91  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: TS-850 / TS-450 difference? on: November 28, 2012, 07:08:08 PM
If one is looking for a used TS850, Radio City in MN has 2 or 3 nice ones for sale for around $600.  See www.radioinc.com and click on the used equipment webcam link.

92  eHam Forums / CW / RE: Are fewer people using CW than 20 years ago? on: November 28, 2012, 07:00:10 PM
Not according to CQ magazine, who find a way to promote their believe that "CW is up since they did away with the morse code test" into almost every article they publish.  I guess they figure if they say it enough, they will end up believing it.  Nice case of rationalization since they heavily supported removing the morse test.  Guess they needed more subscribers.

Can't believe you had to go up to 100 watts to work Crozet!  Just kidding, that is a tough path from here and one I still need.  Tried the FT5XO on 100 watts when they were there with no luck.  What are you using for antennas?

I have 320 total worked, and about 300 of those have been on dipoles, verticals, and a random wire antenna, so you can do a lot with not much.

94  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: This weeks DXCC Sleuth => KH1 - Howland / Baker Island on: November 27, 2012, 08:15:10 PM
Somehow it just doesn't seem right (or possible) that one station could give out 2 different entities like that.  I wonder what happens if a station is exactly on an international border-can it count for both entities?  It works that way for counties and grid squares.

95  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: With DX stations ... what does "Up" mean. on: November 27, 2012, 10:00:38 AM
What I have found is that some DXpeditions either use memories or just spin the knob.

However, I find that more and more are just spinning the knob. You can "tail end" a lot of them but some you have to just sit and call.

I hate those types of pileups.  I always feel like they will only hear the big signals.  I like it much better when they use some sort of predictable pattern for listening, because most people cannot really figure out the pattern.

Now these places are left with no human activity and we as a country are deciding these are nature areas to be kept as pristine as possible.

Funny, I am part of the USA, and I don't recall that issue ever appearing on a ballot.  We as a country aren't deciding that, a few well placed individuals are.

times is the right person making the right contacts and what we thought could never be is suddenly on the DX Calendar.

And the right sized campaign contribution to the right person.

I would look for a used Yaesu FT450-good DSP, built in filters, built in voice keyer, should be able to find a used one for $500 or so. Don't worry about the AT model, the built in tuner isn't any good. It also gives you 6m which is a really fun band.  Has a built in transmit monitor for SSB as well.

I live 35 miles from the Red River.  I will mount one of the first DXpeditions to Texas!  Wait, I guess they have enough resident hams. There goes my hope of going on a DXpedition.

Is it kind of like what Somaliland, Northern Cyprus, the north part of Mali, parts of the Republic of Georgia, and probably a few other separatists movements have done?  Look how many of those are on the DXCC list.  Not to sound pessimistic, but I think lots of areas have non-binding or non-recognized votes for succession.  Puerto Rico just voted to become a state.  I wouldn't rush out buying new flags yet.

Worked them on 12m SSB as well for a new band country.  No pile at all for them.  Also got EL2A today on 10m in the contest for a new band country. That is 4 new band countries in 5 days, guess that kind of makes up for missing PT0S on CW.  Now to get 5T on RTTY!

102  eHam Forums / Contesting / RE: Did you ever take a break from contesting on: November 25, 2012, 04:34:35 PM
One common thread I see so far is that contesting seems to pick up in retirement. Is it normal to have your ham activity dip way down when raising kids?

I would continue to contest much more if my life allowed it as well.  RIght now it just doesn't seem to be.  It is stressful enough without the additional stress of trying to fit a contest into it.  I just run 100 watts to a dipole as well.  Did use the cluster to find and work EL2A a few moments ago for a new 10m country.  That is probably how I will make contest QSOs for the next few years-just get new band or mode countries.  Not even send in a log.

In 9 years or so my daughter will be off to college. Things should really settle down then (I sure hope, at least).

Timor was added before 2001.  I worked it back in 2000 and it was on the list then.

How was Bob's 2007 book?  I loved "The Complete DXer" but it does show how serious DXing has to be a life's dedication.  It sure is hard to make that dedication when you have a family to raise, job, etc.  I have read lots of ham bios where they said they were QRT during the family/work years.  I can be thankful that my situation hasn't reached that point.
