I was wondering if I could use a satellite as a repeater? All I have is a Yaesu VX-6R handheld. Can someone explain in lay terms how to do this?
Thanks very much!

eHam Forums / Elmers / Interference from my GPS

Thanks for the reply. I don;t think mine is caused by the same problem as yours since I do not use a cigarette lighter plug on either my radio or the GPS. I found it strange that it only happens on that one frequency... I have noticedf this now with 2 GPS units and 2 radios...

Everytime my radio is tuned to the local repeater, 147.315, and I have my GPS turned on, there is a great deal of intereference on the radio. Is there a way to stop this?

eHam Forums / Elmers / What does DB mean?

I see the term DB in many places and am unsure how it relates to radios. I know one meaning of DB is sound level, but it seems to relate to power levels as well. Can someone explain the term DB to me?
thanks!

eHam Forums / Elmers / Stubby Antennas??

I am looking for a new antenna for my VX-6R and stumbled across the Comet CH-32 (Miracle Baby) and wonder if anyone has any experience with these types of antennas? Can I safely assume they would not get the range of a rubber ducky?

eHam Forums / Elmers / What is TX & RX?

I have been into Amateur Radio for a year now. There is no club in my area and I haven't even met anyone willing to help me out. I already knew what RX and TX meant, but I gurantee there are a billion other terms I would never know. Do not assume that because it's a simple term that everyone knows what it means.

I would love to start my own NET. Make it a weekly thing about Geocaching. I live in New Brunswick, Canada. Can someone explain to me what steps are involved in setting this up?
Thanks very much!

eHam Forums / Satellites / Some VERY basic questions

A couple of VERY basic questions for you guys.
1. I guess the first question is: Can I use a satellite with just a small 2 band HT using a better antenna?
2. Can you use one satellite all day or do you have to keep switching between them?
thanks!

TKS for the answers guys! Another one for you:
How far can I actually reach with the VX-150? I know in a straight line, using no repeater it would be a few KM, using a erpeater would be more than that, but could I call long distance, say several hundred KM, by linking repeaters or something?

I passed my Basic test last week and can't wait to get both my license and my VX-150. Problem is that there are very few resources I am able to find to help me with figuring all this stuff out. A club is listed in my area, but this club has not existed for several years. I'm looking for a website to help with some of the more basic terms, such as elmer, HT, packet, how to use a repeater etc. Can someone suggest a site like this?
Thanks very much!
