16  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: Problem with an Icom 718 on: November 22, 2011, 01:11:30 AM
No, I never heard of a CPU reset.  I'll give it a try when I get back home.

As for a repair shop, there's not one in this area that works on radios that I'm aware of, so I might wind up sending it off if it needs repair.
17  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / Problem with an Icom 718 on: November 19, 2011, 09:07:25 PM
I was working the November Sweepstakes contest and all of a sudden my IC-718 quite receiving.  I did some playing around and it's all on the upper bands, 17m up to 10m that it's having problems.  On 20m and below it still works fine.  I can transmit, but can't receive.

Any ideas of: 1) what to look for that might cure it, or if that doesn't work, 2) where to send it to get it repaired?

Thanks,
Robert
18  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Icom 820H Mods on: November 12, 2011, 05:24:35 PM
Thanks for the input, but I already have an 820H and except for the lack of range in regards to receiving I like it pretty well.  I'd really like an 910H, and if I stay with VHF/UHF stuff I'll likely go that route or look at the Kenwood, but for now I'd like to see if this is something that I enjoy enough to put more money into it before doing so.

I did a search and found the information that I needed to extend the receive and transmit ranges of this radio.  I'm mainly concerned with the receive part, since some things, like the ISS are outside of what it can receive from the factory.  The mods involve removing 4 diodes, 2 for receive and 2 for transmit.  They're listed as D25, D26, D27 and D28, the first 2 are for receive and the second 2 are for transmit.  Since I'm not involved in either MARS or CAP I'm mainly interested in the receive mods for the ISS, but it goes on to say that in order to "cross band repeat" that I do need to do the transmit mods as well.

The diagrams and information on how to do it is pretty well laid out and explained on several websites, but I'd like to talk to someone on here that's actually done it before I start doing things to my radio.

So has anyone on here done that, and if so how did it work?  Any problems to watch out for, besides the obvious, like don't remove the wrong parts?

Thanks,
Robert

20  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Yaesu FT-8800 accessory port on: November 07, 2011, 04:26:53 PM
OK, never mind.  I DID only program the left memories!  So all is well in radio land again.

Damn, computers can really hurt my head sometimes.
21  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Yaesu FT-8800 accessory port on: November 07, 2011, 04:24:36 PM
Well, it just got weirder.  By the time that I'd posted the initial question and went back to fiddling with the radio, it will now come on just fine.  But now the left side is fully loaded with everything, and the right side is stuck on 430.00 when in "memory" mode and , but works fine in VFO mode.

I've already gone through the steps on pg. 24 of the owner's manual to lock or unlock the knob, but I still can't change the frequency away from 430.000 and channel 1.  It's like the computer only programmed one of the receivers!

22  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / Yaesu FT-8800 accessory port on: November 07, 2011, 04:01:39 PM
I've got an odd problem, and I'm not even sure where to put, but this seems like the right place.

Anyway, I got the program and cable that I needed to set everything up so that I could load multiple FT-8800s with the exact same data in a hurry.  So I finished cloning the first radio from the computer and everything looked great until I removed the accessory cable and after that the radio would not turn on.

The situation that I have right now is that the radio will turn and looks fine as long as the cable is plugged in the accessory port, but when it's not there the radio will not turn on.

Any suggestions???  I've reset the radio by going to "all reset" and with no channels loaded in it I can't turn it on without the cable from the computer plugged into the back of the radio.  I re-loaded all of the data that I'd put in, the frequencies, CTCSS codes and whatnot, and then the same thing; cable in, the radio will turn on, cable removed, it won't turn on.
23  eHam Forums / QRP / Icom 703 Plus value on: August 23, 2011, 02:44:07 PM
I have the chance to pick up a like new or new Icom 703 Plus and I'm wondering what such a radio is worth.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What should I expect to pay for a 910H?  The 23cm band interests me, but it's not something that I've ever used, so I'm not as concerned about that module being in there, but any suggestions about which modules to look for with this radio?

So what about stepping up a bit money wise and going with an Icom 910H?  I found one locally, but they are pricier than the 736R or the 790.

Anyone have any experience with that radio?

