eHam Forums / Elmers / Birds I don't like to hear singing...

Hello Folks,
I hope all is well with you.
I am getting birdies every ~5Khz, on all bands. When I unplug the antenna, the birdies go away. I, therefore, think that it is not an internal rig problem, but something around the house/antenna. The birdies are about an S 3 on the meter.
Any thoughts as to what it may be and/or how to fix?
Regards,
Marc KA3DNR

eHam Forums / Elmers / WARC BANDS INVESTMENT?

What AH6RR said is perfect. WARC is great for 30 M, and now 17 meters is starting to peep it's head out.
Thirty meters is a very nice CW band.

Elmers, et al.,
How long is this sunspot low going to last? It seems like it's been over two years.
And, does this long zero sunspot non-activity forebode a very weak peak?

Welcome to the hobby Dene!
I was just as nervous.
Radio communication is fascinating, and conversing with someone with no more than dots, dashes and spaces between them, is simply amazing.
I hope one day to work you, no matter how fast or slow you go...
Welcome!

Fantastic post Dene!
Welcome to the world of CW.
I love it too...
I enjoy working the CW ops so much...
Ah heck, you've made me now get all excited to have a CW QSO...I am going to run over to the rig and have a nice CW chat!
Regards,
Marc, KA3DNR

I love you guys...
I feel the need for a massive cw op group hug!
All in!
You are the best!
Regards,
Marc, KA3DNR (Catch me on the low end of 40. I need to remember that we have 30 meters and get on there too...)

"I think that cw should be declared historical heritage ot telecommunications."
Brilliant! I love it!
We should get some rebate from the government for using said communications...enough to cover the cost of our equipment, of course!

eHam Forums / Elmers / Two Element Vertical Phased Array Spacing...
|
on: September 04, 2009, 10:16:49 AM

Hello,
Making multi-band, two-element vertical phased array, even with dissimilar antennas is extremely easy. So easy, that I am wondering why more haven't done this:
1. Get two verticals (doesn't matter if they are the same or not). Merely elevate them a few feet with two opposite direction elevated ground wires 33' or greater (length not critical, and four is a waste).
2. Space them, say 33' apart.
3. Feed them with ladder line.
4. Use a DPDT relay, switching between 0 degree phasing (verticals connected to each other, and grounds connected), and 180 degree phasing (vertical on one connected to ground on the other)
5. Done!
A switchable-direction vertical phased array is that easy. You don't need expensive switch boxes, or cables lying (phasing lines)all over the place.
Lest you think I am fantasizing. I had done much empirical testing with single verticals, ground mounted (several ground wires to 130), and elevated verticals (2 to 4 ground wires, at varying lengths). Both as single verticals and as phased verticals. What I mention above absolutely works! The phasing has noticeable gain (rx and tx) over a single element, and you get sizable attenuation from non-lobe areas.
What I was forgetting now was the spacing for optimal 20-30-40M broadside gain, as I don't care about switching it, as long as I can get general broadside firing.
Regards,
Marc
