1  eHam Forums / Misc / RE: Tapatalk? on: February 18, 2013, 11:55:13 PM
Some other forums I use on a regular basis have specifically ruled out Tapatalk since you have to give them unrestricted access to your user database. What this means is that if Tapatalk is ever compromised, every forum that uses that service will be compromised until the forum administrator removes Tapatalk (or Tapatalk fixes their issue). Most forum administrators would rather not worry about relying on some other system's security...

Can you find me an article on this? I use several large sized forums with tapatalk already and was having a bit of an issue finding something via  quick google search that indicated it gets "full access". It might, but I'd just like to read where this is specified. Only thing I was able to find is that most of the security flaws listed out there on sites, are ones that are out of date now and Tapatalk has since fixed, so looks like they tend to be fairly on top of things.
2  eHam Forums / Licensing / RE: New Ham, New to eHam on: February 18, 2013, 10:55:25 PM
Notice to all, I passed by AE on the first attempt, this past Saturday on February 9th.

Congrats! Welcome to the club Smiley
3  eHam Forums / Licensing / RE: Vanity Ramblings on: February 18, 2013, 10:53:42 PM
I applied for my vanity the day I received my call sign from my first licensing. I already knew I wanted it and that it was available and I didn't want to sit on my original call sign any more than I had to so people would just know me by my new vanity. To me this vanity is very important since I've been doing martial arts since 2000, and it looks like the word "kenpo" which is the current style I am studying presently. When I saw this call sign was available, I just knew it was meant to be my persona in the ham world.
4  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Dual-Band antenna mount on full-size van? on: February 18, 2013, 01:31:03 PM
Do you have a roof rack? I mounted my new antenna on my SUV's roof rack, very sturdy.

They also evidently added the option for forum owners to turn off Tapatalk signatures on a forum wide basis, found this on one of their help pages:

"To answer the concerns of Tapatalk Signature - we have added a new switch in the Forum Owner Area where you can disable the entire Tapatalk signature from the server-side, it is a master switch the app will adhere and will not insert signature regardless of the user's setting."

Just like when using an iPhone and replying to email, you can disable the "sent by my iPhone" which is what Taptalk does... "sent using tapatalk" signature. That's the only self advertising it does and you can stop it from doing that.

You simply go to tapatalk.com, go to your control panel, and update the settings.
7  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Current Technician Exams on: February 06, 2013, 09:30:44 PM
Thanks so much from me, Mary, a future Ham Operator. I take my test on March 2nd. Passing all the practice exams so far. Thanks again. 73, Mary

I'm sure you'll do fine! By the time you're passing all the practice exams it's definitely time to test and get it out of the way Smiley
8  eHam Forums / CW / RE: Morse Code with a mouse - practice sending on: February 06, 2013, 05:11:06 PM
Morse Mania on the Mac lets you try keying with your mouse.
9  eHam Forums / Misc / Tapatalk? on: February 06, 2013, 10:32:53 AM
Has there ever been any talk about enabling this forum to work with Tapatalk? http://www.tapatalk.com/

It's a wonderful way to read/browse/comment on forums from your mobile devices.
10  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: HF & Hybrids? on: February 05, 2013, 09:49:32 AM
I ran both a ts-50 and a 857 in a Toyota hylander and ford escape hybrid.  Yes it was noisier than non hybrid.  But it was totally usable.  I did most talking while mobile, not parked.  I worked many countries and states.  In the fall of 2011 when the bands were on fire I worked so much dx it got boring.  I was mostly on 17 or 10m some 20m.  I was using a mag mount antenna with ham sticks too.  I know that is not recommended and I know with a real antenna I would do better....but anything is better than nothing to me.  I say go for it.

I assume when you say 857, you mean a Yeasu 857.

