1  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: Use of filter on PSK? on: December 12, 2012, 07:10:36 AM
Sometimes I use the ATT on my Yaesu 840, but its easier to turn the volume down on whatever you are using to receive and process the signals, particularly when someone is way over-driving their signal or using a beam or something and have a super strong signal.

Believe it or not, I talked to a fellow in northwest Canada who was xmitting 500 watts psk31, he said?  weird

Some of the Olivia modes are a little faster.   Abbreviation helps, such as ur for your, no need for "and" use the & etc.   I've had some amazing QSOs with Olivia including not being able to see the other stations signal on the waterfall.    Make sure to turn your "squelch" function on the software, off. or you might miss the signal all together, and use the RSID function, too.

pskreporter lets you spot CW mode...its the 4th option under "all modes" drop down box.   I figure you may never see it very often because hams aren't spotting CW operators?
btw, I spot Olivia, Domino, MFSK16 etc when I see them or talk to someone in those modes.  Most of what you see is either psk31 or jt65 spots.

Throw my 3 cents on the table  Roll Eyes
I just built a 20 to 10 meter vertical and used the DX Engineering radial plate. ((Super product, btw)).  I had never ordered anything from this company.  I ordered the plate and several other items (( odds & ends connectors, z817 tuner, so forth)) on a Wednesday evening over the Internet, got a confirmation email right away, and the next morning an email that everything had been shipped and I got it all on Friday.  Saturday morning I was laying down radials with the plate.   Then I ordered a few more items the next Wednesday and same thing: I had it all on Friday.  Great Service!!  I would expect similar service if I called them on the phone?     With Christmas coming up, I've already given my wish list to my kids and suggested $$ so I can get something else from DX.

I wish one of the other big name ham radio "companies" whom I shall not name had such good service.

5  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: Too much info on PSK31?? on: October 14, 2012, 08:35:39 AM
I've had conversations with interesting people after they sent their long macro and then I asked them some questions and got them to talking about themselves instead of their station and equipment, etc.  They came across as surprised that someone actually wanted to talk rather than just swap information by macro.   One fellow was a WW2 vet with some interesting stories.   Another wanted to talk about his boat and another his grand kids.  No problem on my end  Smiley

and then there was one fellow who  pointedly and brusquely  told me all he was interested in was a contact in the log book and did not want to engage in conversation.  Rude IMO, but I'm sure he has made A LOT of contacts and missed out on some interesting chats.

Many times someone sees you and they just don't answer for some reason, happens to me all the time.  I know I'm getting out according to pskreporter.   And many times, I see some one calling,  but can't or won't answer for some reason, maybe logging, the xyl is talking to me, whatever.    Don't give up!   kt4ep@arrl.net if I can offer some assistance
7  eHam Forums / Company Reviews / RE: MFJ on: July 28, 2012, 06:45:23 PM
Bought a Cushcraft vhf/uhf antenna in 1992.  I won't buy a Cushcraft again - now.   From reviews, it seems problems are to be had since MFJ took over.  I have several MFJ products.  I had to "rebuild" a 1 to 1 balun and 4 to 1 balun I bought from them because of shoddy workmanship.  I like my analyzer, though, no problems with it.  Bought these items last year.  I ordered several small products last year such as ceramic insulators, wire, two G5RVs, and nylon line.   I ordered a colinear array and never could get a good reason for the delay in their filling  my order so I cancelled it.   I think the customer service and quality control departments have  problems.   Lack of qualified people?  They don't care?   Jaded employees?  They know it all?  Old ham employees with old attitudes?  I don't know.   But again, I will still buy things from MFJ, but just be a bit wiser in dealing with the company.

well, according to Kim Kommando, you are a looser if you use a laptop or desktop.   Go figure.
9  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Difference between a vertical pole and a vertical wire antenna on: June 27, 2012, 10:03:22 AM
You aren't going to tell much difference in the bandwidth.
10  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: To slope a dipole antenna or keep it horizontal? What is recommended? on: May 02, 2011, 07:30:22 AM
I'd get it horizontal as high as possible.  If you don't like it that way can you move it around and experiment?
