What about a FT-847 for HF/2/70cm base unit? It has the larger display as everyone is raving about.

Also try the 5/8 wave like I said, they are easy to build. In my ride home I hear a lot on 2m excluding 147.435
64  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Why do CB'ers hate ham operators so much? on: March 15, 2012, 12:14:35 PM
There is a very simple answer to this question. CB operators are challenged and intimidated by the technical complexity of amateur radio. Ham operators are typically very short with CB'ers after listening to a few minutes of total ignorance and determine that continuing the conversation is like trying to teach a pig to sing. CB'ers do not want rules or restrictions placed on them and quickly detrmine that all hams are pure a**holes. Unfortunately some of these poor souls have been challenged by the cryptic appearance of ham radio and made the plunge into amateur radio and brought their ignorant, filthy mouths and poor practices with them. The rest of the CB community is quite proud of splattering the entire spectrum with butchered amplifiers, having contests with one-another keying up their rig and playing music, or just showing the world that they have mastered stupidity with their never ending filthy language that would make a common street-walker blush. The topic should be, "Who really cares what CB'ers think of hams?"

I have listened to HAM repeaters and GMRS repeaters and ham has there fair share of people who sware, key down and play music, disregard rules and regulations, Or not care when a repeater operator says he will change the ctcss tone on his repeater to keep a person off and he then replies i will modify my ham radio then to get on here, This on a GMRS repeater. or 147.435 out here, Listen to that repeater. Sounds like the standard garbage you would find on your local CB station. The last two weeks I have heard more civil talks on CB.

I think the feud is the average ham has taken his time to earn his ticket and get away from the trash just to have someone who finds out hey i can run 1500 watts from the CB community and brings there hash/trash with them. CB'ers, I dont think I have ever talked to one who downplayed a Ham operator.

 Just my opinion

I built for a buddy a 2m 5/8 wave for dirt cheep using a few UHF connectors 1"pvc #12 copper wire for the loading coil and the whip off an old cb antenna. he had a 1.1 to 1.2 match, You could also use a chassis mount so-239 a plexiglass rod and bolt it to a flat tin sheet. This design was in the old 198x's ARRL book, also my 1994 Antenna book for a 5/8 wave antenna.

Ill see if I can get the instructions for you

I will keep the 857 in mind as well.
67  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: GMRS Antenna Build help on: March 15, 2012, 09:23:55 AM
The yagi is on hold for now till I can learn a little more. I built a simple 1/4 wave antenna i was able to get it to show around 1.3 on that 2m/70cm radio shack meter. but again how accurate is it in my frequency range is unknown because it shows 30 watts when the unit is a 45 watt unit. Unless i hurt the radio during all this trail stuff.
68  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Dare I ask, Who does CB alignment on: March 14, 2012, 03:49:46 PM
I have no equipment to do so, and I have no way to verify what this person says is true, this person could easily say this, no one else complained, I have had a few say they needed to adjust the clarifier and that's about it. Its not hacked I just wanna make sure everything is in working order,

How much would you charge if I shipped it.
69  eHam Forums / Elmers / Dare I ask, Who does CB alignment on: March 14, 2012, 12:16:05 PM
I have an older 148 GTL Love it to death, Someone a while back said I was a few kcs off freq and I would like to have someone go over it make sure everything is in perfect working order. It has never had any channel expansion done to it and I never plan on it, I just wish to make sure its in full specs.

Anyone capable of doing this or know of a shop i can send it to?

I do live in the desert area of California and we get temps above 107 in the summer. but if its in my truck or house it would be in the nice cool AC  Grin

If I do find i enjoy working the HF I would gladly get a FT-450 or a TS-480 for the future,

I also don't have a thing for small units, something about radios in a small package.

I have heard good things about kenwood. I am not sure where or what band i want to work as it will all be new to me. Hf is great but large antennas but exciting to make long distance contacts but better in the day for big skip. VHF UHF great all day and night with local repeaters and talking to locals and making new friends. Its one reason I looked at the all in one kinda package for now to see where or what I will enjoy. I work days so day skip would be hard unless I talked the boss into an antenna on the roof.  Grin

I am also excited to know I can help in the case of an emergency if needed and having the 897 would be great. I do have a family member in the desert that has some land and setting up a nice large hf antenna is possible but not at home.

There are a few things that caught my eye on it, the bands it will work on plus the 2m and 70cm. Resale value, they appear to have a good resale value so if I ever do upgrade. This may sound stupid to others but it is very eye appealing to me. I see the 857 but i do not like the look of it. I actually like the physical size of the 897 being larger. One day i would like to get a dedicated base unit but i also don't like the idea of clutter but that Im sure will change as i get deeper into the hobby.

What are your opinions.

Is it a bad unit?
75  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: Why are some ham's ensitive about mods on: March 12, 2012, 04:48:30 PM
The more in depth I wonder about modding and free banding of some radios, Sure you can free band some or extend there transmit range, but the second question as to it being illegal is what does this do to your finals. My guess would be that they still have there own frequency range and going beyond it could hurt them.

On another hand I can see where a free-band or extended transmit could come in handy during a time of need. being able to communicate with law enforcement. The only trouble is is the one who did the mod responsible enough with the new power he has acquired or will he key up and tell a cop to shove it.
