Guy's, I have a older 745 great performer and solid rig, excell comdition. I need some of the typical repairs. I have the new memory card and need to send t away for other tweaking.
Anyone have any working history with MTS out of toledo WA? I have purchased his board and thinking of sending it off to him for my repairs. Should I sink another 135.00 with shipping in this rig or sell and move on? Please keep in mind I am working on a tight budget.. Thank you any insight .. 73's Rick
MTS is the best for Icoms. His rep is impeccable.

Why not a TS 590. it is a good upgrade over 570 (which I have owned for 14 years) You would be familiar with basic layout and operation and could quickly adapt to added features. Kenwood has its own sound of sorts and receiver audio (which has always been good) and changing brands will change sound some.
I would go with a TS-590 over Icom an day of the week. Icoms are horribly overpriced and overrated. Their receivers are not that good based on price. The best receiver they make is the $11,000 IC-7800, which is not as good as TS-590 receiver and barely better than the Yaesu FT-950 which is no long available. Their 7410 dsiplay design dates back to the 1997. http://www.sherweng.com/table.htmlReally, the FT-950 is no longer available. You might want to check that again. Maybe you were thinking of the FT-2000??? Have a look at Yaesu's site. Seem of the radios listed there are discontinued, and some of their radios that have come out in the past year are not even listed yet. Apparently they do not take their own web site very seriously. Very true

I posted this in the DX forum as well. I'm going to Cuba in a few weeks with an art group and am intending to bring an Elecraft KX1 to operate while there. Is anyone aware of any restrictions I would have to deal with?
Your biggest problem is that it is not rare. No one is going to be jumping thru hoops to contact you. If that is OK with you, then just enjoy the trip and and the DXing.

I worked on the re-wiring of the power supply can cap. Two sections had been replaced with modern electrolytics under the chassis, a 20uf and a 33uf but I couldn't find the other 20uf section. After staring at the mess of wires under the old can cap, I discovered they had left one section connected, however, it was bad. I paralleled a 20uf over it, brought up the variac to about 30volts and the dial lamps started to glow That's good enough for now. Next step checking for out of spec resistors and leaky caps. There's a bunch of black beauties in there, they get replaced anyway. 20uf is not common today. 22uf is very common and cheap as a replacement. 33uf is still common.

I have only seen dogbones once, and AC5UP had to tell me what they hell they were. If I recall, they are not like carbon comps. If they are high power, replace them with metal oxide. I seem to recall them being wirewound, but cannot recall.
If you are not sure of the value, join Antiques Radio forum, and someone there would know.

For Icoms, I would use Scott at MTS. For Kenwood, I would use Kenwood Clif.
Who is Kenwood Cliff? First class: http://www.avvid.com/Thanks! I like him already - his work bench looks almost as cluttered as my reloading bench! I'd really like to find someone local, but if it has to shipped, this looks like the guy. The nice thing about Clif is he posts on this forum, and routinely assists people to fix their rigs on their own. Many techs will not do that because it is taking money out of their pocket.

Thanks to all who replied to my original post. I sent the radio back to HRO and they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it and sent it right back to me. It works perfectly for 5-10 minutes then it stops transmitting, no power reading on my power meter. Seems to shutdown sooner if i run it on high power. SWR is nearly a 1:1 match, no more then 1.2:1. I'm wondering if HRO really did check it out or just plugged it up and ran it for a few minutes and sent it back . Has anyone had any luck dealing with Yaesu service department? When I send it back to HRO its on my dime (and not cheap), does Yaesu cover postage for warranty repairs? This is definitely my first and last HRO purchase and possibly my last Yaesu purchase if this doesn't get resolved... I can guarantee you they tried it and tested it. It is a company policy to do that.

Never any complaints about my K3 on SSB transmit. To the OP: Only you can decide what you want in a new radio. If you are looking for a drop-in replacement of the TS-570, I'd also advocate the TS-590S, K3, and the TT Eagle be considered.
I'm sick and tired of people pointing to the "Sherwood numbers" blindly. This is one set of tests that measures very specific things that, although they are indicative of the performance of the radios under a variety of conditions, they also might not matter a bit to the average ham. Sherwood himself also admits in a separate document that differences of as much as a couple of dB are probably statistically insignificant. For most hams, the radios in the top half of the Sherwood list have perfectly acceptable receivers. If you have big antennas, wish to operate during contests, or work DX on the low bands, then you need to start thinking about the upper quartile or decile. Otherwise, having a clean transmitter and good reliability/spare parts are more important than having the top receiver.
He does instrument testing where most people use their ears. I would rather trust his instruments than other people's ears. While I agree with you that a couple dB may not be discernible, I would like to know that my FT-950 may have as good a receiver as the IC-7800 by the standards he is using. The difference is if I am willing to pay the price of an extra $10,000 for an IC-7800 for bells and whistles. Also, while the TS-590 uses down conversion on 20M, it was not until I saw his site that the 590 uses up conversion on the WARC bands, that reduces receiver performance significantly. I never knew that about the 590, until I saw his site. He also does have one major factor in his favor. He does the same tests and uses the same standards. And that is as good as it gets. This site is a tool. As very useful tool. Is it gospel? No. But it's a damn good tool.

Of course, I can take close-up photos and draw diagrams. I may yet have to do this. The radio does not have any reception on the highest band. The others seem to be working ok.
That is what I do. Take pics and make diagrams. Many time, you do not have to complete disassemble the parts. I only disassembled enough to get in place with a needle nose and a soldering iron. In cases like this, I cut the leads to the resistors, and solder the new resistors to the existing leads.

Go to mods/repair forum. Someone was just having a similar problem and the power switch wore out. You may have the same problem.
