46  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Coax loss 460-470mhz RG58 NMO mount on: March 26, 2012, 04:20:54 PM
CB has lots of myths, that's one of them.

I have seen this myth in action before, oddly, Not saying it is true, as in I don't believe it.
47  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Coax loss 460-470mhz RG58 NMO mount on: March 26, 2012, 02:57:34 PM
If RG58 is such a bad coax on UHF why is it the only NMO Mounts I can find still come with RG58.

Also if length is not a factor on mobile antennas, why do all mobile antenna mounts appear to come with 17ft of coax. I know the old urban myth of 17ft on the old CB antenna "don't touch that length it will affect its match", Then there is the argument that it does not affect it at all.
48  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: AF amplifier for exteral speaker? on: March 26, 2012, 12:23:59 PM
I have a class D mono amp at 700 watts rms at 4 ohms u can try haha jk, 3 watts sometimes just is not enough, /I have looked for small 35-50 watt mono amp for PA speaker for my boat. I have even thought of building one.

if you find one pass the info.

49  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: GMRS Antenna Build help on: March 23, 2012, 09:40:38 AM
Update, I purchased a Diamond SX-400 and it tested 1.3 across all channels. as high as 467 and as low as 462 at this # should I even attempt to lower it or leave it as is. I am excited to see it show this.  Grin

This proves that other meter was garbage.
50  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: GMRS Antenna Build help on: March 20, 2012, 01:57:11 PM
I got it down to a 1.3/4 on GMRS Repeater frequencies but it clims to 2.5 3 on the simplex frequencies. Hence why you see me question bandwidth on the other thread. I also noticed with my antenna it was very directional and sometimes would pick up better from the side on some frequencies.

Thank you all for your help at helping me understand.

well I believe the Elements are 3/8 tube
53  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: What is VSWR Bandwith on an Antenna on: March 20, 2012, 11:58:07 AM
do more elements close the bandwidth of an antenna, and does 1.5 VSWR mean it will only obtain a 1.5 and no better?

I have looked at a few commercial grade antennas and one of there specs is Antenna Bandwidth >1.5 VSWR  15

I am at loss of what this really means, Does this mean +-7.5mhz from your centered tuned frequency?

56  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Does anyone know what a "lid" is? on: March 19, 2012, 03:10:40 PM
Lid is slang for running a boot, or power amplifier

I thought they called those heaters or foot warmers not lids..
57  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: mobile rigs that can do CB freqs? on: March 18, 2012, 04:21:04 AM
Not to mention from what I have read, they sound awful on the AM compared to a an actual CB on modulation. Also most will only do 25 watts when they are modified to do AM on those frequencies. A good Cobra or Galaxy would be your best bet. I am looking at the Galaxy 959. I do wish the wattage was increased but it is what it is. Its bad people push more dirty power then they should. Imagine if 100 or 200 was allowed legally. It would make it worse. Most CBers just wanna key down and make noise. I feel bad for the ones who wish to use it for a good reason such as yourself.

58  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Welder's Magnetic Ground on: March 16, 2012, 01:40:44 PM
It is a large spring loaded contact, If you think about it in this way your NMO mount antennas use this same idea, Just a lot smaller, Also remember welders are using 30 to 300+ amps at around 28 volts or more.
59  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Discone Antenna on: March 16, 2012, 12:16:16 PM
I have the radio shack one as well, I must admit it does VERY well even when 10ft off the ground

60  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: PC progammable mobiles? on: March 16, 2012, 09:51:10 AM
If they made it that easy, they would have no control over there own radios, Also less money for them to be made.

My vertex is all pc programmable no VFO
