16  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Why are radios lower power on AM and UHF on: September 13, 2012, 08:04:03 AM
Also more "taxing" and difficult in terms of design and components to generate 50W at 2m frequencies and 50W at 70cm frequencies.

Also, there are lots of loud things in military operations... having a headset to the ear is a lot better for understanding someone on the other side  Smiley
18  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Broadcast FM on Marine VHF on: September 13, 2012, 07:57:15 AM
Another ham thinks it could be a re-broadcast on something like a public access TV station. Channel 20 analog has its audio carrier at 161.750 MHz. I'm looking into it and seeing if that's the case.

Sorry for the spelling. iPhone...
20  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Broadcast FM on Marine VHF on: September 12, 2012, 04:19:16 PM
Update... The freq is actually 161.750 MHz. I hadn't tuned it in my FT-7900R lately and forgot it was actually the secondary freq. Also, a Markne VHF handheld we have at work also receives te broadcast.

I pick it up on my FT-7900R when I tune to the freq, as well as in my aircraft, which can receive Marine VHF. So, two different receivers.
22  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: What we all love about Ham Radio - add to the list! on: September 12, 2012, 09:35:28 AM
Experimentation and also the various digital modes that can do amazing things.
23  eHam Forums / Misc / Broadcast FM on Marine VHF on: September 12, 2012, 09:31:48 AM
This is an odd one. I routinely hear a local broadcast FM radio station (KWYE 101.1 based in Fresno) on marine VHF channel 23 (157.150). This is rather peculiar to me. Could it be IMD? I've never heard of a broadcast station transmitting on Marie VHF before...
24  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: Packet Radio sound files on: September 11, 2012, 07:56:17 PM
I do have that info, thank you very much. The reason I'm asking for the sound files is because I am looking to potentially code a native OSX app for packet. No such app exists and it is rather... annoying. I know it's a "dead" medium, but it'd be nice to have, if anything for me to learn something new.
25  eHam Forums / Digital / Packet Radio sound files on: September 09, 2012, 07:35:00 PM
Does anyone know of any VHF 1200 bps Packet Radio sound recordings that are also accompanied by documentation saying what exactly the bytes being sent are? I'd like to experiment with some software demodulation and I need a correct demodulation to compare it to. Thanks!
26  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / Twitter on: September 09, 2012, 03:52:52 PM
Anyone using Twitter in their Ham Radio pursuits? I just checked it out and #hamr and #hamradio are pretty active and sometimes have good info. I've noticed people using #dx for spots as well. Kind of cool.
27  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: Icom 706-MKIIG interface to MacBook laptop for use with Fldigi that works!!! on: September 07, 2012, 10:49:33 AM
Good deal!

I've been using my MacBook Pro with a Signalink USB and both my FT-450D and FT-817ND flawlessly with fldigi. I also have a USB-to-Serial adapter to control the rigs. Proof positive that Macs and Ham Radio go together  Smiley
28  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Buddipole Vertical on: September 05, 2012, 09:13:58 AM
Haha, very nice.  Smiley

I do only run 25-30W when operating digital on my FT-450D and yes, the balun does get fairly warm. That perplexed me when I first felt it and now it all makes sense.

Thank you again for the help, that was very educational, I learn something new in this hobby every day! I think I'll stick to dipole configurations with the Buddipole from here on out, at least on my property. I just don't have enough room in my yard for full sized radials, hence me experimenting with the short radials.

Thanks again!

30m band. I normally operate on 30m around 10.140 MHz doing digital modes.

Let me add that the balun is the selectable balun sold by buddipole.

And that's a detail I totally forgot to mention... I do have a 1:1 balun attached.
