I'll go out on a limb to say that I don't think the leaderboard hurts anyone's chance of working an ATNO. If ANYTHING it helps motivate the smaller stations to improve their station and skills.
Jonathan, I don't get how a leaderboard on Club Log motivates anyone. I am motivated by my DX'ing goals, i.e., desires to improve my totals in the DXCC listings, as well as the performance of my station as I join in the pileups. But leaderboards?
I guess an analogy might be looking in a mirror. I use the mirror to comb my hair, but I only do so because I want to look good for my wife. Looking in the mirror is not an end in itself.
I read though most of DX world comments and also here. I think I understand how the little gun feels. After all I was one for many years.
With that said :: as far as DXing go's I had DXCC -CW No# 777 in 1979 . No computers guys and gals. My Goal :: Work and confirm all current entities CW. I now have 327 current and 10 deleted entities CW.
My view of all these awards does not matter. I just simply am only interested in 3 - DXCC-CW - 160 DXCC - 160 WAZ -
When I started to chase the Leader boards for those couple years it was for one reason To Place 1st either in zone 5 or world wide. I have NO interest in WAS / SSB / RTTY / PSK awards nor 5 band 8 band 9 band dxcc nor DX challenge. None of them, My motivation was being first on the leader boards and if any of you have any idea the TIME I spent on T32C you might understand the goal - the challenge - thrill - It is a record of band slots I NEVER want to break nor will I .
The Challenge was to work and Log T32C on all band slots . 34 band slots was a achievement I will NEVER forget. I am proud of that achievement with 100 watts. GJ6UW and 2nd in the world with 100 watts. And many other high positions on other dx expeditions.
AS far as dups go , I maintain a standard I have for years. In the pass 8 years I may have duped 6 times in 1000's of dx contacts. Other words , I dislike making dup contacts and am PROUD that I do NOT make them as a rule. I can even remember the few I have made and why. And it had nothing to do with leader boards.
If there is a first position and a leader board then the DX expedition has DECLARED it a ENDURANCE DX CONTEST As I see it . I do not care how any one looks at this. This is how I view it and others I have spoke to . IF there is a 1st position and 2nd through 100 and 1st -100 in all 40 zones what do YOU call it if it is NOT a contest of sorts ?
I am QRT leader boards after GJ6UW or as of end of 2011 . I NO LONGER chase leader boards nor band slots , but I will be the first one to congratulate those leaders of any leader boards now or future.
The bottom line is if leader boards are causing this much problem Then they should be SHUT DOWN> But as many have stated there is a bigger problem going on in ham radio than leader boards.
One last thing - Just like leader boards If None of you have not been in the top 10 of one them You can not understand the thrill.
How could you possibly understand the thrill of clocking a first place combine winner / first club racing pigeon that flew 500 miles in 9 hours 29 min and 29 seconds unless YOU HAVE DONE IT? Other words what I am saying is this means Nothing to no one on this board. But I understand when others win with racing pigeons what it means.
So with that Chuck Now you know what motivated me on leader boards chase for what it is worth .
And it had Nothing , zero to do with testing my skills nor my antenna nor my radio nor to worked all bands all modes for awards. After all I already know my skills , my antennas , and what my radio can do. This was All in place when I chased the Leader boards.
Good Luck Good DXing And may the DX Propagation Wind be in your favor .
