1  eHam Forums / Special Event Stations / RE: How do you organize a special event? on: May 17, 2013, 06:56:12 AM
A lot of good info in WB4AEJ post. N7P QSL is a photo shopped picture of B-25D "Grumpy" done by the person in group who does that, and enjoys doing it. Picked N7P as resembles aircraft registration number ( N number) the P for Paine Field. Aviation Day event is hosted by Paine Field, Snohomish WA county air field. They ask for a short press release blurb, did a FD type. Raining now, hope clears for Saturday.

County hunting spots @ www.w6rk.com Read the mail to get a feel for what's up on air. Kinda like DX Summit, for county hunters. Find spots are very helpful as hunters use SSB, CW & a bunch of digital modes. Careful you don't get "hooked"

Digital is good for MARAC All Counties award(s) www.marac.org/awards.pdf  in the rules on page 9 under modes states any FCC authorized mode are OK.
Several are running mobile digital and putting out counties. Check the MARAC web site forum & planned trips while looking at the rules. Most digital CHer activity is on 14074 and 074 on the older bands. 30 & 17 mtrs has been used too but don't recall freqs. Have been hunting counties since 1970 and still need over 300 in any mode ! Don't have room in Subaru to do digital as mobile but do run CW (stopped) Good luck.

Operation is a go as listed. Received entry pass, parking pass and OK'ed location for station on flight line. Extened WX forecast looks good for flight ops.
5  eHam Forums / CW / RE: CW Filters on: April 27, 2013, 05:51:38 AM
I put a 400 hz in my IC 718, made the low end rig into an acceptable CW rig. Not a high end contest rig for sure but I don't have to have the manual open on operating desk like did with FT 897.

7  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Radials vs. ground rod in condensed space on: March 20, 2013, 08:20:29 AM
Have used 4 / 5 BTV ground mounted with & with out radials over the last 40+ years. All worked, radials were better. What use now is a HB "S9" type antenna with Icom AH 4 at feed point and what ever radials can string out, 80 - 10. As live in condo, most ops are P/M. Set up for QSO parties in a state park cabin/ KOA cabin. Spent all of Feb in vacation rental in desert with this set up. Missed very few that I heard in MN, LA, NC, MS QP's. Hey it works and did I mention had fun. Do find a good ground for shack helps too, water pipe most times.
8  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Jackite guying recommendations? on: March 07, 2013, 07:15:55 AM
Have MFJ 33' mast and just completed month long deployment in desert (snow birding). Mast survived wire(s) did not. # 22 stranded inverted L for 160 broke a couple of times. ended up with 33' taped to mast & no 160. Electrical tape holding wire at each slip joint kept mast from lowering. 50 - 70 MPH did in the L. Figure if mast breaks, it breaks. L was way too much wire for this type mast.
9  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Good mobile CW paddles? on: January 10, 2013, 04:49:15 PM
I'm 99 % mobile & 99% mobile CW due to living in condo and personal tastes. Use whiterook MK-33 single lever paddle, more like a Kooti key. Fine by me, started with kooti back when. Leg strap MT - 36. MT-34 is Iambic. Cheaper then other options too. I mounted MT-33 to clip board that holds "steno" pad. Not much room in cabin of Subaru, works.http://www.electronicsusa.com/mk.html
10  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: 43 Foot Vertical and AH-4 Remote Tuner on: December 28, 2012, 07:12:39 AM
SRI for delay, just read thread. Control cable is un-shielded 16 or 18 gage 4 conductor that a friend had in garage. Like the knife switch idea.

Give it a go.

Katashi Nose KH6IJ did, if I remember correctly. Was in QST 40 / 45 years ago.
12  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: 43 Foot Vertical and AH-4 Remote Tuner on: December 12, 2012, 05:31:42 PM
Have used AH4 on home brew S9 type vertical, 125 ft from shack. No problem. Only have the one AH4, when set up portable must remove from mobile. The AH4 has tuned everything I have tried, random wire ,160 inverted L , couple of verticals, 40 & 80 dipoles feed with ladder line and with tuner mounted at center point of dipole on mast. My normal use is mobile feeding 5' mast with 40 mtr newtronics coil, use 40 -10.

You will be happy with that rig !
14  eHam Forums / Station Building / RE: Suggestions for mobile HF rig.... on: December 06, 2012, 04:56:09 PM
Look at the IC-7000 or used IC-506 series. Yeasu and Kenwood also have small rigs made for mobile ops. What I run now is an old IC-506 that I traded for last summer. Feeds a AH4 tuner and 40 meter newtronics coil and mast. Usable  40-10. Sweet for the size, not much room in a Subaru. The "big" rig is IC-718, reason, simplest menu operation. Went with all Icom but all any other brand allows easy interchange too. BTW live in condo, most ops are mobile or portable.
15  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Portable vs Mobile on: November 14, 2012, 12:36:13 PM
Nearly all my operations are either /M or /7 as home is a condo. / M is , even when parked you could drive with out stowing wire antenna, disconnecting 120 VAC etc. Only sign /7 (or what ever) if I am not in my home county. If on County Hunter freqs I don't sign /P as just confuses things for others. When /p in contest may or may not sign /P depends on contest. Worked CW SS from cabin in Skagit county WA. Didn't use /, if QSL I note on card. Back in the day had to use/ 7 etc. Also when operating out of your home QTH for more then few days had to notify FCC district engineer in that area. Was royal pain as I traveled on job.
