Eric Schmidt's daughter's trip report:

https://sites.google.com/site/sophieinnorthkorea/home

I hope that intrepid doesn't go in the winter or at least pack some thick coats. It's cold. Even indoors.

EXTREMELY cold in the winter, and HOT as hell and rainy in the summer.
73, Gene AF3Y

Sounds aweful. Thanks for protecting us Gene.

I wouldn't bother. Just work another one. There are a few on somewhat regularly. I worked a half dozen last year, mostly in contests, without much bother.

If they upload, great. If not, I will work another one. I've actually had decent luck getting confirmations out of there.
3  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: MJ/ON6NB from May 24th until May 30th on: Yesterday at 04:17:08 AM
For DX on 40 & 80, we'll have a HF2V vertical (40&80m) and a 18 meter (60 feet) high spiderpole that will be used to make a 1/4 wave vertical for 80 meter. Hope to work you.

But more important, I wish you better weather and safety. Oklahoma is front page news here as well.

Cedric

We've been very lucky where I live we've only had rain.

I hate to even me mention it, but the bands are really bad from the static though. I'll take staticky bands any day though over a tornado.

Re:AD9DX "LotW represents a small fraction"

Anybody know what fraction LoTD (Logbook on the Desk) represents?

I'd guess 75% of all other QSOs are logged.

"Yes, ergonomics (look and fell) are important to many as well. K3 does look pretty plain. I  personally have no had a chance to play with a 3000 yet so jury is still out with me."

I added the 73 CNC knobs. Now my K3 looks cool and I can spin up and down the bands in no time! Performance is outstanding with the P3.
Harris. K9RJ

I really want to get a set of those. They look sweet.

It's amazing how many QSOs have taken place over the air. LoTW represents a small fraction.

The whole Eco movement pisses me off and when it interferes with my hobby it makes it worse. Allowing some "pristine" areas to go un enjoyed is as silly as expecting that if people stay away these areas will become "pristine".

Wow  Roll Eyes  Roll Eyes  Roll Eyes what a statement!

You do know that the primary meaning of Pristine is:

a. Remaining in a pure state; uncorrupted by civilization.

Apparently you haven't seen the ways these "uninhabited" places look. Why else are there a bunch of wealthy hippies willing to pay to go there to pick up trash. I am glad you care about the environment. I figure I'll worry about my carbon footprint when volcanos cease to erupt.

Wierd....It looks like their OQRS is bureau only?....When I filled out my information on OQRS I was never re-directed to a credit card order screen.....man, that's a new one on me....Looks like I may have to dig up some cash for a registered mail request as backup.....

For some reason I was thinking LoTW was going to happen for them. Maybe I was wrong.
9  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Good News About Kingman Reef - KH5K on: May 21, 2013, 03:13:48 PM

You knew nothing. I think DXAC knows better than you if KH5K meets the minimum requirements to remain on the DXCC list, otherwise they would have deleted it. I worked/confirmed K5K as Z32XX when I lived in Macedonia but have not worked KH5K from here as K0AP. Yes, I am selfish in that regard, since I like KH5K to stay on the DXCC list.

73 Dragan K0AP

The thing is it DOESN'T meet the requirement. It had to be grandfathered in. I think grandfathering things in isn't ever a great idea. I understand some of the implications, but convoluted rules only add confusion.

But your right Dragan, I am just a fool  Roll Eyes

You never sign with your name so I had to look up your call sign on QRZ.com to find out. Well Jon, again, if DXAC removed the "grandfathered" requirement or rule (however you wanna to call it), many other DXCC entities would have to be removed from the list. Why spoil the fun?

I don't think you are a fool, quite the opposite. Maybe a little stubborn, just like me.   Smiley

73 Dragan K0AP

Stubborn for sure!  I just like rules to apply everywhere equally. I understand the implications of it, and do think it would muck things up a bit.  But I don't think getting on Honor Roll would be any easier.

I also don't think Kosovo should be added at the moment, but am sure it will at some point.

