I have something new my Kenwood G71A is doing. It only does this when connected to the attached battery, not when using an external supply. When the radio is on, pressing on any of the keys on the front, especially the blue function key, causes the radio to shut off...display goes blank etc. You cannot turn it back on when it is in this state. You must remove the battery and re-attach it, which SOMETIMES restores it and sometimes does not. At present, I cannot get the radio to come back on. I checked and it does it with all three of my batteries. All three batteries are supplying the correct voltage. The battery contacts both on the radio and the battery case appear to be OK. Anything else I should check before sending the radio back to Kenwood. I have emailed Kenwood from their web page but so far, no reply. Thanks in advance and 73 to all.

Well, my rig's on a wooden hump mount thingie I built. I have a '92 Explorer by the way. Antenna, I used a lip mount on the back door...works great and if you place it carefully, you can open the back door and the antenna goes alongside the vehicle.

eHam Forums / Antenna Restrictions / Get rid of Birds ?

I had a problem with birds getting in the back of my gas grill and making a nest on the grate every spring. Whenever I wanted to grill something, I had to clean the debris out of the grill and I couldn't do it too early because they would fill it back up within an hour. A rubber snake laid across the shelf on the side cured the problem 100% the first day it was there. We also have a fake owl down at the boat dock at the lake and it keeps birds from nesting on the dock. Hope this info is helpful.

How do you get it to transmit on one band and receive on another? My G71 will not do this. Are you manually switching between two different memories or something when you switch from listen to talk? Thanks.

I have been very happy with my G71 Kenwood. I used to use it as a mobile on the way to work and there is one spot on the drive that is intermod hell and it did very well. It is a nice little rugged radio. I would be happier with a BNC instead of SMA but that is a small quibble. I'm happy with mine.

eHam Forums / Elmers / Connecting directly to battery

Thanks, guys. I am grateful for the suggestions. That is pretty much what I had thought, but wanted some confirmation as this will be my first install of anything connected directly to the battery. I had always used cig lighter plugs before but knew that wasn't appropriate in this case.

One always reads that you are supposed to connect directly to the battery when installing a mobile radio. As a neophyte, I am not sure what connectors to use or exactly how one connects directly to the battery terminals. Any insight or pointers to web-based resourse would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Mike
