1  eHam Forums / Station Building / RE: Station Upgrade on: November 02, 2012, 07:37:29 PM
The Ham Station is actually in Evansville, IN.  I will agree that they are great to deal with.  I have bought a few rigs from them myself.

Zone 2 was well represented in the contest.  In addition to VC2X, I also worked VE2IM and VE2DXY in Zone 2.  Also caught VE2IM  before the contest on 12m for a new zone on that band.

3  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: CY0 Sable Island DXpedition QRT on: October 29, 2012, 10:42:10 AM
Did get them on 12m SSB, which was the only band other than 160 I needed them on. Even have Sable confirmed on 6m from 2008!

Hope they have a safe trip home.

I need it on CW.  Have PY0S on 20 RTTY and 17 SSB, so could use a few band fills as well.

I thought the equipment manufactures arranged for the extended solar minimum we had for the same reason.

I agree with the previous posts that the automatic W3LPL spots remove any chance of finding a rare one calling CQ or working a couple of QSO without a piluep, because it finds them and immediately the pileup is there.  Guess I need to run more RTTY or (heaven forbid) SSB!

7  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: What was your best DX catch? on: October 25, 2012, 04:33:58 PM
One of my most exciting recently was catching BY5CD on 40 CW in last years CQWW contest.  For some reason, working China on 40m really made me feel like a big gun DXer.  Wasn't even a new band zone as I already had Taiwan confirmed on 40.  ALso heard a 9M6 that morning on 40 but he couldn't hear me.

Another exciting one was working Juan De Nova back in 1989 or so on 20 SSB one late night. Didn't realize at the time how rare it was.  Glad to have it on the wall, haven't worked it since.

Working NF6S/KP1 from my apartment in grad school using a Heathkit SB102 and an indoor dipole was sure a stoke of luck.  Didn't have KP1 confirmed yet at it took another 16 years after that to finally get my 6Y5NR/KP1 QSL-worked with a Yaesu FT101B and a vertical on 15m when I was in high school.

Face it, any DX is exciting and a great catch!

8  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: What were the 10 biggest DX surprise activations for you? on: October 25, 2012, 03:09:33 PM
Back in 1999 or so I was tuning around on 15 CW and heard a CW, it was 5A1A who really surprised me since I didn't know Libya was active then. Didn't work it that time, but did get 5A1A eventually on 20, 15 and 10m.

I agree that the 7O6T was a surprise since we only had a few days notice before they hit the airways.

In this day of the internet and email, do you think we will ever have a complete surprise DXpedition again to an uninhabited area?  One where there is no advanced notice, they just get on and hit the airways.

Chris,

heard you on 10m this morning.  Gave you a call but you were working Europeans.  Always nice to QSO with someone you see posting on eham all of the time.  Hope we can do it soon. After those antenna stories I sure feel like a little pistol.  Icom 706 original at 100 watts to a homebrew G5RV.  Did work country 181 for the 2012 marathon today though-AH0/N0AT on 15 CW. Took 2 calls or so.

10  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Pwer supply fpr Kenwood 590S on: October 17, 2012, 09:16:16 PM
Voltage and currentwise it would work, but the PS125 doesn't have terminals on it, only a power cord terminated in a 6 pin Molex plug for the radio. If the TS590 uses the 4 pin connector on the power cord like many of the newer rigs do, you would need an adaptor.

I worked 3B9C back in 2004 on 40-15m, including RTTY. Still need 3B9 confirmed on 12 and 10m.  Worked 3B9FR on both of those bands, but haven't got a QSL from him yet-sent him a couple direct ones.  He used to be on quite a bit, now I never see him spotted. Wonder if he is ok?

8N1OGA put on a decent DXpedition to JD1/O about 10 years ago.  My guess is that they were running some power with gain antennas, given the strength of their signals.

13  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: DXCC Sleuth ==> FT/G - Glorioso (Iiles Glorieuses) on: October 14, 2012, 06:23:26 PM
I need it also for an all time new one. I worked Tromelin very easily in 2000 with a dipole, so Glorioso shouldn't be that tough. Also have Juan de Nova worked, I don't think that one has been on that recently either.

Got them on 15 SSB as well today around 2200Z.  Not really loud but good enough and they seem to hear well. Took around 10 minutes of calling to be in the log.  That was a new 15m country, and a new SSB country, although I never applied for a phone DXCC.  Sure would like to get them on RTTY or another band or 2.  Have TT8ZZ confirmed on 12 and 10 from 2002.

Couldn't hear the 5U today even though lots of east and mideast coast guys were spotting them. Glad I didn't need 5U on RTTY or 20m.  Did get TT8TT fairly easily today on 15m SSB.  That was a new band and mode country.  Really haven't heard them very well at all so far.
