Great job, Jeff.  This post with its quality photos and your descriptions of the events should be a model for those of us who intend to present something like this on eHam in the future.

Bravo!

Only trouble with that Jeff, is that the reader would have to know about when WWII ended to find that tenth call area info on your link to the AC6V web page.  That would make a good "Jay Walking" bit though!   Grin

153  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Any RFI Experience with new Leviton "digital dimmer"? on: January 16, 2012, 10:15:00 AM
Well yesterday I was able to determine that neither Home Depot or Lowes handles these specific Leviton dimmers in the STL area.  So, I'll have to order one from the likes of Leviton or Amazon in order to do an evaluation.  I will be back!

Good point, Mark.  The product just might be too new for direct user reports at this point.  I might invest in one and disect it to see if I can identify the "Radio/TV filter".

Back on the RFI/EMI forum, Tisha, AA4HA, and others were discussing the new Leviton "filtered" AC wall outlets among other new products.  I haven't had a chance to read all their responses, but I will.

Thanks Don, I know that.  Been a ham for 50 years.  My question was specifically about the new "digital touch" dimmers from Leviton.  I've never replaced a dimmer in my house for ANY reason since 1997.  I am just looking for an edge on the NEW "digital" dimmers from Leviton.

VERY impressive collection, Dale.  Your dial and meter faces are extremely sharp and clean.  Do you make new ones for yourself or have you found a vendor who does such a nice job?  I found a local who made a few dial faces and he made one for my Philco cathederal restoration.  That was years ago and I know the technology to replace meter and dial faces must have changed dramatically.

Great work my friend.  I am envious to say the least.

157  eHam Forums / Elmers / Any RFI Experience with new Leviton "digital dimmer"? on: January 13, 2012, 10:39:02 AM
I posted this on the RFI/EMI Forum some time back and only got one response.  I know this Elmers forum gets more traffic, so, please pardon the OT repost.  (And, yes, it's 2012 and I've stocked up on a bunch of incandescent bulbs for the cans these dimmers will control).

I need to replace some old wall toggle switches in my kitchen and want to add a dimmer to a couple of the circuits involved.  The new Leviton toggle switch looks just like a standard toggle wall switch but has two very small "touch pads" just to the right of the toggle lever.  This looks similar to the former toggle dimmers that had a small lever in that location for dimmer preset.  Leviton calls this a "digital dimmer" (digital as in "finger" I suspect).  The specs claim a built-in Radio/TV interference filter.  Fortunately, I have had no ham radio RFI issues with any dimmer in my house (around a dozen or so) for 15 years and would like to continue that.  Has anyone had any experience with this new toggle dimmer?

This won't fit in an Altoids tin, but it is small, light, self-(crank)powered and provides a few other options.

WX7G:
Thanks for your note, Dave.  I did mention in the very last line of my post that I had prepared for the new changes by stocking up on incandescents for the kitchen.  I would not invest in standard dimmers without knowing that I had the bulbs in-house.

There are a number of sites on-line where you can order large quantities of incandescent bulbs for really low prices.  I have a large and varied supply.  Some of those sites report that they will have stock of those to satisfy customers demands for several years.  (Of course, the prices just might go up!  Cheesy )

But, I'm all set.

I have re-posted this in the Elmers forum in hopes of attracting more replies.  Thanks for looking.

162  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Two antenna's, one mast..... on: January 05, 2012, 11:17:12 AM
I googled "Comet GP-9 Installation" and this was the second hit:

http://www.cometantenna.com/pdfs/GP-9.pdf

I agree that you are asking for problems installing the GP-9 on the same mast as the Titan vertical.  75-100 feet of coax should not be an issue for you.  Use good quality coax, particularly with the VHF/UHF antenna.

Sorry, that was the UHF (450MHz) chart.  The next page (p2 of the .pdf document) has VHF cutting info.

Hi Jason,

This is a cutting chart for MaxRad antennas, although one can't be positive about the model you have without more information.  (normal or no ground plane versions, etc)

But,I suspect you may have a problem other than the length of the rod.  While you should "prune" the rod length for frequency, that rod would have to be WAY off to truly impact receive capabilities.  Do you have a way to check continuity from the tip of the PL259 to the antenna rod itself to assure that there is a good connection there?

165  eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / RE: wiring up old Shure 55SH Series 1 mic to Kenwood TS-130S on: January 04, 2012, 02:35:30 PM
Thanks for posting your results, Andy.  Many posters on this site just disappear.  The 55S was the mic of choice for my 1960's soul band back in high school.  We used two on the horn section, one on the "kick drum" and four on vocals.  Better known then as the Shure Unidyne.  Much refered to today as the "Elvis mic".

Very rugged and reliable with a classic sound.  Still have one in my collection.  Glad you got it figured out.  Enjoy!
