16  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / SWR problem with antenna on: January 26, 2013, 10:53:13 PM
I have a vertical Moxon antenna(homebrew) that worked perfectly 1:1 at 10 feet above the ground to bottom of antenna 23 to top , I raised the antenna to twenty feet to bottom and and my SWR changed from 1:1 to 1.3:1 and I started getting RF in the shack. I am assuming that I need a Balun or ferrite beads on the coax. Another oddity is that the SWR direct through my tuner is 1.2:1 when I go through the tuner it goes to 1.3:1 at it's best I cannot tune it to anything better than that.
Assuming snap on ferrite beads are needed where should I put them? at the coax connection of the driven elements or on the coax , below the antenna. The coax travels horizontally from the driven element to the mast then down vertically.

Thanks
George
17  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: distance between feed points of antenna on: January 11, 2013, 10:34:36 PM
I am using this on 10 & 12 meters only, I think I will take your advise and make a 1 inch gap. I think the old saying goes a ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Cheers

18  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / distance between feed points of antenna on: January 11, 2013, 09:47:36 PM
This is probably a dumb question but I have to ask. What is the minimum distance (air space) between the feed of the two elements of a dipole or other balanced antenna?  would a 1/2 inch be sufficient at 1kw
Thanks
George
19  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Vertical Moxon feedline questions on: January 07, 2013, 09:43:02 PM
I built a vertical moxon for 10 meters and it works pretty well, I used a 1:1 balun at the feed point brought the coax directly towards the reflector then down the mast to my station. I haven't had any problems yet<GRIN> my balun is only rated at 200 watts and i wanted to run 400 watts, so I was thinkin about making a direct connection at the feed point and adding some snap on ferrite beads on the coax. Now the real question would I be better off to run the coax directly towards the reflector past the reflector before dropping down to the station rather than dropping down the mast in between the driven element and the reflector??

I have read alot about end feeding the driven element what are the disadvantages??

Always trying to build a better antenna

20  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Moxon, Yagi, Tak antenna on: December 10, 2012, 08:41:02 PM
If I understand you correctly?? because the two driven elements start getting close at the ends that cancels out the radiation in the middle of the elements??  Just like everyone else I am trying to get a directional antenna that has massive gain and fits in a shoebox<GRIN> Any Suggestions??
Thanks
George

I was checking out Moxon antenna design which is sort of like a horizontally bent yagi and wondered if anyone has tried bending the yagi into a quad configuration?? I could then build one with wire using the same structural design as the TAK Antenna? I drew a picture showing the driven elements and the reflector. http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/966/mixedupyagi.jpg
Thanks

22  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: New Amplifier interferes with Computer and TV on: October 13, 2012, 09:09:09 PM
Thanks for all the Help
Moved my amp to the other side of the desk (away from the computer) and cut power out a few watts and everything is just fine.
Heck it's even easier to tune in the new location
Thanks

23  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / New Amplifier interferes with Computer and TV on: October 06, 2012, 10:38:53 PM
I just got my new amp up and working but when I transmit on 10 meters it knocks the connection from my radio to my computer (ham radio deluxe)
I am getting a little feedback in my speakers... the amp a Dentron 1000 which has the 10 meter upgrade??
when I transmit on 80 meters and 10 meters the TV dish looses it's signal (Mine) I am afraid to ask the neighbors about theirs. The end of my antenna is only 6 feet from the dish. I am running 500 watts out max using a parallel dipole antenna
any suggestion would be appreciated this is my first amp
Thanks
George

Thanks for the Help!!
I found the problem a loose ground wire. new nut on the stud and working better than ever

25  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / Dentron 1000 No current on: October 04, 2012, 11:09:09 PM
Fired up my new Dentron 1000 amp I bought and everything worked well for about 20 minutes.  I attempted to tune the amp on 20 meters and had the load set at 1 instead of 5 were the manual says to start, I heard a odd sound and immediately unkeyed (1 or 2 seconds) after that the amp will not transmit. I have aprox 900 volts (Same) But absolutely no current.(had aprox 400ma before) The transmit light comes on, however I remember a relay sound that I don't hear now.
Any advice were to start would be appreciated
Thanks

I just re-read the specs on the two tuners and realized that the 986 has 1 adj capacitor the 989D has two. I assume that makes it more precise???
28  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / MFJ 986 vs MFJ 989D on: October 02, 2012, 09:39:32 PM
What is the better tuner between the MFJ 986 and MFJ 989D?
The 986 is a differential "T" tuner the 989 is a "T" tuner what exactly does that mean?
Looking to buy a 1000 watt tuner these seem to be in my price range, any suggestions or comments?
Thanks
George
29  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Dipole choices - I thought I new what I wanted but..... on: September 23, 2012, 05:37:46 PM
I just wanted to give my 2cents, I installed a parallel dipole from Alpha Delta and have had very good luck with it, resident from 10 - 80, 80 uses loading coils and a tuner helps with 80 meters. The antenna is only 80 feet long and not very intrusive, here is the link http://www.alphadeltacom.com/pdf/prices_antennas-3.pdf
Good Luck 73's

30  eHam Forums / Amplifiers / RE: Getting started with new amp on: August 29, 2012, 08:12:00 PM
I figure a keying relay would be a good investment, I have to buy the cable anyway so the relay is pretty cheap investment this way I can run any amp. I checked out the SWR without the tuner it's 1.3:1 or less on 40, 20 and 10 meters the rest are about 3:1 So I think I would be safe on the resonant bands running without a tuner. Am I forgetting something??
