46  eHam Forums / CW / RE: The Best CW Transceiver? on: December 16, 2012, 08:10:25 PM
Ten-Tec just came out with the Argonaut VI.
http://www.tentec.com/products/Argonaut-VI-QRP-1%252d10-Watt-Transceiver.html
Less than $1000 new and there is a new related linear amplifier as well.

Don't get one if you are a 12m fan.  How could they leave that band off it?

Not always.  A couple of years ago I found a Yaesu FT920 on ebay from an estate sale.  It had the FM board, an external speaker, and a desk mic.  There were a few scratches on it, but it worked fine. The Buy It Now price was $220.  Couldn't hit the button quick enough on that one!

You can buy foreign stamps to put in a SASE to the DX.  Bill Plum sells them.  See the  reviews of his service here on eham.net

That whole setup is worth maybe $700 if everything worked correctly
50  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Any Station Changes Planned for 2013? on: December 12, 2012, 12:33:39 PM
Hope to get a small beam up again. Found a MA5B at a good price, now need to find a rotor at an equally good price.  Might try to get a rig with UHF and a beam up again to play on the satellites again also.

Got SV5BYR confirmed today for a new band country on 15, 12, and 10, so he is a good QSLer. Have to go direct, though.

2 ATNO here in 2012-7O and E4, which is better than most recent years-other than getting "newly created countries" like the 4 PJs in 2010.  7O and E4 have both been aruond for a while.

Did get quite a few new band countries, like 5T and ZL9 for 30m, TT on 15m, D2 on 17 and 20m, and lots of new stuff on 12m and RTTY.

Lets hope 2013 is even more productive-but we will see.

SV5TS was one of the first entities I really made a plan to work.  I noticed he came on 20m SSB around the same time and frequency every evening, so started planning my evenings around being on 20m at that time.  Finally paid off after a few weeks.  That was in 2000.  Mike, SV5BYR is very active now and has given me a new band country on several of the higher bands.

Back in the mid 80s I worked a J49 station and it took me a while to realize that it was Crete and not just Greece.  The 9 in the district position finally opened up my eyes on that one so I sent off for a QSL. I think it was Balder DJ6SI operating from Crete.

and in my stupidity as a young dxer, I pu pu-ed SV5TS as being for Greece and not the Dodecanese Islands...Ya snooze, ya lose!.....

I hope you haven't passed up on SV2ASP CQing with no callers because you thought it was "Just Greece"

A few years ago I was able to get 6Y5NR/KP1 confirmed from a 1985 QSO.  Found a few other operators listed on the QSL on the QSL gallery, and contacted them.  One of them had the logs and a few old QSLs so we got it worked out that way.

Good luck, wish I had a few more Wake Is. QSO-have only 1, on 20m SSB.

You have  SSB filters of identical width. I would guess the additional one is in the transmit chain.  Yaesu did that also with the FT847

Hi Jim,

Happy birthday to you also!  I made it to 46, yeah!  Your initials are almost like mine also. Mine are JFG!

If the post office is broke, why in the heck did they ever come out with forever stamps?  Don't they realize they are losing money with them?  I buy some for 45 cents and use them when postage goes to 46 cents.  They are losing a cent a letter then.  No wonder our country is so broke, those in charge have no economic common sense.

Sunspot number is currently 29, that is horrible for this part of the solar cycle.  Never expected the 10 meter contest to be this poor 6 months away from the predicted solar peak.  Today is my birthday!  Found lots of other ways to celebrate it-took a couple of nice bike rides, etc.

Did work CE, HK, PY, PJ2, KH6 and heard D4 on, but no luck with Cape Verde yet.  Worked several Mexican states also.  Tomorrow is another day.

How would the same rotor handle the Mosley Mini 32A?  It weighs 9.5 pounds and has a windloading of 2.5 square feet?
