Thanks all for the fine suggestions; however the other guy backed out of the deal. A wire transfer is a great idea if you know the other party involved in the transaction, but if it is a stranger I'd be pretty leery about giving out my bank details. Paypal charges fees but in the long run I think it's a safer bet since both parties' bank information stays private.

I have a fellow in Australia who wants to buy a rig I have for sale. Short of using Paypal (which can get expensive with their fees), what is the best way for this ham to get the funds to me? Do other countries have International money orders? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

You can pick up an external speaker at RadioShack or, if you're near any truck stop, they have external speakers for $10 or under that will work just fine.

eHam Forums / Mods And Repairs / Yaesu FT-1000MP PTT problem
|
on: September 30, 2006, 09:19:49 PM

I recently bought a Yaesu FT-1000MP which seems to work well, except it will not transmit using the mic PTT. I have tried two mics on it. It will transmit using the MOX button on the front panel. Has anyone else encountered this problem and have a fix for it before I send it to the black hole known as "the repair shop"? Thanks.

I recently obtained a used Hustler 5BTV which is missing the "spider tubes" for the capacitance hat. The manual does not show the length of these elements. Does anyone know the proper length so that I can cut some new ones? Thanks!

eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / A no-groundplane dual band antenna, does it exist?
|
on: December 28, 2004, 07:32:01 PM
|
|
Hello again, all! OK, the Mustang saga continues...I am trying to mount a dual band antenna on a 2003 Ford Mustang. The body is fiberglass so a "standard" mount is out and a glass-mount antenna does not work properly (SWR 1.9:1 and higher, especially at high power; probably passivated glass.) Does anyone know of a dual band (2m/440) antenna that does not require a groundplane...perhaps one designed for use on a motorcycle? Oh, yes, it needs to be aesthetically pleasing (wife's car.) Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

If it is a VHF/UHF antenna (I'm guessing since you did not specify) some manufacturers, such as Comet, make antennas with a built-in "foldover" feature. If you're not absolutely in love with the antenna you have now you may want to consider one of these.

eHam Forums / Mobile Ham / Using the AM/FM antenna for 2 meters
|
on: December 20, 2004, 09:03:12 AM
|
|
Hi, all, and thank you for the replies I have received to this post. I did find a "replacement" type disguise antenna that would probably fill the bill; however, after much searching (internet and soul) I believe that my wife's car will end up with a (still rather inefficient) glass-mount antenna (if I even thought of getting near her new Mustang with a drill she'd drill me!.) Oh, yes, I also have to install an XM radio...at least those antennas are fairly tiny nowadays!!
Again, thanks for all the suggestions.

Years ago I recall seeing a splitter/tuner that allowed you to use your car's AM/FM broadcast antenna for both the stereo and your 2-meter rig. I believe it was rated at about 10 or 20 watts. Does anyone recall these, who made them and where I might find one? (Yes, I know they are grossly inefficient, but...my wife recently bought a new car; she wants a 2-mtr rig in it but would rather not have another antenna on it.) Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I, too, am using a "used" 941-D that was purchased at a hamfest. I found the built-in SWR/Power meter was dead, so I simply put an external meter in line between the transmitter and the tuner. It may be that your built-in SWR meter is flaky; see what an external meter tells you. (Remember, MFJ = Mighty Fine Junk!)

Yes, Wayne is still publishing 73, but it's available only as a subscription now. The phone number is (603) 924-0058. It's around $25 a year. And yes, it still has articles about Art Bell, NASA coverups, and little electronic blood stimulators, but reading 73 is sort of like reading a "Mad Magazine" for hams! (Doesn't Wayne look kinda like a fat, balding Alfred E. Newman?)

I worked a 3V8 station on 17 meters on March 29, at about 2230Z. The band was fading and I did not get his complete callsign. I thought it was 3V8DJ, but that call comes back to a 1999 DXpedition. Does anyone know who that station I worked might have been? Thanks!
