Does anyone have any first-hand knowledge of this antenna, and an opinion of how it worked for you?

2  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Gap Titan DX On a Metal Roof? on: November 12, 2012, 10:58:01 AM
Good advice re: guying...I go overboard on such things (I'm told) -- I currently have my home-brewed fan-dipole on a 30-foot mast made of 1-inch water pipe and it has six guy ropes: 3 at 20-foot mark and 3 at the top, and it is attached via 18-inch long standoff to the side of my patio (4"x 6" frame) and the base is bolted to a concrete footer with four 18-inch pieces of all-thread.  Water pipe is not a good choice for something like this, but with all the guy ropes it doesn't move much at all in the wind. Will put guy ropes on the Titan DX as well.

Called the Gap company in Florida, @ 772-571-9922, and spoke to Chris who said that if I mount the Gap Titan DX at four to five feet above the metal roof it (the antenna) will not "see" the metal roof and so will not interact with it.  So some time this week that will be my next project.

5  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Gap Titan DX On a Metal Roof? on: November 11, 2012, 08:55:39 PM
I have a 35' x 15' flat aluminum roof (wood-framed) over the end of my drive way, at approx. 18 feet high (was designed to shade motor-home, think "over-sized carport")...concrete pad below and supported by 10 x 3-inch diameter iron pipes (five on each side).  It was suggested to me that I try mounting my new Titan DX right on top of the metal roof, because the metal roof would work with the antenna rather than against it. But I've read elsewhere that being near metal structures, fences, etc. causes problems with the Titan DX?

The only other place I could mount it would be on the roof of my mobile home (asphalt shingle roof), but it would be within 20-30 feet of the same metal roof...which was why I was advised to try mounting it on the metal roof itself...the thought being that instead of fighting the influence of the nearby metal roof I would be using it to help the antenna.  Am I being given sound advice?

Also, if mounting the Titan DX on the metal roof is OK, how critical would it be that the antenna is centered on the roof...if it were mounted on one of the long sides would it cause it to be directional?  Since the metal roof is a long rectangle at approx. 2:1 would it not still be directional in the two long directions if centered (hope I worded that correctly)?

OK, thank you...I will sign as "portable" any time I go to the hill top area...that's the only time I'd be using the radios other than at home.

7  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: FYI: Ever wonder how well a 12V ATV winch would work to crank up tower? on: November 10, 2012, 05:44:56 PM
Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but along the same topic:  What about the winches that are sold to be mounted on the front of a vehicle...I have a Jeep and was considering a winch for it, in case I get myself stuck while out in the countryside...if I have a winch strong enough to pull my Jeep out of a ditch would a winch like that work to raise/lower a ham tower? Could park the vehicle close to the base of the tower when it needs to be lowered/raised?  Once the antenna is up, unless something unplanned happens I would think it would only need to be raised/lowered once or twice per year for a check-up/maintenance?  (But I've only been licensed since August, so probably don't know what I'm talking about).

Thank you for the replies and information...it's exactly what I needed to know...I mostly wanted to make sure that if someone made a contact with me they did not get the credit denied because I did not ID my station correctly since I'd not be transmitting from "home".  But the Grid, County, State and Country will be the same.

I will make additional locations in the tQSL...that will keep everything organised properly.

Yes, I will be very low power...the first try will be with a Yaesu FT-817 and a Buddipole antenna kit...I also bought the 80-meter version of the "horse-fence antenna" from this site http://kf4bwg.com/  which I have not tried yet, but will be taking it with me to try out.  Depending on how things work out I may try taking my FT-450D up there at a later date, with the same two antennas.  It will be a gain of approx. 2000 feet in elevation, so we'll see what happens.  If nothing else it will be a nice way to spend time outside.

Thank you all for your time and assistance;

I'm putting together a radio set-up I can take up to some local mountains, and want to know how I would need to modify my call-sign.  I would be approx. 25 miles from my house.  And how would I indicate this new location when sending logs to LoTW...would I need to get a new Certificate for that location? I would not be operating from a vehicle, but a fixed position.

Also, when stations are collecting grid Squares for awards, are they only using the first 2 letters/numbers...for example at my home UTH I am at DM43ej...when I go to the "mountain-top" location I will be at DM43jl or DM43il...will those collecting grid squares care, or still consider it just DM43?

10  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: LoTW Queued For Processing Question on: November 09, 2012, 10:37:31 AM
Thank you for replies...is the 40-plus hours of queued logs the norm, or because it has been busted for the passed few days?
11  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Questions about QSL Cards on: November 09, 2012, 10:35:30 AM
My apologies for jumping into this thread, but my question is closely related...in OP's post he asks about sending "Green Stamps"...Green Stamps refers to US Dollars, correct?  I ask because I sometimes see QRZ pages on which the station asks for "Green Stamps" and others say $2.00 so I wanted to make sure I was understanding correctly?

12  eHam Forums / DXing / LoTW Queued For Processing Question on: November 09, 2012, 10:25:23 AM
I submitted my first log to LoTW this morning, approx 3 minutes ago (first time user)...after signing in, locating the proper log on my computer and submitting it, I got a message saying the log was queued for processing.  While logging in I'd seen a message saying the system had approx 43 hours worth of logs queued already...my question:

Do I have to keep my computer turned on and connected to the LoTW site until it finally pulls the log from my computer, or has it already been uploaded to them and I can now disconnect?  (I don't get along well with computers and know little about how all that uploading/downloading, etc. works...sorry)

Thank you for the replies and information.  Yes, even if a contact doesn't count towards anything at all, they are all good in my book.

15  eHam Forums / DXing / Maritime Mobile Station Question? on: November 07, 2012, 05:11:42 PM
I've a question regarding a "Maritime Mobile" contact I made late this afternoon...at 2347 UTC I worked N1ZZZ/MM on 28.405, who said he was currently, at that time, in North Pacific, in Grid BM14.  What country does a contact like that count for...the home location of the ham broadcasting from the ship, or the country closest to where he's broadcasting from?  And how would the location be verified, if for instance the ship were going across the ocean over a period of time?

I know it's nothing to get overly excited about, nothing rare, etc., but I just got my Tech. Lic. in August, so most contacts I make outside of AZ is a first for me, and I get excited  Roll Eyes...  So I was wondering how this contact will count in my list of locations worked when I get it sent to LoTW?

Thank you for your time and assistance;
