61  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: But....... I dont WANT to wait another YEAR for an ATNO!! on: December 07, 2012, 02:33:07 PM
I want to go while working a new one!  Hopefully number 340 on the current list!

I was going to buy one on-line to today to use with a Russian QSL manager for a 5B4 station I worked on 30m (new band country).  The USPS wanted $1.45 for shipping?  This would fit in a regular envelope!  I guess I will head to the post office on Monday instead and hopefully find Dennis as he is the only one there who knows what they are-and he is a Northern Illinois University Grad like myself!

Who would have thought my Alma Mater would be in the Orange Bowl!  GO Huskies!

And show me one single expedition that favours EU,  they all want the $'s that comes with working NA and the west coast especially.

TO4E, the recent FR/G expedition, most of the 6O operations.

Of course who saw 7O coming this year?  That was definitely one ATNO I didn't figure on getting in 2012. Didn't really plan on getting E4 either-thanks Vlad!  I think before 2013 is over there will be a few nice DXpeditions that will surprise us.  At least I hope so.  Would someone please go to the South Sandwich Islands for a month, so I can finish off the Western Hemisphere!

Best case - someone will go activate one of these:

3Y0/B, E3, FR/G, FR/T, FT5Z, KH5K, KP1, VP8/S

VP8S and FR/T are both due for activations.  I think it has been over 10 years since both were activated.  Need FR/T on CW (have it on SSB and RTTY) and VP8S on anything.  Don't think KH5K is going to happen soon but then you never know . Same for KP1.

The Heard Island DXpedition of 2014 will be an ATNO for me if I work them, so now is the time to start the hardware planning. For those of you in the know, what is the minimum antenna that will probably get through from the central US?  I figure the pileups will be unbreakable the first week, but hopefully they will thin out some as the DXpedition goes on.  I am figuring that the best bet bandwise would be probably 30, 20, or 17m.  Would a low dipole get through, or is a beam definitely required?  I would be running barefoot-most likely 100 watts. Don't see having a 200 watt rig by then but then you never know.

A dipole at 20 feet isn't going to cut it and on top of it all he has huge geographic problems.

Maybe, maybe not. I worked them yesterday AM on 30m using a similar antenna.  Mine is at 25 feet, though. Those extra 5 feet must make all the difference HI HI. I have worked 280 countries or more with that antenna and 100 watts. Takes some patience but it can be done.  Was using the same antenna when I worked ZL9CI on 20m CW in 1999.  Any antenna beats being QRT, and sometimes it is fun to do things you aren't supposed to be able to do.

Unless the 718 has a narrow filter in it that the 706MKII doesn't, it won't do anything additional to fight QRM. The DSP in the lower level Icom's is nothing to write home about.  It won't make an uncopyable signal into one that you could copy. Also, the 706MKII has the RIT on its own knob. I have a 706 original and would definitely take it over a 718, if nothing else because it has 6m and 2m on it.

What makes the 718 a nicer contesting rig than the 706?

5X and 9U will also be on in early 2013.  Have 9U worked on both SSB and CW on 10m only, so hope to get quite a few band fills.  Have 5X on a 20 and 15 but would like them on a few more also.  Need both on RTTY.

Got them on 30m this AM for a new band country!  Worked them around 1400Z and they had a good signal.  First time I have heard them very well and I am just using a low dipole.  The op wasn't working people too quickly, but the pileup wasn't too bad either, definitely better than the pileups for PT0S were.  I would have thought that ZL9 would be rarer than PY0S.

Now to get them and the 5T (who I worked last night on 30m for a new band country) on RTTY for 2 new mode countries.  Sure hope the solar flux improves for the 10m contest or it could be a long weekend.

OK, I just have it on a mast on a roof tripod.  Will it work ok on that?

It took me about that long to get my KP1 QSL for a 15m QSO in 1985.

Hey, its a new band!  Let's hope we get it.  Don't see myself getting on it anytime soon, but would love to try someday.  Maybe we will get 500khz sooner or later also.

75  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Cushcraft MA5B rotor question on: December 03, 2012, 08:23:34 PM
I have found a Cushcraft MA5B yagi at a good price, but wonder if my rotor will handle it.  I have a Hy-Gain AR303 light duty rotor.  Can't really afford a bigger rotor at this time.  Will the light duty rotor handle the MA5B ok?  This rotor is similar to the TV type rotors that sell for $80 new or so.
