Finally got that 80 meter band CW QSO this evening . That totals 4 bands for me, including 17, 20 and 40. Wish I could have got them on 30, and may yet still, if they stick around for a couple more days. I listened in on PT0S on a couple SSB spots and decided I did not want to stick my nose in there. That little road show on 40 SSB the other nite will go down in history as the largest DX cluster foxtrot I have ever heard . They are still there now, pounding out QSOs. If you need em on 80, now is certainly your chance. The pile is not as big as it has been, but they are sure not begging! 73, Gene AF3Y Congrats on getting them on 80 Gene ! I somehow managed to make an 80CW QSO also. I don't know how I made it. It wasn't my poor excuse for an 80 meter antenna and it couldn't have been my operating skill 73, Bob K6UJ

I also understand that there are limitations - I don't have the perfect location or station - but I like what I have very much. Its not a great QTH for DX-ing, but fantastic for cycling, and I lost 30 pounds this year - which is way more important than DX-ing anyway.
That is part of my problem-cycling is a big hobby of mine also. Hard to find time for chasing DX and cycling as well. Lost about 20 pounds myself this year, but some of it has crept back on once the fall DX conditions hit, and I was showing signs of overtraining from the exercise bike and running so had to back off of that a little John AF5CC John and Rich, I didn't realize there were other cycling DXers on board. I also am a cyclist, enjoy the great rides here in northern cal. I enjoy building up and riding road bikes, just finished outfitting a Carbon Fiber Trek Madone frame I bought with all Campy gear and it really rides sweet. I have a goal (besides making HR ) to ride my first century. This summer I did an 80 miler which is my record so far. I have been able to keep my weight in check and my sanity too, hihi, thanks to cycling. Dont want to get too carried away with cycling here, just wanted to throw in my two cents. Its great to hear there are other Ham Radio cyclists around. 73, Bob K6UJ

John, There is no remedy. You are afflicted with DXer disease. You exhibit some of the symptoms. Take comfort in knowing that we DXer brothers share the same malady and feel your pain. Some other symptoms you have probably already have: Desire to be on the radio at sunrise. Desire to be on the radio at sunset. Desire to be on the radio at all times between Sunset and Sunrise. Desire to struggle for months to work a single station in a new country. In extreme cases, this might go on for more than a year. Never being satisfied with the antenna system and constantly trying new ones. Only comes down to see the family after working a new country (to gloat). During the rare fantastic opening, will come down after each new country and hold up fingers indicating how many new countries were worked so far. ... Drinks lots of water before going to bed with the sole purpose of waking up in the wee hours of the morning to see if a new country can be found. Getting a litte bit serious, I have had the same obsession John. Sometimes after sitting there for hours in a pileup without any luck I just shut down and get away from it for a while. Coming back later or the next day sometimes yields a contact and how sweet it is! 73, Bob K6UJ

eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Have Your DX-ing Goals Changed Over the Years?
|
on: November 21, 2012, 08:01:48 PM

I have been progressing (slowly) towards the main goal of HR. I have 304 now and hope this sunspot cycle bestows many more ATNO As far as goals changing, I am about 60% there for 8BDXCC which has been a secondary goal, havent done much in the way of band fills. But from what I understand from the long range sunspot forecasters the next two cycles after this one will be lackluster and probably not much propagation on the higher bands like 10 and 15. I need about 40 countries on 10 for dxcc, and about 30 on 15. I think I will give a priority with band fills for these two bands during cycle 24 while we have propagation. 73, Bob K6UJ

(I can help you with this - if you email me - I'd be more than happy to give some advice). Also - (ask K6UJ) - I can even give you a strategy to work something like PT0S from the West Coast - where EU and NA East Coast kicks the Wests Coasts butt . . . . (hope you don't mind me mentioning this Bob - hi hi). Rich, Dont mind you mentioning it at all. Since our last email discussing strategy I now have both 40 and 80 in the PT0S log I have marginal antennas for these bands, the 80 meter contact was really sweet, didn't think I had a chance on 80 from the west coast. 73, Bob K6UJ

