Try a ferrite core on the audio line, since that's where the problem seems to lie.  Get one of the rectangular ones with the plastic cover that open up.  Put as many turns of the audio cable as you can through the core, and then close it back up.  That will almost certainly fix the problem.

2  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Finally!...someone actually signing portable so I could tell where they were! on: September 16, 2011, 05:48:50 AM
But I'm not operating portable; I'm operating fixed at the location printed on my FCC license.  Why would I sign portable when I'm not?  If I were to visit some other location, I'd sign as portable.  Should I operate as portable when I'm at my Maryland QTH, listed on my license, but not when I travel to California, where I would, in fact, be portable?

The problem is that the FCC no longer requires ham calls to reflect the old call area structure.  This changed some time ago.

There used to be a service that printed transparent labels with call, name, etc., for exactly that purpose.  I don't know if it's still around.  I used it as SV0CE when I lived in Athens.

You can buy transparent labels and print on them with a computer printer.  Just stick the label with your call on the postcard, and it's a QSL card.  You can print or buy labels for the back, too.

I also like the idea of taking your own photos and using them to make your own QSL cards.  That's what I do.

4  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: MFJ 998 Firmware upgrade on: September 16, 2011, 05:15:33 AM
I just upgraded the firmware in my five-year old MFJ-998.  It works so much better after the upgrade, it's amazing.  It tunes faster, is more stable, tunes a wider range of loads, and more.  I strongly recommend it.

By the way, if you use a Windows 7 computer to do the upgrade, you may get an error about missing a file named COMCTL32.OCX.  The way to fix this is to right-click the executable, then left-click on Run as administrator.  The executable wants to make changes to a file that aren't allowed unless it has administrator rights.

I tried to update the firmware in my MFJ-998, but I get an error that COMCTL32.OCX is missing, even though I can see the file right there.

I'm using Windows 7, 32-bit.  Any ideas?

MFJ said they would email me information about it, but I didn't get anything from them.
