1  eHam Forums / CW / RE: Question for ex Navy/Merchant Marine R/Os on: May 19, 2013, 04:20:41 PM
Nope, never heard of them being used.  Used to handle "Pan Medico" traffic at Portishead from deep sea ships, not a great feeling when you know they are many days away from port.

Used to ring Plymouth Hospital for the medico advise.

If you got one, you were expected to stick with it and see it through to the end.

Long time ago now.
2  eHam Forums / Station Building / Multiple keying/headphone/rf lines on: May 18, 2013, 01:31:58 PM
Its becoming a bit of nightmare here.

Have Drake B line  C Line  Tr4/Rv4   Ts530  all sat on a desk.

Cannot get behind the desk.

Am thinking of bringing all the headphone/keying lines out to a mini patch panel that I can just plug they key and phones into for the rig I want to use.

The Rf switching can be taken care of by a coax switch.

Any problems I am going to run into?  or is there a better way of doing it.  Thanks

Try some of this, there is a similar product in NZ that is used to stop birds roosting in sheds.

http://www.hotfoot.com/gel-pd.html

I have not tried it, we use other methods to control the hundreds of sparrows that try and get a free feed.

4  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Using 80M GP to support 80M dipole. on: April 24, 2013, 12:24:14 PM
Thanks all, I had thought it was a bad idea, but rather than rule it out, thought I would ask.  Will be trying to get a line over some trees today, that will be the home of the 80m Inv V I hope.  Its going to be a bit of effort to get the GP so dont want to mess it up.
5  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Using 80M GP to support 80M dipole. on: April 24, 2013, 02:52:31 AM
If I put a pulley at the top of my 70ft 80m vertical and use it to support the centre of a 80m inverted v is this going to cause any issues with the performance of the GP?

Just thought it would be nice to have the centre of Inv V up nice and high?

Would probably use open wire line all the way to the shack.

Thanks
6  eHam Forums / Boat Anchors / RE: Anyone else in the same boat? (anchor).... on: April 22, 2013, 05:53:42 PM
I love my BA's have Drake B & C line TS530 and Collins 75A4, the A4 needs recaping and a new dial scale.

Now a question, it often amazes me how people have a new XYZ73Mark5A DSP transceiver that costs several k and a bgd linear that cost another 2 or 3 K all running into a vertical.  I know that is all that some people can put up.

But I wonder which puts out the better signal a 530 plus TL922 say and a decent tower and 3 or 4 ele beam, for probably not an awful lot of dough, or the above mentioned all singing dancing coffee making wonder machine.
7  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: 75ft vertical and outrigger wires. on: April 11, 2013, 08:21:41 AM
Only really two bands 160 and 80, intend doing something different for 40.  Am going the fat dipole way, so that will a) lower the resonant freq and b) make it broader to tune.  Thanks
8  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Clark pneumatic masts on: April 10, 2013, 08:26:13 PM
I have seen pictures of people using a 60 or 80ft versatower on a trailer with outrigger feet to get round council regulations.
9  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Radials required for by sea water use on: April 10, 2013, 06:33:58 PM
We used to use a large as possible copper plate on the bottom of a boat, so it is s similar situation.  A good size 1 x 1 metre copper plate into sea water should provide a good earth, I would back that up with 4 radials and see how it goes.    Used to use the liners out of hot water cylinders for the copper plate, do not know if hot water cylinders still have the copper centre?
10  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: 75ft vertical and outrigger wires. on: April 10, 2013, 06:08:23 PM
That's a serious antenna. Can you post some pics when you reach the finish line?
Will do for sure, it all started when I bought a load of 3" ali pipe as special offer, then what do I do with it.  :-)
11  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / 75ft vertical and outrigger wires. on: April 10, 2013, 03:35:12 PM
I am in the final process of finishing off my new vertical for the winter.  It will be 70 - 75ft high.  I am going to put 4 (could be more)  wires around the tube with an outrigger at 25-30ft to give it more strength.  Now the question...  which should be the radiator, the tube or the outrigger wires, or both.  Was thinking of connecting the wires to the tube at the top, and then that would allow me to feed it like a half folded dipole against a ground mat, or should I bond the whole lot together. and feed it as a fat vertical against ground mat.   Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
12  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: QRM from Video card on: April 06, 2013, 12:13:49 PM
Will try another display over that side of the room.  One side is the office and the other side is radio.  It was a freebie PC and ACER LED display, so its a no cost setup.  Am going to try and find my power line filter today and put that into the monitor lead.

Sort of retribution isn't it reverse TVI.
13  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / QRM from Video card on: April 06, 2013, 01:04:55 AM
Just got my first dedicated radio pc, the video card produces a heap of hash on many of the HF bands.  Have reduced it a bit by winding many turns round some ferrite rods, but there is still a continual set of noises at about 18khz intervals, frankly its driving me nuts.

As I change the resolution its gets worse as it goes higher, so down to lower res 800 x 600 and 16 colours, and its passable just, but still thee on most bands.

Any ideas please.

No pencil and paper does not count.   Thanks
14  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Rebuilt Rotators & who sells on: April 01, 2013, 01:57:52 PM
Has anyone had any experience of the rebuilt rotators that a couple of firms sell?  am thinking of getting a couple of Ham 1V and if I can save a $100 a unit it all helps.

Who in your opinion is the best firm to buy through?  thanks.

I do realise they will be 110v, but have enough 110 v gear to need a dedicated transformer to drive it all.
15  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Easter Island XR0YG on: March 26, 2013, 02:07:26 AM