By the way, Gene W5DQ...... I was born in South Carolina, grew up in South Carolina, went to College in South Carolina and married a girl from South Carolina.
Where someone is from or not from makes no difference regarding being an asshole on the radio. I dont hold a grudge against anyone from anywhere, except those who give reason, like screwing up the DX. Actually, if the truth be known, I am probably one of the most Liberal users of this site. That has, or at least should have, NOTHING to do with the goons who scream out the ignorant profane rants on SSB.
I lived in the South most of my life, especially if you consider Florida the South..... (about half of it in SC) some dont, and thats OK too. But, let me tell you something, I can detect a southern drawl as well as anyone, having had one most of my life. Their lack of vocabulary, except for their large doses of profanity and backwoods english speaks little for their education as well. MOST of the guys that I hear are positively from the south, and they are certainly not the "Southern GENTRY".
Nah, I am certainly not a displaced Yankee, but I do have an awful lot of friends from "Up Nawth", as well as from the South. None of my friends wants to leave the Union that I am aware of, and MOST of them voted for the losing candidate as you did. So what? I dont hold grudges because of anyones political leanings either.
Sorry you took my very broad statement personally. If it offended you as much as it seems.... I apologize. Sorry.....
73, Gene AF3Y
Gene, I don't blame him for taking it personally. Take a minute and reread your post. What kind of reaction did you expect ? I am offended by your post also. Pretty juvenile to single out areas of the USA and point the finger. Unless you are motivated to create hard feelings and make enemies I suggest you think about what you are going to post and what impact it would have before posting. Bob K6UJ

eHam Forums / DXing / RE: CW Speed & DXpeditions
|

I think that is a big part of the problem. I would think only full time CW buffs and serious contesters are fluent at 35 wpm. I'm pretty good in the low 20s but no way could I carry on a CW ragchew at 35 wpm. I've also read complaints that this is just another CW expedition. They have used phone but I think that's the ham's way of saying I'm no good at these speeds or with CW at all. We now have many amateurs who don't know CW at all. Those maybe the guys jammimg and QRMing since they are shutout when they operate CW. The best thing I did to add rare DX to my totals was to become proficient with CW. I had no choice as it was required on the test but I'm glad I enjoy the mode and got better as the years progressed.
I have no problem pulling out my call at 35 wpm but I also have the K3 standing by as a crutch decoding the CW on its small screen in case he sends messages I can't copy.
In a CW contest 35 wpm is fine but they may work more stations per hour if they slowed down to 25 wpm.
If Chris the pilot is following this topic maybe he could share his ideas.
73,
Chris/NU1O
Chris, I think you are right. This is where some of the jamming, is coming from. If they cant do CW at 35 WPM they get frustrated and with their warped mentality they jump on xmit freq and display their frustration (if I cant work them I will prevent others from working them) On the positive side, it is pleasure to work the good CW ops at 35. Plus their QSO rate is significantly higher. I heard a funny one yesterday. They were on SSB and someone was sending a string of dahs, over and over on their xmit freq, pause and then repeat. Someone asked "why are you doing that ?" another came on and said "thats all he knows how to send" 73, Bob K6UJ

There is hope yet Starting tomorrow there will be two ops on from Monaco. Got this from the DX World site: From November 9-17, 2012 look for 3A/ON5UR and 3A/ON8AK running SSB only. So far they have permission for one base station, but hope to find a solution to get two stations on the air. They will operate from 10 to 80M. Bob K6UJ

John, W7KH is at the top of the list for ARRL Mixed DXCC with 398 confirmed. What makes this especially noteworthy is that he doesn't have a computer in his shack. Still uses paper logs only. He doesn't use the DX spotting clusters, (doesn't use LOTW ) 73, Bob K6UJ

eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Top of the DXCC Honor Roll

It never ceases to amaze me. The comments in this thread are essentially the same we heard in the 1960s and 1970s about DXCC countries that were inactive for one reason or another. Delete them or give us credit for them was the plea. The concept of waiting then, and now, is foreign to the "got to have to have it now" generation. Who would have ever thought Vallio and Laine would be crazy enough to sit on a rock for days on end with sea water nipping at their toes, or other DX-peditioners going to other DXCC countries equally dangerous. Maybe in our new politically correct world and our new found concern for anything that remotely appears dangerous we'll simply remove all those DXCC entities (or is it countries) that are "hard" to get. Level the playing field, make it easier, give everyone a chance to "have them all". YEA equality in DXCC, every one at the top. Maybe we should remove the ones where there are less than 10 permanent operators, maybe we should remove the ones that don't have an airport or suitable docking facilities, or 4 star hotels. 50 years of DXing and nothing has changed, still the same whining. 73, P.S. Oh, I have them all worked Whats your call CBISBACK ? Bob K6UJ
