eHam Forums / APRS / APRS Question

First off, Hello everyone!
I am fairly new to amateur radio and soaking it up like a sponge. I picked up a Kenwood TM-D710A a few weeks ago, what a great radio.
I do have a question in regards to APRS though. Can I setup a private APRS network? I am thinking this could be helpful when I go off with the Jeep club to keep an eye (so to speak) on the other members in the group without bogging down the main APRS system.
Thanks for your time and help.
Sincerely,
Jeff KK6CHE

Thanks guys for the replies. I ended up going with the Kenwood 710. I also purchased the RT system software to program the radio. Thus far I'm pretty impressed. Have a lot of learning to do, and the manual isn't very good.
Thanks again

eHam Forums / Computers And Software / Southern California Repeater Data for RT System Software

I pulled the trigger on a Kenwood TM-D710A yesterday and also purchased the RT system software package. I would imagine that people might have a data file already for the repeaters in southern California on both the 144 and 440 MHz bands? Is there a location on this forum where this information can be found?
Thanks for your time.

I am really new to the world of HAM radios, I currently have a Yaesu FT-270R handheld unit and a Kenwood TM-271 mobil rig with a Diamond NR770 antenna.
I would like to update my mobil radio to a dual band radio and am looking at the Yaesu FTM-350R and the Kenwood TM-D710A. Both these radios seem pretty similar in content and price. The reviews on eHAM seem to show that the Kenwood radio is slightly better based on the average scores for both unites.
The Kenwood has a digipeater (not sure what that gains me), while the Yaesu seems to have a built in GPS??? (correct me if I am wrong on this).
My other concern is, if I already have a Yaesu handheld unit, should I stick with the Yaesu brand? Any functions that are proprietary to the Yaesu unites that would benefit sticking with the same brand?
Thanks for your time.
