16  eHam Forums / Emergency Communications / RE: Are Hams prepared for a nuclear accident? on: March 17, 2011, 12:13:14 PM
Back in the day, when we had a somewhat functional Radiological Defense plan in this country (before James Lee half-Witt took over FEMA), a LOT of the Radiological Monitors and Defense Officers were also radio amateurs.

There probably aren't too many of us left.  I can tell you that I still have a full suite of calibrated, functional instruments in my posession.  Everything from an AN/PDR-60 (alpha survey) to an AN/VDR-2 (beta/gamma).

I live and work in relatively close proximity to several reactors...

Fed differentially - as a dipole - it can radiate well but will have a low input impedance due to the proximity of the roof.

On the other hand, at night the corona discharge would be a real eyecatcher!  Grin

People get a little squirley about selling kits that have lethal voltages in them.

That and FCC compliance.

On the other hand, there would probably be fewer cold solder joints and loose parts!  Grin

One that comes to mind is RACES Logger by KB3HIY: http://raceslogger.com/

Front Panel Express - http://www.frontpanelexpress.com/

They have a nice CAD tool and they do excellent work.

Is there a 6-meter only SDR kit available (something like a Genesis G6)?  Why? I am kind of intrigued with the CML Micro CML7163 QAM modem, which claims up to 96 kbps in a 25 kHz channel.  Even with some forward error correction, that's a nice data rate and a real step-up from the conventional packet TNC.

22  eHam Forums / Repeaters / RE: Motorola Quantar Controller Installation and CL-100 Internet Linking on: February 22, 2011, 08:19:35 AM
You can find some information to get started at http://www.repeater-builder.com/motorola/quantar/quantar-index.html.  They have a Yahoo Group, as well.

If you go to the dutch-star.eu website, you can see what Fred has on the drawing boards at this point.  Will they come to fruition?  I don't know.  Although I think that it is very possible in the near-future that someone will develop an add-on for an existing 9600-bps capable radio along the lines of Kenwood's RC-210.

I'm a little surprised that this hasn't occurred to Kenwood quite honestly.

As far as the Internet being fragile, the Internet is not a requirement if someone is willing and able to spend the $$ to build something like a fiber/microwave ring and create a server to host the apps.  No different than the public safety network infrastructure really.

You are mistaken.  Join the yahoo groups and do the reading.  D-Star is showing signs of outgrowing the original Icom implementation through amateur-led reverse engineering and extensions such as a multi-trust based upon the IRC protocol.  Very interesting.

Here is the status of the various efforts as of January (thanks to NS7C for creating this table!):  http://www.armymars.net/D-Star_Support_Matrix.pdf

You might also look at the digi add-on for the TNC-X (www.tnc-x.com).

26  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: Where can you get an 8-pin din a-b switch? on: February 07, 2011, 04:13:01 AM
The easiest way would probably be to purchase an RJ-45 (8-pin modular) switch and a Cat-5E patch cord.  Cut the patch cord in half and solder two 8-pin DINs on the ends.

28  eHam Forums / Software Defined Radio / RE: SDR with knobs and buttons on: February 03, 2011, 07:46:56 AM
Just goes to show that Drs. are over paid.  I would bet money, marbles or chalk that half of those radios have not been on since he bought them.  Just another clown that thinks those that die with the most toys is the winner.

You are WAY over the line.  Dr Rohde (PhD-Engineer, not Medical) is one of the most talented designers of HF receivers and companies, not to mention a partner in Rohde & Schwarz.  He is one of those fortunate folks who have successfully combined their vocation and avocation.

1.  Go to the web site
2.  Create an account
3.  Enter the storefront
4.  Go to the products section, pulldown the codec chip
5.  Place it in your cart
6.  Look in your cart -- last I checked, it was 25 EUROdollars not US dollars

I admit, the site is not the easiest I've ever navigated, but I don't make this stuff up.  I'm building an Icom-less 70cm D-Star repeater at the moment using one of Fred's boards.

30  eHam Forums / Emergency Communications / RE: Government grant money need For American Ham radio manufactures on: January 24, 2011, 07:07:42 AM
A serious question-What is an EMP proof container for our rigs? This was mentioned earlier on this thread. This is interesting?

Thinking Faraday Cage?  Here's an idea -- Army surplus medical supply chest?

http://store.colemans.com/cart/medical-transport-chest-us-gi-aluminum-p-1279.html

Cleanup the edges and they might be quite serviceable.  If you want to pad the radios, conductive foam or those anti-static bubbles used in electronics packing might do the job for a reasonable price.