Can we have Dragan go too, since he thinks you are self centered for wanting an entity deleted??

I still think given the dimensions given at high tide, the thing is disqualified by size.

AD9DX, luckily for the 99% of the HAM population, KH5K will remain on the DXCC list, no matter what you and/or W2IRT think and want.

73 Dragan K0AP

I seriously doubt that 99% of the HAM population knows that KH5K even is. Not sure why you are so hell bent on keeping irrelevant rocks in the middle of nowhere on the DXCC list. Unless its because you have it and enjoy the old boys club. I think it is you that is selfish, especially if you don't have it Dragan.

I want to work all entities on the list, but I think it would be truly selfish to expect others to go to Kimgman and risk their lives activating it.

AD9DX, don't you think it's not risky (or selfish as you say) to want someone to go activate VK0H, 3Y0, 3Y/B or other dangerous  DXCC entities? Why would KH5K be any different? If we follow your methodology, half of the DXCC entities will have to be removed from the list just because they are dangerous and risky to land on. To want a DXCC removed from the DXCC list just so you can move up on the HR list in my opinion is a little self centered thinking. And yes, I have worked K5K years ago.

73 Dragan K0AP

Yep, I knew it. You've got it, and you will protest it getting deleted even when it's 5 feet under water. Who's selfish now Huh
12  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Lower Your Power and Improve Your Pileup Skill on: May 21, 2013, 07:47:32 AM
"The Beacon":  I heard this guy last week; I was driving home listening to 17m phone, and there was a fair-sized simplex pileup going on.  "Mister Beacon" YELLED his call about every 7-8 seconds.  It didn't matter if the DX station was working someone else, or calling "who is the Nancy Whiskey station?" or anything else; Mr. Beacon keyed up every 7-8 seconds, no matter what, and shouted his callsign, as loudly and automatically as a foghorn.  :-(

Yet another reason to master CW and use it.  I avoid SSB whenever possible.  Cool
(Unless in masochist mode....... Grin)  Halfass,Homemade phonetics makes me sick Angry
73, Gene AF3Y

CW is just as full of QRMers and Nut jobs just like SSB.  My real worry with CW contacts is that I am never certain if its real or a pirate.  With SSB the odds are less that I will get scammed.  A little thing like an Accent can go a long way versus CW were anyone can easily pretend to be anyone else.

Oh Yeah?Huh SPLEEEEET!!!! HOLA HOLA HOLA HOLA
Was that really ME, or a pirate? Roll Eyes

I don't know about you, but it does not usually take me long to pick up on ol' Slim working CW.  A lot (or a little) listening goes a long way.

73, Gene AF3Y

And CW has it’s non stop keying down on the Ops Freq along with fake replies and Lids dit ditting almost precisely on top of the Dxs signal.  For an experienced CWer like you Gene it may be easy to pick out the ops reply from the mayhem that’s happening on the Dx’s freq but for the less experienced it’s a lot more daunting and a lot harder than just being able to listen and pick out human speech during a few Hola’s!

Anyway I am rubbish at CW so maybe that’s just my problem, but I do know I am hearing a whole lot of QRMers during Dxpeditions using CW and that’s really hard to deal with if your not proficient in CW.
As for old Slim I have no idea when he’s lurking on CW except for beam direction and cluster info I can’t tell Slim from the real thing.  It seems to me that most of these Dxpeditions are using computers for sending replies, so can Slim if he wants to.

Robert

I think you've hit on something there. When I first learned CW at the ripe old age of 9 I remember listening to pileups and was amazed that anyone could make sense out of them.

To be honest the only way to make sense out of them is to force yourself to listen to the bedlam. After a while it will be come easier, MUCH easier. It's kinda like lifting weights though. You have to endure pain to get the result.  After a while you will learn to discern the signal you want to hear and reject the ones you don't care about. Just be prepared to take a lot do Asprin in the mean time.

Sounds like fun. Good luck and a heartfelt thank you for using LoTW!   If we can ever get rid of this crazy weather in he Midwest, I would love to get you guys on 40 and 80.
