power but it changed the SWR to I think a unacceptable level across 80, 40, and 20 meter.. I found a link on this forum to this site http://www.balundesigns.com/servlet/the-1-dsh-1-Isolation-fdsh-Choke-Baluns/Categories and ended up ordering this balun http://www.balundesigns.com/servlet/the-101/1-cln-1-Isolation-Balun-/Detail was recommend to me to work with the G5RV ....I am using a MFJ g5 at 38 feet i changed the down lead to 300 ohm twin line to help it match up better on 80 meters

I wish i had read this before i bought the W4RT ssb filter waste of time and money in my 718 when compared to the stock filter no different.....

Very interesting my ZS6BKW ... has a better match every were but 80 meter were it's very bad...

That is a feature of the design.

The G5RV design should give a reasonable match on 80, 40, 20 and 12m.

The ZS6BKW was designed to give a better match on more bands, but 80m was not one of them.

I kind of knew that but was hoping it would have been better on 80 meters its un readable with my lg-100a ......But 40,20,17,10, match up great with the ZS6BKW
7  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: g5rv or ZS6BKW on: May 10, 2013, 04:04:44 PM
I have both took the g5rv down and put up the zs6bkw and it match better every were but 80 meter ...

Here's my SWRs for my ZS6BKW. On 80m, I have a 500pf series doorknob capacitor on the coax side of the 1:1 choke. That cap is shorted out on all bands except 80m.

3.85 MHz, 2:1

7.05 MHz, 1.3:1

14.175 MHz, 1.4:1

18.14 MHz, 3.2:1

24.95 MHz, 1.8:1

28.4 MHz, 6:1

29.3 MHz, 1.1:1

Very interesting my ZS6BKW (w8amz) is far better made than my mfj g5rv and has a better match every were but 80 meter were it's very bad i will give your idea a try cause in the end i think the zs6bkw is a better wire ......thanks

I have both took the g5rv down and put up the zs6bkw and it match better every were but 80 meter which i use a fair bit over 10.1 ..I put my G5RV back up but changed the ladder line to 300 ohm now i get this i never use 10 meter is it worth put the zs6bkw back up  it match a little better on a few of the other band but not bye much thanks

All fixed got rid of my old watt meter and bought a good one LP-100A Digital Vector Wattmeter i get 600 watts with about 70 in ..........thanks

I am using a ic 718 in to a LDG IT-100 to my amp then my HK sa2060 tuner to ant ....typical swr on 40 is 1.5.1 at the radio with amp on all bands
11  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / Lower out put on 40 meters sb-200 on: April 20, 2013, 08:24:17 PM
I have noticed my amp will make 700 watts on 80 meter and 650 on 20 but on 40 i only get 500 i am not overly concerned just curious ..And i am using 70 watts for drive
12  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: Sb-200 no plate current at idling on: April 14, 2013, 11:03:53 AM

I have all the mods done to mine and am getting 80 ma at idling

I would not get in a twist on 80 vs 90ma idle key down no signal as it is not rocket science and meter accuracy and/or line voltage can easily account for this too. I would worry more about high idle current than low. The higher the current the higher the zero signal plate dissipation.

Oh i am fine were it is manual said 90 ma i get 80 ma and my amp is working great ..
13  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: Sb-200 no plate current at idling on: April 14, 2013, 09:10:43 AM
Now I'm confused.  My SB 200 has no GRID  current at idling and exciting it with the FT 950 at 35 watts out in CW mode, the grid current reading goes negative.  That is, it dips below zero.  Plate current reads abt 300ma, and HV at idle abt 2300, during transmit drops to around 1800 best I can remember.  It has the Harbach mods, all of 'em.  Wouldn't think the Harbach mod which replaces the original 2K 7 watt  R18 with a 4.7K 5 watt would do that to the grid current, BWDIK.

I have all the mods done to mine and am getting 80 ma at idling
14  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: Sb-200 no plate current at idling on: April 01, 2013, 02:58:35 PM
When you key the amplifier the cutoff bias is reduced (-145 Vdc to -7 Vdc ) and the tubes should draw some current (60-80 mA). This depends on the diode string or Zener that has been placed into the circuit.

Some meters will just barely move with such low current.

Thank you very much i did not realize i had to key the amp the manual just said with no driver output from the exciter ..........Now shows 85 +- ma with no drive in ssb mode idling ......thanks again my green horn is showing

First Amp i have ever owned seems to work fine puts out 500 watts on 80 meters same on 40 with about 70 watts of drive but the manual states there should be about 90 ma idling ............Thanks
