1  eHam Forums / Station Building / RE: Rigs with good noise blankers on: March 13, 2013, 11:53:36 AM

I finally have radios that handle my very irritating noise here.  The best blanker I have ever found, by far, is my Drake TR-7.

Next best is almost a tie with Ten-Tec OMNI V and ICOM 746PRO.  I have used many rigs, old and new, these work best for me.

 Good luck,

 Ed WA4NJY

Hi Ed,

That is interesting. I had a 746 original and didn't think the NB did much on it at all. Maybe they fixed it in the PRO.  I had forgotten about Ten TEc. I hear that some of their NBs are very good.

Vlad gave me a new one on 40m the other night-a new zone on 40 as well!  Who would have thought that I would have zone 34 worked on 80m before 40 (5A7A on 80)?  Last year he gave me SU as new mode countries on RTTY and SSB.  Still hoping to catch him on 17 or 12 soon before I paypal off for the card.

To top it off, the other day got QSLs from his Pacific trip back in 2004.  V63 was a new CW and 20m country, YJ was a new 30m country, and ZK2 was a new 40m country.  He has sure made me happy in the past week!

3  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Horizontal loop question on: February 21, 2013, 11:28:54 AM
I remember seeing an article in QST back in the 80s where I first learned about the horizontal loop antenna for HF.  Since then, I have seen many people discuss them or say they use them, and both hams and QST say they are good DX antennas.  However, I have never seen it mentioned as to the required height above ground to be a good DX antena.  So, how high (in terms of wavelengths) does a horizontal loop need to be to function as a good antenna for DX?

Glad I have S0 confirmed on 20 SSB, as well as 20 PSK and 30m CW (shameless plug for myself).  There haven't been any recent DXpeditions to Western Sahara that I know of.  All the stuff I worked was 2003 or before.  Any ideas why the lack of recent DXpeditions?

Finally got them on 20 CW tonight.  The pileup didn't seem too bad. That gives me a new band country, as I have 9U on both SSB and CW but only on 10m.  Tried for them on 12 the other day with no luck. Never did get 5X8C.  Only copied them one time on 20m RTTY.  That was a bummer. Hope I have better luck with the XT, still them them on RTTY and on 30m and below.

Really need to get a rotor and get the MA5B yagi I recently bought up.

6  eHam Forums / Contesting / RE: Did you work 4U1GSC in DX Contest? on: February 18, 2013, 07:16:16 PM
They count for Italy, just like 4U1WB counts for the US and 4U1VIC counts for Austria (except in CQ contests).  Didn't work them in the contest, but did get them the week before.

According to the QST review, the 857 draws 16A at full output.

but then again, just being able to DX at all makes me a happy camper.

That is so true!  Sometimes in the DX hunt and count it is easy to lose sight of the magic of radio, and being able to span the globe with a piece of wire and a few watts (few being relative).  I hope I never fail to get at least a little excited at hearing my call come back from halfway around the world, or even halfway across the city.

40 was in pretty good shape both days.  Nice bunch of JA QSOs with Siberia thrown in on Saturday morning, good opening to EU the last 90 minutes of the contest as well.

Didn't get anything new in the contest, including no new band or mode countries.  Tried for 9U4U on 12m yesterday afternoon, no luck.  Did work T46RRC tonight on 160m. Really surprised he heard my signal considering my lousy antenna.  That was a new one on top band!  Probably up to 16 countries or so on 160.  Did work them earlier on 40m for a new IOTA.

Jetstream makes a 28 amp supply I have that isn't much bigger than the MFJ one. Still small and lightweight.  I would check the QST review on the FT857D.  It will tell exactly how much current it consumes at full power. I am guessing it is less than 22 amps. Probably more like 17 to 18 or so.

11  eHam Forums / Satellites / RE: So where does the satellite hobby stand now? on: February 12, 2013, 07:28:13 PM
Is VO52 still up and going strong? That is a great linear sat, but unfortunately it seems that most NA satellite hams don't take advantage of it.  AO7 can still be a lot of fun, though.

HA0NAR has given me 6W on all 3 WARC bands in the past couple of days for 3 new band countries!  I don't think Senegal has been authorized to use the WARC bands for very long.  Now to get the 5X, 9U and XT for some new band and RTTY countries.

If you are tired of Africa, it looks like there are quite a few Pacific DXpeditions coming up in the next few months.  I already have the pacific closed out for countries, but still need 6O on the continent of Africa, plus quite a few of the Islands, including ZD9, 3C0, ZS8, 3Y0B, VK0H, FR/G, and all of the FT5s.

A used Kenwood TS850 would be my first choice, or a Kenwood TS930. If you want one that covers 6m as well, then an Icom 736 or Kenwood TS690.

Don't give up because of hearing loss.  There is always RTTY and other digital modes.  I plan to have some fun this weekend in the CQ WPX RTTY contest.

Could it be Vlad-UA4WHX?
