1  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Good News About Kingman Reef - KH5K on: May 18, 2013, 08:36:21 PM
OK,  I was fortunate enough to be around when they were on and have them
confirmed on 20/15/10/40/80.  I guess it pays to have been DXing for a long time.
Or should I say to be an old DXer,  no I like the DXing for a long time better  Grin

It is above water at high tide, and is even protected from high surf. I have 100% confirmation from the Scripps Institute and marine biologists who have been there recently doing research. There is only 3 feet left above water at high tide, and an area of about 15' by 100' of coral rubble. This means any activation would have to be small. NO BIG TEAMS . . . .

It is in no danger of being deleted from the DXCC List - those 13 year rumors were unfounded. I met with Arne from the DXAC at Visalia, and am confident it will stay on the list.

There are ships that can easily get there from Honolulu, and the distance from Honolulu is similar to going from Kiribati. Kiribati has issues as far as available ships - Honolulu has an abundance of possibilities. Relative to VK0/H, FT5/Z and P5, this one would be less expensive.

The US F&W says that its nearly impossible to gain access, but I have some ideas . . . . I can only imagine how incredibly cool it would be to activate . ..  and as all of you know - its been my "obsession".

Stay tuned . . . .

Rich,
Do you need Kingman Reef for ATNO ?

3  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Placement of a K9AY loop antenna on: May 15, 2013, 09:34:52 PM
The couple of articles I've looked at on the K9AY indicate that it should be as far as possible from the transmitting antenna.  If 40' is as far as possible, so be it.  Grounding the feed line of the loop may have some positive impact, but not nearly so much as grounding it at the feedpoint.

73,

Don, K2DC

I'll try it at 40 feet away and see what happens.  Grounding sounds like where I should start if I see interaction.  I think the trick is to make the antenna non resonant during receive so it doesnt couple to the loop and spoil the pattern and grounding at the right place might do the trick.  Hope that is all I need to do.  Thanks for the ideas Don.

I am building a K9AY loop for receiving on 80 and maybe 160 in the future.
I am using a 65 foot high inverted L for 80 which is suspended off the side of my tower at a
slight angle.  Unfortunately my property will not allow me to put up the K9AY any more than
40 feet from the inverted L.  Anyone have experience with the K9AY antenna this close to
the transmit antenna ?  I understand I might have interaction with the transmit antenna when receiving on the K9AY which goofs up the pattern of the K9AY.  If so maybe grounding the feed line to the L on receive will detune it ?

5  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: We are going through Solar Max NOW on: May 13, 2013, 08:01:33 PM
Well, speaking of solar activity, Ol' Sol belched out two X-class flares this morning. An X-1.7 and what now looks like a 2.8. Neither was earth-directed but the spot that's generating that activity should rotate around in a few days.

And soon after a X3.2 Smiley
Could it be? Can it really be peaking and hopefully staying high for a nice long period?

I hope so  Cheesy

Congrats Jonathan !
I managed to work 9N a couple of years ago.  Very seldom hear one.
Have you worked 8Q7KP in the Maldives yet ?
I finally worked them yesterday for ATNO.

I get the main receiver in my left ear and the sub receiver in my right ear. The volume and balance controls control how much of each.

Wx2s.

I do the same thing with stereo headphones.  I listen to the DX in the left ear and stalk the pileup in the right ear. I love it.   Try it and you will never go back to the old way  Grin

I heard that Krish has made it to VU OK. A couple of bags are delayed and hopefully arriving tomorrow morning. Either way he has contingency plans in hand. So  all is looking good.

This Maldives DXpedition is slated to start in a cope of days on the 23rd.  I've been trying to find out any information on how they are proceeding and is it still a go.  Anyone have an update on how they are doing ?

I hope so too.  It would be an ATNO for me.
Looks like he has to get the transportation issues resolved first.

I've worked them on 10, 15 and 20 in two days so now I'll try and to work them on the WARC bands and 40 meters.  They are doing a good job handling the pileups are although signals are not overpowering they are good. I'm sure the recent spike in sunspots has helped.  20 has had very nice conditions over the pole in my late evening to UA9 and UA0 as well as to the Middle East. 20 has also had nice openings to the Pacific during my early morning hours.  I worked 5W0M at 0400Z on 20 meters.

I have curtailed activity quite a bit now that baseball season has started. There is nothing new scheduled for me until next year with Heard and Amsterdam so I may as well enjoy my Boston Red Sox.

Chris/NU1O

I need Heard also Chris.  I will be watching the SF Giants win the series again  Grin Grin

14  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Modifying an MA-160V turning it into a great lowband DX antenna on: April 14, 2013, 10:56:11 PM
I have been following this thread with much interest.  Learning more about 160 meter antennas thanks to you guys.   I am planning a 160 meter inverted L or something similar myself.  Looking at ON4UN's book I noticed a T configuration also.  I can manage a 160 meter L or T which would be 75 feet vertical and then one horizontal wire or two horizontal wires in a T.  The horizontal wires would
have to slope down about 45 degrees.  I am trying to figure out the length of the T horizontal wires,
(presumably shorter than the L wire) and the advantage if any of the T top loading compared to the L
config.

Bob
K6UJ

If a T is used the top -loading wire, the horizontal (high -angle ) radiation from this top wire will be effectively canceled in the far field.

I believe the T is a more effective DX antenna than a L .

But a lot comes into play. Radials - Radials - Radials besides other things. I think at lest 65 radials should be used on a ground mounted vertical T . Mine now has 115 -130 foot radials.

How long the top wire ? My T is 64 foot vertical and the top wire is about 45feet 8 inch on each side of vertical section

Xs=0 at 1.835 I made it a little high.

If ground mounted and if you use radials on the ground the Top Wire is adjusted to find the Xs= 0 or resonance freq.

I would suggest you put your radial field in place before you build the T. If you build the T then the radial field , things will change on you.

If you use elevated radials then the Top hat is the missing portion of the vertical plus a % or the equal of the other half as I recall.
The Xs=0 is obtained by adjusting the 2 radials and not the Top hat.

The Insulators at the end of the T or top wire should be very good . High Voltage is present at the ends.

For a discussion on the T verses the L go to Top Band reflector
http://lists.contesting.com/_topband/2008-10/msg00041.html

I use a 80 meter band  T vertical with 2 elevated radials and though I could improve it with a good ground screen below and perhaps 2 or more radials . I find the antenna is in general as good or better than the ground mounted 160 meter T. But the 80 T is elevated to 14 feet. And 80 meters is not 160 meters.

I have used a L and many many many hams use a L  with good success on Top Band, they do  work. From what I understand if you wanted to work more USA you might want the L over a T
 .
But for dxing , I will stick with the T for now. The claim is a T receives better than a L . I have no clue . I use lots of Beverage antenna but then again the T does receive signals very good.

I am no expert on this subject but this my understanding of the antennas and experience I have had.

Your T with 64 foot vertical wire and two 45'-8" T wires sounds doable for me.  I hope I can get away with about 30 degrees or so down slope on the two T wires.  Will see how it works out.  I appreciate all the info, thanks.
