1  eHam Forums / Station Building / RE: Photos of Station Cable Entrance strategies on: May 30, 2013, 05:13:50 AM
When I built the shack I framed a place to mount an 1/4" aluminum panel.  I drilled holes for feed throughs for coax as needed.  I also bring in control / rotator cables and then put connectors on the cables inside the building.  This way I can disconnect everything at the panel.

I do not have too many good photos.  Here are a few:

This is what I am in the midst of doing.  Thanks.

Folks, I would like to request photos (or links to photos) or websites of various ways to get your cables into the building/shack.  I've moved to a new qth and am figuring this part of my station out.  Especially helpful would be situations where a metal plate to mount polyphasor units/grounding units was used.
Thanks in advance for helping me stimulate the idea factory.

It's a 2005 Ford Focus.  I have a longish commute and got tired of feeding the truck...it's a gas-sipping commuter car.

Re: ground connections.  Is there a list of them somewhere?  I own the Chilton's book for my car.

  Thanks, Mike

Does the auto parts store have the ability to determine if one of the output diodes has gone bad without the whole thing failing?  If I can get a o-scope on it what do I look for?...Alternating current where there should be none?

Thanks for everyone's replies.  I appreciate them.

I also forgot to mention that I noticed the flourescent display of the clock/radio randomly fluctuating in brightness (very slight difference).  I could not say for certain whether this was new behavior or if I was merely extra vigilant and looking for things.
Thanks for the info.  The vehicle is older, I may change the alternator and see.

Hello all.  I have an FT-7800 dual band Yaesu in my Ford Focus.  Unit is under passenger seat, head mounted to dash. Antenna NMO mount in middle of trunk lid.  Has been very satisfactory for a few years now.
This Friday just past, I noticed a whine in my received audio on both 2m and UHF.  It's frequency veried with engine RPMs.  This has appeared totally out of the blue.  I was able to determine that it is also going out on my transmitted audio.
So what do I look into? I already made sure that everything is hooked together tightly and my ground is good, etc.  Is this a sign my alternator is going bad?  What are my steps to determine and mitigate this?

  Thanks.

  Yes, I'm aware it's legal...just unconventional.  Thanks.
10  eHam Forums / Misc / USB on 7.230 40 meters? on: March 06, 2012, 06:53:58 PM
Am I missing something?  For 2 nights in a row now I have heard a group at 7.230 USB (rather than LSB) .... what's up with that?  I've been away from ham radio a wee bit and just got some wire back up and listening around....it took me aminute to figure out why I could't zero beat with them...it worked once I flipped from LSB to USB.  Thanks & 73.

Whoops, I forgot about it being able to be locked.  Glad you got it.

Just drag it down...you can drag it around to any side.  As far as the width, you can go to the edge and get a double-headed arrow, then move it to resize it.  Hope this helps.

If I recall correctly, a number of years ago, several cycling teams were discovered to be using 2M and 440 Alinco low power (the really thin rigs) handhelds on amateur frequencies.

I remember that as well.  These were definitely Yaesus.  I wish the same photo was on the website but I can't find it anywhere online.

That's about what I thought.  I was also wondering if the picture in the TOC was some "stock" photo and not an actual from the pleoton poto but the other photos in the article appeared to be actual team riders with what appeared to be the same radios carried in a pouch on the back of the mesh portion of their bibs.
Isn't there a dry lake bed in Nevada?  That make it "marine" use, doesn't it?  Undecided

Being a big fan of cycling, I've seen them transition from no radios to using two-way radios between the racers and the team directors in the team cars.  I just started to read an article in the June 2010 edition of VeloNews about the debate pro and con radios in pro cycling.  Interestingly, in the table of contents at the front of the magazine next to the entry for the article, there is a picture of an open padded case.  Laying there are three HTs...that are clearly Yaesu VX-3s.  Can anybody explain how that works?  In France?

Thanks de Mike KB9WQJ
