1  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: electric winch for LG-70HD on: May 18, 2013, 02:47:00 PM
Wouldn't a worm gear winch/ hoist offer better gear reduction and the ability to "stay" wherever it is stopped?

I'd be worried about the CPU's temperature in a black car's trunk during a Kansas summer.

Do you worry about the car 's CPU in the Kansas heat?  Or the heat effect on the stereo?  The seats, dash, etc?  Finding a shady spot to park in would be my solution.
3  eHam Forums / Station Building / RE: Building a new shack - literally on: April 20, 2013, 10:04:56 AM
I have an opportunity to build almost what ever I want into the design of our next house.  So I'm soliciting ideas of what I should build in so to speak for cable entrance and for ground and lightening protection.

The shack will be in the basement this time and I'm worried about water coming in if I put a conduit from ground level to the basement.  How is that done and not cause issues?

What else would you do?
Thanks
Noel
First off I would not use concrete for the walls of the basement, use wood instead.  "Wood" basements are common here in southern MN.

Besides, concrete is COLD.  No matter how you heat the room, it will need heat for you to be comfortable.  The other thing I would do is use in-floor hydronic heating.  I got a neighbor w/ in floor heat in his garage.  It is nice to walk in there during winter.
4  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: New and confused about antennas on: April 15, 2013, 08:33:10 PM
Any antenna is better than NO antenna.  That being said, I put up a G5RV twelve years ago and never looked back.  Sure there are better antennas, but I wanted something that works right now.  I bought a vertical from another ham op and just never got the time to put it up yet...

Find a Yaesu FT-840 or FT-890.  I bought a FT-890AT a few years ago for $600.  The FT-890 comes w/ FM and a automatic tuner.

6  eHam Forums / Emergency Communications / RE: Does anyone use packet as part of Emergency Communications? on: February 22, 2013, 11:38:43 PM
We already know from ABUNDANT experience how well the cell providers hold up;  not very well.

I have never had a cell phonr failure here in the midwest.  Of course we only get tornado's and blizzards.  By the time hams get a packet network going here in an emergency, Verizon Wireless will have a cell site up and running.

pros about encryption: Because I don't want the local deputy transmitting mine or anyone elses social security number over their traffic channel in the clear.

cons about encryption: On the other hand I like to be able to listen to our local dispatch channel to find out about any accidents so I can plan an alternate route around town.

Prior to switching to the MN ARMER system from VHF, I never heard a SSN called in.  At a time you might have heard a DL number, but you never hear that today, as all LEO's have mobile data terminals now (basically a computer w/ an aircard).

That being said, there have been two high profile cases in MN about individuals in the DNR and Police agencies accessing personal data via the DL database.  I am more concerned w/ computer data access than hearing my SSN on the local police net.

Another reason I no longer use a "amateur" license plate on my vehicle, you kind of stick out...

I cant seem to find the pull start cord on my solar panels. They don't make a sound either for that matter.

Hmmm, so they provide no power after 6PM either?
9  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: Dual-Band antenna mount on full-size van? on: February 22, 2013, 11:04:30 PM

But that is not possible without the services of a professional installer, and I live far away from such, out in the desert/mountains of west Texas.

So there is no mobile radio installer w/in miles?  Or a Best Buy type store that does stereo installation?  Even my local Verizon Wireless store does stereo installs...  A hole in the roof is nothing.  Yes, I have done it, it is not that big of a deal.

10  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Isn't this illegal??? on: February 06, 2013, 08:33:45 PM
If "the sh*t hits the fan" are you really going to worry about what the FCC has to say?  Of course its illegal, along w/ speeding, smoking in a public bldg, and removing the tag from your pillow.  Why politicians keep enacting these laws for I don't know.  I guess it keeps some of **us** employed.  From my understanding the "average Joe" breaks three felony laws before leaving the house in the morning.  I don't have time to worry what someone does on 14.242 Mhz...

11  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: How to properly join in a QSO on HF... on: February 01, 2013, 06:49:05 PM
I wouldn't even begin a QSO on 80m without first talking in person who is already established as a "presence".  Talk about "cliqueish", those diehards on 80m wrote the book, AND made the changes...

12  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Grounding station in 2nd story extra room on: February 01, 2013, 06:44:40 PM
How do I get a decent ground for transceiver in second story room? There are no cold water pipes near by. Should I run something out of bedroom window to ground rod or Huh

Do a search of this forum.  You will find to on-going war between **no ground needed** to **I have 10 eight foot cooper rods in**.

A two things to think about.  A dipole does not need a "ground".  That being said, if lightning DIRECTLY hits your house, it is toast.

I use a G5RV.  My FT-890 (ground terminal) has a wire connected to a ground rod, just outside the window of my operating position.  My power supply is grounded thru the wall outlet.

13  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: Digital scanner on: February 01, 2013, 06:36:48 PM
You sould purchase a Uniden BCD996XT.  Other than the fact I have two of them, you can control them w/ FreeScan, a D/L from the 'Net.  The user interface is easy to use.  It takes a while to get used to the way the newer digital P25 "channels" are setup.  I worked for a month.  Finally found the RadioReference site...

14  eHam Forums / Elmers / RE: Vertical antenna on metal roof on: January 21, 2013, 07:51:14 PM
I need to replace the roof on my house and am considering an aluminum metal roof.

Aluminum???  That has to be spendy.  Why not just plain steel.  It comes in many colors and textures nowadays.  They even have stuff that look like "real" shingles.

The only other problem I see is, after the price of a new roof and installation, why would you want holes in it putting an antenna up on it?

15  eHam Forums / Repeaters / RE: Cross Band Repeater Rules and Frequencies on: January 21, 2013, 07:39:56 PM
"To my knowledge my radio can only be set up for two way cross band repeat. There aren't any menu settings for cross band operation. To get into cross band mode I select one frequency on one VFO, the other frequency on the other VFO, and then put it into cross band mode by restarting the radio and entering a special setup menu.

Also, there is no way that I know of to do what you're saying with CTCSS tones alone with my radio. I can set a CTCSS encode tone and a DCS decode tone, I think that would work but I can't set a different CTCSS tone for send and receive."

I have a 15 y/o FT-8100 and 20 y/o DJ-580 HT that will do 2-way or 1-way crossband, AND allow for separate encode/ decode CTCSS.

It is just a matter of programming the radios.  Read the manual that came w/ your radio.  Then read it again, s l o w l y, saying every word to yourself.  I used this technique at work a number of times went I was stumped with a problem.  My workmates used to call me "book smart"... cause I read so much.