By the way, on a sidenote, I got a free 2 meter 11 element beam Saturday! Shocked  Our club was contacted by an old ham that was getting out of it and donated 2 towers, 50 feet each.  one had no antenna presently on it and the other had a 10/15/20m triband yagi and an 11 element 2m on top of that.   One of the guys had already spoken for the triband, which wasn't what I was  really interested in, but when I mentioned that if no one had spoken for the 2m that I'd gladly buy it or take it.  The owner gave it to me and said that it worked great for him for some longer distance, non-repeater stuff.  He warned the guy that wanted the triband that it did not work correctly and he hadn't worried about why.

So now I'm a guy with an antenna and no radio!  How's that for weird?! Tongue

How likely are these modules to failure if they're currently working?  Your statement about bad modules peaked my "oh no" meter.
27  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: Need an all mode multi-band VHF/UHF...Suggestions? on: July 26, 2011, 10:35:53 AM
Thanks, I've found a few of each, one FT-736R that's loaded with all of the bells and whistles and all 4 bands.  I have an Icom 736 that covers the 6m band with 100 watts output, so I'm not as concerned about that.  The 23cm band seems like something entertaining and I'd like to play with that.

I just can't decide which radio to get.  Definitely a tough choice.  It's a lot easier, and cheaper initially to find one of these radios with just the standard modules, but it does seem to be a bit more difficult to find the bells and whistles to go with them once you have the radio.  Or maybe I'm just too impatient! I knew that the FT-736R came with just 2 of the frequency modules, but I didn't realize that it didn't come already set-up for CTCSS, but I guess in that era CTCSS was something pretty new.

I did find a Kenwood TS-790A that's in good shape for a decent price.  Does anyone have any first hand experience with that one?  And by chance does anyone know how it compares to the FT-736R?

29  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / Need an all mode multi-band VHF/UHF...Suggestions? on: July 25, 2011, 12:13:59 PM
I want to start working weak signal stuff, SSB, CW, on 2m and 70cm, maybe later the 23cm band I'm going to need something more serious than a mobile FM, which is all that I have now.  I looked at a few new rigs, like the Icom 9100, and they're pricey.  Might be nice as a later addition or replacement, but for now I just want to get up and on the air on these modes and bands.  I was thinking about either a Yaesu FT-736R, a Kenwood TS-790A, or maybe an Icom 910H (if I can find one).  From the looks of things I can likely get one of the first 2 rigs for around $500 with the 2m and 70cm bands in them.  I don't really have a clue what the 910H would run, since so far I've found no ads or auctions for them anywhere, so they might be out of my ballpark, at least for now.

I'm newly re-licensed, about 15 years out of it, but back with a vengance.  Previously I had pretty much ignored VHF/UHF stuff and done nothing but HF DX, and largely with CW, since CW was also a part of my job it just made sense.

Basically, I know that the rigs that the 3 rigs that I mentioned aren't made anymore, and I don't have any issues with that, I just don't want to get something that I'll have problems with later that can't be cured, or won't do what I want it to do.  By the way, it needs to be able to operate on FM as well with a separate antenna for that.

It's too bad that it seems that no one is interested in making all mode VHF/UHF rigs anymore.  I guess that the demand just wasn't high enough to justify it.

30  eHam Forums / VHF / UHF / RE: VHF/UHF Dual Band Vertical Antenna Height on: July 23, 2011, 07:09:33 AM
WB6BYU, that sounds like a good plan.  I'm a newly re-licensed ham after 20 years off of the air.  Back then if it wasn't HF, and mostly CW at that, I just wasn't interested in it, but this time around I'm active in an ARES group, so they're really active on the 2m and 70 cm bands.  So VHF/UHF is a new thing for me.

I had known about the polarity, but I hadn't thought about it when I brought up antennas.  And the J Pole isn't really something that I'd thought about at all.  I did some looking around the internet and it looks like something that's easy to make and cheap, and since I enjoy making antennas and I'm always game for saving money, so it sounds like the way to go.

After you reminded me about polarity I gave it some thought and I'm thinking that when I do get a good all modes VHF/UHF rig that I'll put up a vertical for working the local stuff and a nice directional antenna for any time that band conditions will let me reach out a bit.  Like most hobbies that I have they quickly morph into a lifestyle with the quantity to prove it.  But for now big spending in ham equipment has to be put on hold temporarily since I'm about to buy a new milling machine for my business, a sole proprietorship.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the input.  By the way is WB4BYU a vanity call sign for the university or is it just coincidence?  Just curious since I put in an application a week ago for a vanity call sign.
