Have FT 897D W/CW filter, built in PS, tuner bolted to rig. Got this rig when moved to condo, only current production with built in PS. Does what it should, however not a good rig for me. Not being into computers and being old makes for uncomfortable operation. Found this old guy needed much simpler rig. Got IC 718 and took PS out of 897 for portable use.

I use a home brew knock off of S9 and what ever the /portable location allows for radials. AH4 tuner at base of ant. 80 -10. Today it is set up at cabin in state park for CW SS operation, 1 radial, needed to keep this one low profile. I and several other WWA ops have had good results with set up.

My take is "modern" car/trucks have cured some of old problems but introduced others ( that I had not considered). My Subaru Forester works but has incurable noise from fuel injectors. As have well over 100K on her will be replacing in next couple years. Final check will be putting small HF rig and mag mount on car and listening to what's there. At least will drive sales person nutz !

Been there, done that, not fun . Was 30 + years ago. Gut wrenching. Sold every thing but one old xcvr. Rigged end fed wire just for spite. Worked more DX & counties then any time since. I think radio helped me keep going. KC7YE

K7A @ Vintage Aircraft Fly In was a success, TNX to all who worked us. Set up FD style on flight line, new type of QRM, air plane noise. Good PR with visitors, museum & county airport honcho's . Plus we had a lot of fun.

Has been pointed out by another "7" that one of our phone calling freqs (7240) for K7A is used daily by a net. Look for us 3 + /- KHZ from listed freqs. As always listed calling freqs are + /- QRM , nets etc. Just a starting point. I'm a CW guy, looked at others listed calling freqs in QST & CQ and picked what looked like normal use by special event stations, most were eastern stations. Also didn't have the other operators on board when meeting the publication dead line for CQ & QST. Thats my story and I am sticking to it. 73 Jack KC7YE / K7A
