My guess is health issues. A lot of us are not that young anymore. so what do you do, you set up a business like this, make a number of god contributions then you end up in the hospital for a few weeks. I hope and at the same time I don't that this is the case but he should pass the tech on to someone else and be done with it. Too bad it looked like a nice product. But way too many situations exactly like mine. Maybe he doesn't like quebecers. Oh we'll tabernach!

This winter, my av620 vertical started acting strange. It turned out that the nuts attached to the u-bolt that attached the antenna to the mast came loose, allowing the antenna to slide down the mast. There was a lock washer on each bolt. I tightened them (not easy at -10C) and a few weeks later they came loose again.
So now i'm putting up a new antenna mounted high on a wall on the side of my house. It is a beam and the support structure will attach to the gable and the reinforced wall of the attic. There will be 4 threaded rods extending out of the wall to which I will attach some custom brackets for the antenna. The thing is, I need to rent a lift to attach the antenna and I want to be sure that it won't come loose over time, or at least for several years.
So I'm thinking of using a lock washer, and two bolts, the kind that have the nylon insert so are self locking. The two nuts will be tensioned against each other and the bracket. I will also use locktite.
In your experience, is this a good way to go? Or is there some better arrangement?
Thanks for any advice. Tom

I'm looking forward to it. If it works as well as my verticle (av640) ill be reAlly happy especially if it helps to get rid of all the noise around here. My plan is as follows: I will mount a two inch mast to the wall( 1/4 " thick tubing specked for the load.) as well as the gable. Attached to this are two right angle " angle irons( made of aluminum 8" x 8" x. 8" and 1/2 thick. Something like this: ]| On the bottom angle, the rotator will be mounted, and a shaft will run up through the other angle which has a rotator bearing. This will be right at the gable. The mast will continue to the antenna which will be 6-8' higher putting it at around 36 feet high. I've done all the calculations and it will withstand winds of 90mph with a defeating of a factor of 50% The tubing is aluminum 1/4 wall 2 1/4 t6066 (if my memory. Serves me) Now the only catch is I need to rent a lift that will get me to a height of 30 feet.

Unfortunately many large companies do not grasp the concept of increased productivity, its all about cutting costs at any cost. So the productivity drops, the frustration increases, and before you know it, the company is closing down or operations are shifted to another part of the world.
They kill creativity and motivation.

Thanks for all the advice. On second thought I think I will go with my original plan. A mini beam (ma5b) with a wall mount. Will be about the same height, no need for permits, and much less danger. Not only would I need to get the permit, I'd need to challenge the cites laws concerning antennas. Not worth the effort when I can get the same thing mounted on a wall. Maybe in a future qty... Thanks

On Saturday, I heard them as they were calling 4's. They stayed forever on a given number! By the time they got to the two's couldnj't hear them anymore. Today though, on 15 again they were calling numbers. They were at 8. So I decided to go upstairs for a few minutes, and when I came back, they were at 4's! Luckily I hung out for a bit and realized they were counting down. When they got to two's I snagged them in two calls. This was my 200th country and most likely will be my 150th confirmed on LOTW. After this I decided to check out 12m. They were at least 10 over 9, not calling by numbers, and I got them on the first call.
You just have to be patient...

So, now the work begins. Theres a house a half mile away where they have a decent tower (much better than a tv type tower) up about 35 feet high , complete with a 4 or 5 element CB beam and a rotator. They told me it's mine if I take it away. So, how does one start? I presume towers are bolted to some type of plate or rods in the ground?
Anyhow, assuming I can get it down, where does one find the ground rods or plates? Is there a good write up somewhere on installing towers?
Thanks for any help.

Hey, anyone know w2irt? The guy over there on the DX forum, on the honour role or close to it? The guy with the huge beam on a 75 foot high tower?
Well, when I got started, he recommended the TGM antenna. He has first hand experience with it and says it works well.
I've looked at all three of these antennas, and will probably go for the tgm. Did you know, they sell an add on boom and element to get it to three elements?
You know, no matter what anyone says, antennas can perform better than they think. My lowly vertical, while it generates 10db more noise than my dipole, it also has signals 10db up on it. I have worked everywhere with it, and in the last month added a ton from south asia. And just around the beginning of the month, one of the honour role guys told me I could not work the areas that I did. From what I heard, the TGM is way better.
Enjoy your antenna. I'll be getting one too.

...I just upgraded computers including getting rid of XP and it was "good riddance".
"Good riddance?" XP was and is one of the most stable windows platforms out there. I know of companies who are buying new machines that are STILL getting Win XP professional installed on them. Yes, I agree that its dated and that as it gets older there are less and less software offerings that will run on them, but tell that to the people who still run Win 98 because there are certain programs that will NOT run on the newer systems due to speed and size differences! Planned obsolescence is all well and good--but would YOU want to be treated that way when you get older? Yes, it does happen to humans too! It says something for the companies limited IT experience and understanding. Most Stable OS I ever used was 64 bit Vista and 64 bit 7 is about the same. As far as stable old OS'es, Win 2000 was far more stable than XP was and before that NT4. Win9x were the most unstable of the lot. As far as not run on newer system due to speed and size is pure BS. If it does not run it is because the code either poorly written or not properly compiled into proper 32 bit code. Again this points back to IT's lack of understanding and knowledge of how to adapt and change with times. No way would I by new modern hardware and instal a 13 year old OS on it. Dumb. I agree that perhaps in the past, an IT department may have thought vista and win7 not as stable as XP but I doubt anymore. By far, the reason for still getting XP on companies computers is cost. The last company I worked for was still on XP and in a few months will beging going to Win7. Why? We had 40,000 computers to upgrade. Along with that, we also had to upgrade copies of Office. So, 40,000 * $500 gives a cool 20 million and another 20 million or so in personnel costs. Not small change when the board wants costs in IT reduced.