I think the Highlander is very similar to the Lexus RX400h from what I've noticed (Toyota/Lexus is the same company over all) with just some minor differences between the two vehicles... so that gives me hope hearing you got it working in a highlander... I think my only good mounting option on my vehicle for a better antenna will be to use a roof rack mount since the mag mounts only seem to be good for my smaller antenna's...
11  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: HF & Hybrids? on: February 04, 2013, 09:54:28 AM
A: www.k0bg.com

B: the subject of HF in hybrids has been discussed before here on eham; if you've got a few minutes, a search may turn up some useful material.   I recall some discussion of someone running HF mobile in his Prius--so it's clearly possible.  :-)

Good luck!

Yeah I've seen that site before and had read "If you already own a hybrid vehicle, and are planning on installing amateur radio equipment, I wish you a lot of luck, and hope you have the patience of St. Job!" <-- so was hoping someone on the forum could list their experience w/ installs.

And yeah I've searched the forums but most of the posts are from 2010... 2009... 2004... so I was wondering what the latest experience people have had since most of these threads are at least a few years old Smiley

Hybrid Car Noise posts from 2005:

Escape Hybrid posts from 2006:
http://www.eham.net/ehamforum/smf/index.php/topic,30063.0.html
Honda Civic hybrid posts from 2006:

Noise problems in 2008 Civic Hybrid, all posts from 2008:
http://www.eham.net/ehamforum/smf/index.php/topic,39841.0.html
Lexus RX 450H (closest to my 400H which is an older version of this) in 2011:
http://www.eham.net/ehamforum/smf/index.php/topic,76141.0.html

The Lexus thread which may sound hopeful from the title only has a few comments about one guy and his Prius... and no actual follow up if they were ever able to quiet down the Lexus and it's noise for successful implementation with HF. Also that person who posted their question about the 450H *never* posted anything else on the forums, post count = 1. Sad

So hence, a new thread for a new year hoping for new responses and experiences to be posted Smiley
12  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: New Mac Desktops on: February 04, 2013, 08:58:19 AM
I love my macbook pro... and there's plenty of software to support ham operation on it from what I can tell so far. I only got licensed last month, but have been searching and installing anything relevant I can find...

I've currently got the following installed:
  • Aether (simple and efficient, a pricier alternative for logging is MacLoggerDX)
    EchoMac (haven't used yet)
    CocoaModem (haven't used yet)
    SdrRX (works great)
Morse Mania (use all the time to learn Morse currently)
MacDoppler (track the satellites, a little buggy but overall works)

And then don't forget about:
  • CrossOver

A pretty nifty app that will let you install windows programs on your mac... doesn't work for all programs, but supports a lot.
13  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / HF & Hybrids? on: February 04, 2013, 08:45:28 AM
I've read articles and been told by friends that hybrid vehicles are very noisy when it comes to running HF in the vehicle. Is it worth it? For those of you have HF in your hybrid, what setup did you go with?

I have a 2006 Lexus RX 400H that I'd like to put HF in... but don't want to waste the time, effort and money if it's going to be a bust from the start.
14  eHam Forums / CW / RE: Your Favorite morse code keys ! on: February 02, 2013, 05:30:21 PM
I'm still reading heavily as I learn to copy before I buy my first key. I noticed the Vizkey's have a lot of excellent ratings on eham as well. So many choices, it's overwhelming!
15  eHam Forums / Clubs / RE: Why not more women in ham radio? on: February 01, 2013, 02:21:55 PM
Anyway, I've seen it before, and hopefully this isn't an overly broad conclusion.....I think women are most attracted to those aspects of the hobby that involve something social.....setting up and/or attending events, setting up testing sessions, club meetings, etc.  True, their numbers are few, but those who enjoy ham radio seem to be social creatures.  Not bad considering that so many male hams are pretty awkward and introverted.

Like Jimmy Buffet says....Girls Rule!

I got my license originally because my husband encouraged me to do so for us to use our radios together when skiing... but then I was fascinated by the communities and other usage, I especially love listening into the local repeater around here. I'm up to my extra, decided to go all the way not necessarily because I needed all the access, but because once I started w/ the tests I just couldn't stop reading and studying so figured why not.
