Emtech makes a great tuner kit for $50 that will tune anything.

It will work. I tried it with my David Clark 10-30's and it was acceptable. I did not have quite the audio transmit quality of my Heil headset or the audio volume but they worked better in a high noise environment.

I have been using the Heil headset with my 706 with about the same settings as you are using for the standard mike. On the air reports from other station comparing the Heil and the standard mike showed the Heil to clearer and have more punch. I use the Heil headset mobile and find it works great. Not enough attenuation of the outside environment to interfere with safety but frees the hands up completely with superior audio.

All your options will work great!
1. I have had better luck with the 706 over the FT100, I think the reviews in EHam will bear that out.
2. the Yaesu ATAS is a great antenna and you can use it with the 706 with an AMCOM control unit. Any of the screwdrivers are the ultimate. The AH4 works great also but sometimes you may want to change the whips to get the best match.
3. I have my antenna mounted in the upper rear corner of the drivers side so that it just barely does not interfere with opening the hatch. I descided that the best setup in the center of the roof would be impossible to work on and too high. I used a hustler SS ball mount.
4. Ground, Ground Ground.......the remote mount is great if you want to really have it looking custom. .......Have fun!

I have owned my FT-817 for three weeks now. I bought it thinking that I would use it mainly for CW but have been pleasently suprised to find how effective it has been with SSB. I have been very pleased with the many 53 to 55 reports that I recieve. Working part time at it I have worked 32 countries in 3 weeks. Mainly 10-20M SSB. I have not had much luck busting pileups but as mentioned previously the DX seem to like to work QRP's and I don't try to fight 40M broadcast stations. To sum it up, I am working all the stations that I can hear clearly. I am very pleased!

I have just constructed a DCTL Antenna that I found at http:/home.earthlink.net/~mwattcpa/antennas.html. This twin lead loop seems to have considerable gain over the dipole that I have been using. Seems to be quieter also. Works thumbtacked to the corners of the motel room and like I said quieter than the dipole with better signal reports.
The article says the antenna was in CQ & 73 in mid to Late 1994 called a Distributed Capacitance Twisted Loop.
Good Luck! I'm pleased.

I also would be very interested in how other ham/road warriors are operating from motels. I have a 706 and a Scout that I drag along but would like to get even more portable so am building a Wilderness Radio SST and have my eye on the Yaesu 817. Since the operation is only going to be as good as its antenna, I am very curious about other creative ideas beyond my lightweight dipole.
Thanks in advance.
