Well I ended up mounting the G5RV at 20' horizonatal and I have been able to work Italy on 20 meters, Washington on 10 meters and South Carolina on 40 meters. I'm able to tune the SWR down on 80 thru 10 meters. Thanks for all the info.

I have a G5RV Jr. antenna that I'm going to put. It is suppose to cover 40 thru 6 meters. According to the instructions that came with it I can hang it at a minimun of 16 foot. It's 51 foot long and comes with 15 1/2 foot of ladder line. The instructions says to run at least 70 foot of coax to antenna tuner and you don't need a balum. I'm planning of hanging it with the center at 30 foot and the ends at 20 foot. Will I be alright with this height? Can't get any higher than that. Second, can or should I add a 4:1 balum or 1:1 balum to where I don't have to run 70 foot of coax when I could get by with about 30 foot to the shack entry point. Any help and information will be greatly appreicated.

eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / G5RV close to Hustler 5BTV - does it matter?

I have a G5RV that runs parallel to my Hustler 5BTV. The G5RV is within 5 feet of the 5BTV. Would this cause a problem with either of the antennas being that close together? I have the G5RV at about 18 - 19 feet up and the 5BTV is mounted on a 10 foot mast, so that has the G5RV about level with the spider assembly. Right now I'm using the 5BTV antenna. Just curious.

Well I put the rf chokes on at the base of antenna and run some radials. Still the same problem with the power dropping at the radio on 80, 40 and 15 meters. 10 meters is ok and 2 meters is ok. So I don't know what else unless it is the power supply.

I'm using West Mountain Plug n Play to send and recieve. I usually have it set to send at about 18 to 22 wpm. I will continue to try and see if I can make contact with someone then. Thank you.

I have been on 80, 40, and 15 meters at night and its like my CW is not getting out. Is there anyway I can verify that my signal is getting out. Any help or suggestions will greatly appreciated.

The power supply is a Jetstream switching supply and its 25 amp continuous and 30 amp surging. The power stays the same on the power supply if the radio is transmitting at 100 watts or 25 watts on CW or voice.

You can notice it starts at about 50 watts and up. I can drop it down below 50 watts and the power supply voltage will stay at 13.8 volts dc. When you get above 50 watts then the voltage will start dropping as you go up on the watts then the voltage will continuely drop till its about 12.6 volts dc. On the other comments, the choke at MFJ that I found are the chokes that you place around the coax. Is this what you were referring to? I like the price of them compare to the rf choke that DX engineering has.

I'm leaning toward rf interference. New power supply and radio. Both were fine until antenna change out. But on 10 meters the voltage doesn't drop at all. The swr on 15 and 40 meters is 1.1 to 1.5. When sending CW, I'm using the West Mountain Plug n play to send and recieve. Before the antenna change out had no problems. Do I need to run a ground wire from the antenna to a ground rod say right next to antenna? Thanks for all the help so far.

I put up a new Hustler 5BTV antenna 10 foot off the ground and radicals yet. I notice on CW when sending, the power reading for the radio drops from 13.8 volts to around 12.5 volts dc. Is this norml? Also it seems like there is a ground hum on the radio now I can hear in my headphones. The grounding system wasn't mess with. I went from a G5RV to this Hustler. Any suggestions

Plug n Play and FT-897D Help

I'm using the West Mountain Plug n play and MRP40 for my CW to send and receive. I'm having trouble getting my cw out on my FT-897D radio. Is there something that I need to do thru the program on the FT-897D or what? It's hook up to the radio and it receives the code and prints it out on the computer screen. I have tried and tried to get it to work. When I send out my message in CW, I hear it thru the computer speakers but the radio just makes a loud blairing noise.
