1  eHam Forums / Computers And Software / RE: Windows XP - the end approaches...... on: Today at 12:33:22 AM

Tell that to NASA.  Laptops on the International Space Station are going to be fitted with Debian 6.  Windows is done on the ISS.

Can you provide a link for this please?

Here's one from TechnoBuffalo, dated May 10.  There are others - just do a search in Google's news section.
Thank you sir, found it!

Linux accounts for less than 5% of desktop users.  It is irrelevant and down in the noise.  I have apps from the Win95 days that still runs on Windows 8.   Too many applications for Linux are half finished, and very buggy.  I have seen more app crashes on Linux than on Windows since Windows 95/98/ME.
You should let NASA know!!!
3  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Christman Feed Question? on: Today at 12:17:49 AM
Dow-Key relays are intended for short/brief closure only.   If you use them in continuous closure use the coil will burn up.  I've seen lamentations from hams who tried to use them as antenna selector switches inside the shack.

I had no idea about that...  THANK YOU for the info!!!

Tnx Dave but to the poster of the question, you need a DTDP relay, $8 at rat shack.
Bob
Hi Bob, I was the poster...  Why DPDT?  I was going to use a common ground... What am I missing.

Look at JTE's nethod. He uses Rat shack relays no prb.  I talk to him all the time and they work quite well.

6  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / Christman Feed Question? on: Yesterday at 08:45:45 AM
Hi,

I am constructing a 40 Meter phased vertical array...  Anyone know where I could get a relay for this, (SPDT), in the 1.5 KW lever...  I have a DOW that looks to be up to the job...  Any thought on that?  If the DOW is used, I'd get a T on the output of each end, for the 71 degree phasing line.
7  eHam Forums / Digital / RE: What is this... on: Yesterday at 08:42:55 AM
What is making that noise on 14.235.00? (+/-)
I sounds like a cross between digital-sstv & regular sstv but it seems to be a "never ending" stream.
Neither mentioned programs will decode it.

I recently heard it May 23, 2013 @ 0154Z
There is some sort of repeating saw type buzz going on on 14.230 as well...  It is 10 KHz wide as well...

9  eHam Forums / Antennas and Towers and more / RE: Dipole Fed with Coax. Should feed point be covered or left to the elements. on: May 19, 2013, 08:50:51 AM
You need to keep water out of your coax cable, otherwise the strands of
copper will corrode and the losses will increase.  The feedpoint itself doesn't
matter, but the coax part needs to be properly sealed.

You'll find a lot of suggestions and discussion here on eHam about how best
to do that.  I uses the stretchable rubber/silicon tape and/or "Liquid Electrical
Tape" depending on the shape I need to seal.

I am going to be faced with this with a vertical array shortly, how are are you keeping water from wicking up the bared?
10  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: Lower Your Power and Improve Your Pileup Skill on: May 16, 2013, 09:51:30 AM
Different DX-ers have different pileup "styles":

3)  Cheesy "Brain Surgeon" - drops his call once and beats everyone else. Every time. [This is my hero - one I'm trying to emulate these days]. It takes a lot of practice
though! Doesn't matter what his power is - but usually does have a decent antenna. So good - seems "sneaky".

Could you expand on EXACTLY what method is being used here?  I would love to try it.
11  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: ARRL LoTW URL changes on: May 15, 2013, 04:23:24 PM
Since most of the LoTW staff are at Dayton, we're probably have to wait until the first part of next week to get some kind of resolution/explanation.

What kind of idjit makes a change like this right before going out of town for the better part of a week? That's poor planning in spades!
You know...  You are a mind reader...  I was thinking exactly the same thing...  When I was working in IT, we had a rule...  No major changes on Friday...
12  eHam Forums / DXing / RE: DARC Worked All Europe award? on: May 15, 2013, 09:54:01 AM
I like wallpaper, but finding the cards to verify
would be very difficult. They are everywhere.

I have all but 4U1V, Bear Is, and of course...Monk Apollo.
They take eQSL, and I believe LoTW...  I sent no cards!  Smiley
13  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: HT That recieves SSB & CW on: May 15, 2013, 09:53:20 AM
From this discussion I'm kinda wishing I had bought the TH-F6 with SSB and CW receive ability instead of the VX3R. The Kenwood puts out 5 watts vs about 1.5 watts for the Yaesu. Either radio will fit in a shirt pocket.

The Kenwood's been on the market since 2001 so it's pretty old. It used to sell for almost $500 but they are under $300 nowadays. (Chinese competition?). The VX3R is about $185. The Kenwood also transmits on 222.

Of course all those amazing features carry a significant programming burden. Programming software is almost mandatory.
You can find them on the used market for 200 to 250 depending on condition and accessories included...

Any one here got this award hanging in the shack? I counted up my WAE totals today and am just about ready to submit.

I just got it a few weeks ago...  Turn time was about 4 weeks from submission.  Arrived in a very stiff envelope, so the postal system did manage to destroy it..
15  eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / RE: HT That recieves SSB & CW on: May 14, 2013, 04:16:40 PM
I have a Yaesu VX-5R which I love.  It's a fine radio but a couple of things bug me about it.

1.  No SSB & CW reception.

2.  No reception 16-48 MHz

Any reccomendations for a compact hand held handitalkie that has SSB & CW reception?

Thanks!

Kenwood TH-F6a, see my review at:
http://nk7z.net/review-of-kenwoods-th-f6-handheld-radio/

Thanks WIll take a look at it.

It is a cute rig.  I use it to help locate RFI as well as two meters.
