Now that I have bored you with my most exciting DX contact from the novice days, I believe my best DX catch was KP1, Navassa Island. Rare and not an easy contact at all, the pileups were huge.

Great contact Chris, I'll bet you did the victory dance all around the shack I know your question was the best DX contact but Id like to share my most exciting DX contact, not my best contact but one that I will always remember. I was 13, a novice, and was on only 40 meters CW. My receiver was a Hammarlund HQ-100 and my transmitter was a converted ARC 5 unit modified for 40 meters. (remember the ARC 5's?) It was crystal controlled. I had never had a contact outside the US. Mostly CA and sometimes Nevada, and when really cooking made it to Oregon, This one evening I called CQ and OMG a KH6 called me !!! I nervously answered him, my keying was terrible on the J38 but I made the contact. I barely slept that night, got up several times to check the band, hihi. 73, Bob K6UJ

Rich,
Thanks for the info on propagation from St. Louis. Looks like 160m and even 80m are going to be tough to impossible for me, given the "quiet hour" restraints on the operation. Nevertheless, I made a small donation to this expedition. Remember that the quiet hour restrictions may be waived in the event of bad weather that would make night-time travel to or from the boat hazardous, so nothing's impossible here. Lets hope they have bad weather in the evening/night There is hope for 160 yet !! Bob K6UJ

Just worked XX9THX on 17 phone (around 1445z in NJ). Not for the low-wire and stock-power crowd, though. Very light with pretty thin audio.
AND very little or NO cw so far. Another TT8? Gene, AF3Y I'm with you Gene. No CW ? Luckily I have Macao confirmed on 20 and 15 CW, whew !! 73, Bob K6UJ

Gene, Another perspective on your post. I have noticed that recently there are more dxpeditions putting more emphasis on digital modes or completely digital. I would love to see more CW like you. However these dxpeditions are just the ones I need that I am barking about which is not an indicator of the majority of DXpeditions. I would like it if they all used CW only. 73, Bob K6UJ

I also missed Glorioso and need for ATNO. Looking forward to another opportunity BTW it was good to meet you at Pacificon. Your presentation in the antenna forum was great, really illuminated the value of HFTA ! I'm going to dig in and use it for my station. 73, Bob K6UJ

eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Niger - RTTY only ?

5U6E seems to spend all his time on CW, and I have heard him spending a lot of time listening for VK/ZL and W6/7. Often the Europeans keep calling, frustrating him and at times driving him to go QRT.
5U5U does seem to be focusing on RTTY, and my experience mirrors the other poster, was easier to work than 5U6E who had a significantly larger pileup.
Best of luck! -Dave KH2/N2NL
That is good to hear, there is hope yet ! thanks Dave Bob K6UJ

I worked 5U8NK on 17M SSB and 5U6E on 17M CW. They do have online logs, if you are lucky enough to work them.
Looks like 17m is where I need to pay attention. Thanks for the info. 73, Bob K6UJ
