eHam Forums / Elmers / Vertical HF Antenna Radial Field

Look at the articles at http://www.antennasbyn6lf.com/design_of_radial_ground_systems/ N6LF has done a lot of actual testing of different radial systems. Once you have a decent number of radials the difference in directivity with 180 degree coverage is in fractions of a db. Pete W6OP Thank you so much Pete, the radial presentation was excellent, and aligns with my work on ground vs elevated radial systems... It is so much easier to elevate your vertical, even up 2-4' and use 4-8 radials, than it is to use 64+ radials at ground level for a ground mounted vertical. Great stuff! Love it.' Marc

I've had the '850; it's a nice rig. But, I would consider the little, Yaesu FT 450. It has a better receiver than the '850, it's smaller, gotten rave reviews, and it's not that expensive.

How about tapping SOS on the pipes of a collapsed building, nerd head? Your too intellectual (full of facts, doctrine, and biases) that you no longer have common sense. Ken is now our official CW spokesperson. Go Ken Go! Marc

Ahh, very good Ken.
I tried WSPR. While it is cool, it is only beacon-beacon communication. I want to converse with others!
I will check out those modes.

Marc

eHam Forums / Computers And Software / 4Nec2 Software Tutorial Needed
|
on: October 11, 2009, 05:38:49 PM
|
Hello Folks, It's been 15+ years, but I am wanting to model antennas again. I pulled out my AO Antenna Optimizer v 6.35, and it doesn't work, so I figured 4Nec2 is now what I need to use. I like the idea of using an optimizer, and EZNEC doesn't appear to have this feature. In any case, I have gone to the 4Nec2 site http://home.ict.nl/~arivoors/), and downloaded the 4Nec2 and 4Nex2x pieces. I played around a little bit with it, but now realize I need a "for beginner" tutorial as to how to use the software. I downloaded everything on that site, no of which looks like a tutorial specifically for the software. Do you know of where such a tutorial may be? Regards, Marc KA3DNR

eHam Forums / Digital / WSPR Too Cool
|
on: October 08, 2009, 07:18:47 PM
|
Hello Folks, Setting up WSPR is a snap. http://wsprnet.orgIt is my understanding that it is essentially a beacon program. I get to see where I am getting to, and I can upload my RX files, for others to see if they are getting to Escondido, CA. Will WSPR ever be set up as a communications mode, not just a beacon mode? Thanks again Mel, G0GQK. Regards, Marc KA3DNR

Hello Mel, I didn't know WSPR existed; I am intrigued. Usage is going up in a linear fashion: http://wsprnet.org/drupal/wsprnet/statsI need to learn more about this. It appears to be beacon-like communication, not a QSO per se. I am ignorant. I'll go to the forums and start asking questions. Thanks again Mel! Regards, Marc KA3DNR

eHam Forums / CW / What ever happened to Coherent CW?

on: October 08, 2009, 11:42:43 AM

Hello Folks,
I recall back in the early 80's reading about CCW. I don't know what has come of it. I see an article here or there saying that it "evolved" to become PSK31, but to me that doesn't make sense, as CCW was supposed to be for razer-sharp selectivity (20 Hz) CW.
Thoughts?
Marc

Excellent Dan!
Thank you, and others, for taking the time to respond.
What you had stated is down the same train of thought I was going through.

eHam Forums / CW / Koch method to learn CW?
|
on: October 07, 2009, 06:18:39 PM
|
I like the Koch method. G4FON has a nice piece of free software: http://www.g4fon.net/I put the "Actual Characters Sent" about 15-20 WPM above where I can comfortably copy, and put the "Effective Code Speed" at the lowest WPM end, and work my way up in speed. You probably know this: Don't try to write down much. Marc KA3DNR
