Hi John,
I have the same exact radio and power supply setup for my home base station. I really enjoy the setup, and it gets out very well. I have no regrets with my setup, and the nice thing is that you'll have a power supply that you can grow into.

Wane - KB7FSC
May I ask what antenna you went with ?

The truth is, I wouldn't buy either one of them. So I guess I'm not the one to advise you. And you know what else? Neither is anyone else unless that have the exact likes, and dislikes you have. The best way to learn which is the best one for you, is go to your nearest dealer, and play with both of them.
If you have just got to ask, then ask what folks don't like about the respective models. You get better answers that way.
Ok I'll bite , you said you wouldn't buy either one. Please due tell , what Don't you like about these two respective models ?

Try the FAQ area again. You should get to a page that says "eHam.net - Callsign / Username Change Request Form." It will show your old username and gives you a space to enter your new one. It may take a little time, but it will work.
Yes , that is the place I've tried , Thank you.

When buying a piece of ham equipment use the Eham Reviews section of this website. It will give you some idea of how the equipment you want to purchase is rated by other hams who have used the equipment for some time. Go to the power supply section of the reviews and look up the Astron RS35m or any other power supply you might be interested in, and see what the ham people who use it think of it.
Hope this helps, and congratulations and welcome to the ham community.

The Astron RS-35M is a great power supply. I had one for years and never had a problem with it. Plenty of room for the V-8000 and some amperage to spare should you add an HF rig later down the line. The V-8000 is a great little 2 meter rig. I also had one for a while and their solid as a rock. The cooling fan can get a little noisy if you run full power but other than that I never had any problems or dislikes with it.
Thanks , I looked up the Astron RS-35M it looks like it just might be the way to go. Would like to hear what others think of this model ?

eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Recommend a 2m or a 2m/70cm radio for a newbe

Congrats John on your ticket. I know you will enjoy it. I would recommend a good 2 meter radio to get you started, as 2M is the most used band in the VHF part of the spectrum. You could go with a dual band, but they are more expensive. Yeasu has a good 2M radio (FT-2900R) for a good price, around 170. It has a powerful transmitter, 75 watts. With that power and a good antenna which you can make yourself, you can get out quite far. If you are remotely building inclined, I have a pdf file of a plan for a small 2M beam that can be made from PVC pipe, and had a reported gain of 6-7 db. It is from QST magazine in 1993, but the theory of antenna holds true over time. I would be happy to share it with you. Couple that 75 watts into a beam with that gain and with low loss coax, you could have EPR over 200 W. You will also need a good strong power supply. So for little investment you could be on the air in no time. Feel free to email me at KF4IKI@yahoo.com if you want that pdf article about the beam. 73, Ed KF4IKI Email sent. Looking at the FT7900R ? Any suggestions on GOOD power supply ?
