76  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Anyone want to see how a NCC-1 Antenna phaser kills noise? on: January 18, 2013, 08:33:49 AM
Hi Chuck,
My primary tx and receive antenna is a HyGain AV640 mounted on top of the garage.  The "noise" antenna is about 30 feet away and I use a DX Engineering active receive antenna for this.  Since it is relatively close, it only works on 40 meters to 10m, but I really only need it on 40 and 20, the noise sources otherwise are acceptable.
Very worthwhile purchase.

Have any of you used the MFJ-1025, (or 6), RFI reducer?  How does it next to the the DX Engineering one?

Here's a write up

I have the DX engineering one....here is an example of how it works

This is a capture on my pan adapter of WWV with it out and then in....damn neighbour and his chinese high intensity lighting!!!~
Download the file first...
79  eHam Forums / RFI / EMI / RE: Plasma RFI on: January 15, 2013, 06:26:57 PM
I'd love to only have a plasma in my neighbourhood !!
My neighbour has high intensity lighting that he insists on running during the day and called the cops on me when I asked him to turn them off during the day. They generate 40db of noise from 7MHz to 18MHz.
Not a problem anymore....
I bought a DX Engineering NCC-1 antenna phaser and an active noise antenna.  Here is a link to my web site showing a video of noise over WWV without the phaser and when it is switched in...speaks for itself.

It's best to right click on the link and save it locally.  3.5 MB in size.

I've been plagued by a neighbors high intensity discharge lights which he insists on running in the daytime.  So I bought a DX Engineering NCC-1 antenna phasing unit and an active receive antenna for the noise.  Was it a good purchase?
Here you decide!  Here is a spectrum from my P3 showing the 10MHz WWV signal (barely heard) before and after....

Extremely good purchase!  Too bad there isn't a computer interface for it!!

81  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Any DX-ers use an Elecraft P3? on: November 07, 2012, 05:22:25 AM
The P3 becomes even more useful when you use the SVGA adapter and add a large monitor.  Greater resolution.
I wrote software that allows you to control the P3 and view the video on your computer screen.  You do need a video capture board though but this really makes the P3 useful.  The software is free, you can check it out at va2fsq.com
Working on a remote access version if there is some interest.

Not much of a contester and didn't get through to many stations that I tried, but I did get 3 ATNO's.  Leichtenstein, Jan Mayan(on 17) and Gabon on 17m.  Couldn't break through the pile ups on the ZD80 though. which I needed.  And I finally heard several chinese stations and singapore, hong kong and so on, but never made it through in the small window where the bands were open.
Good experience though.
Now sitting at 182.

So where are they????Its the contest today, no spots, and no signals???
Tried at 5-7Z and now at 6:30PM EST, there's no activity at all.
So much for that contest.

Thanks for all of the hints.  Now I have to leave it up to the propagation gods.  I'm optimistic though, everytime I couldn't get a particular zone, the help here has let me land the station so I'll keep at it.
VE2ITZ, I do have a VU and I can check my logs to see when I got it.  I seem to recall it was pretty easy.

I've been in number of contest but still never heard china. In the contests, thev've been buried under the loud guns but  also I probably have not been listening at the right time.

Can anyone give me some hints on working China from Montreal?  I have seen them spotted but I never hear a peep.
In the past, this forum has given me many good hints on working new areas of the world.  As in the past with Australia, Japan, Thailand etc, all I needed was to know when, and then I eventually snagged them.. China has remained elusive though.
Thanks for any hints.

Just snagged JT1BV, Mongolia....never heard a peep from this area of the world, but at grey line, I snagged a bunch of long path Austrailia and this one!  Just when you figure you will never get a certain part of the world, BANG!
That's 4 ATNO's in the last 3 days.
Getting there,  179 countries now in 15 months.
88  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: 5U - NIGER Activation in October! on: September 30, 2012, 05:51:58 PM
Got him on my first call on RTTY.  Great day for me, three ATNO's Niger, UK mil on Cypruss and Marshall Island.  All in 1 to 4 calls.
Go figure, nothing for the last 8 weeks or so and then 3 new ones.

89  eHam Forums / DXing / HK0NA LOTW is out on: August 10, 2012, 01:41:05 PM
Just noticed, all my QSO's are posted.  Got my card several months ago, but now the LOTW records are there
90  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Why did he ignore my responses? on: July 29, 2012, 08:06:44 PM
Finally got them both! Good weekend, three new ones at an overall total of 172.  They sure seem more difficult these days!
